90 pts. Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate: June, 2009
This is as good a deal as you are going to get from Priorat. The deep purple-colored 2007 La Cartuja is 50% Garnacha, 30% Carinena and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It offers up an enticing nose of roasted minerals, lavender, incense, black cherry, and blueberry. On the palate it has good grip, savory flavors, and a lengthy finish. The wine could use a bit more depth but at this price who is complaining?

Bright ruby-red. High-pitched, mineral-driven aromas of red berries, cherry and fresh flowers. Offers noteworthy purity, with gently sweet raspberry and candied rose flavors perked up by a refreshing jolt of tangy minerals. Leaves a nervy mineral quality behind, along with a touch of anise.

Sitting on the deck with a friend in the cool of the evening, the bottle is opened.
Legs of glycerin cascade down the glass into an opulent pool of blueberry essence.
Swirling notes of lavender dance in the rain.
A harmonic balance. Nature’s perfection.
Grilled lamb comes to mind. Moon lights the sky; that which is lost is found from within.
Let your spirit fly… a fine wine will take you there.

The Priorat region’s production of wines is limited, due to the steep slopes and rocky soil. These old vines struggle for water and yield small amounts of fruit. The conditions contribute to the dense concentration, deep color and dark fruit. This is an exquisite bottle of wine at a real bargain price! A very tasty blend; the talent of the winemaker shows through with a nicely balanced and structured wine. Enjoy this with braised short ribs or a hearty lamb stew.
