Pretty aromas of raspberry sorbet, vanilla, dough and roasted hazelnuts. The raspberry flavors are delicate and the wine has a lightness and elegance that are first class. Mostly Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier with traces of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc.

Aromatically complex, with rich, complex flavors to match. Layers of ripe, creamy, elegant black cherry, vanilla, toast and hazelnut combine for a wonderful glass of bubbly. Drink now through 2006.

Brilliant pale golden color. Medium-bodied. Moderately extracted. Elegant smoky nose has baked apple notes that follow throught on the generous palate with fine frothy carbonation. Very accessible, with a hint of sweetness evident.

A classic blend of Pinot Noir, with Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, this is really a terrific sparkler. It’s soft and round and elegant, a true bubbly rosé that offers rich strawberry, peaches and cream and vanilla flavors that are subtle and complex.

While this bubbly is technically dry, it tastes sweetly infused with the essence of strawberries and vanilla. The mouthfeel is fine, with a gentle scouring of acidity and the slight sourness from its lees. Drink it now with almost anything, especially sushi.

Pale in color, flavorful, delicate, boasting a sense of elegance and finesse, marked by subtle cherry, earth and hazelnut notes and a complex aftertaste.

A lively quaff, this is soft and loaded with fresh strawberry and creamy, spicy vanilla notes. Drink now.

Not a bad price for a full-bodied sparkler of this quality. It’s fully dry and balanced, with a bubbly mouthfeel, rich in young acids, that carries cherries and blackberries. Just a bit rough on the finish, but a lovely sipper.

Domaine Chandon, part of Moët & Chandon, has been around since 1973; it was Napa Valley’s (and the U.S.’s) first French-owned sparkling wine house. For several years now, Chandon has been sourcing its grapes for the blanc de noirs — mainly Pinot Noir, with a bit of Pinot Meunier — from the cool Carneros region. Salmon-pink in color, this sparkler is medium-bodied, with subtle strawberry aromas and flavors.

Creamy vanilla and raspberry aromas lead to appealing flavors of strawberry and spicy lemon in this fun glass of bubbles. Drink now.

This Blanc de Noirs — 91% Pinot Noir with small amounts of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier — opens with a tad ripe, with a light and airy mousse and a predominance of strawberry flavor. It’s easy to like — dry, soft and round with a long finish.

A festive bubbly that’s crisp yet has ripe, succulent cherry, vanilla and spice aromas and racy apple, raspberry and toasty caramel flavors. Drink now.

A good sparkling wine for the price. Medium-bodied, it has pretty flavors of strawberries and limes. The bubbles are a little fierce in texture.

Full-bodied and dry. You can taste the Pinot Noir in the black and red cherry and red currant flavors. A bit rough in texture, but pretty good for the price. Will pair well with roast salmon or even a lamb chop.

Tart and flinty citrus and sour cherry flavors are complex and vibrant, finishing with a crisp, lively and cleansing aftertaste. Drink now.

Full-bodied, rich and complex, with layers of raspberry and cherry fruit, finishing with notes of spice, yeast and toast that turn delicate. Drink now through 2008.

Pale golden hue. Very fruit forward aromas of nectarine carry a hint of smoke. Follows through well on a medium-bodied palate with a quick, fruity finish. A fruit-centered style.

Pale copper color, this bubbly has appealing apple and dried cherry aromas and flavors. It shows balance and good complexity and a lively acidity that lifts the finish. Drink now.

Opens a faint pinkish hue and apple-herb aromas one taster found reminiscent of shampoo. There’s a cherry edge to the flavors and the wine is only mildly effervescent. It fills out on the close, with a slight nuttiness. The three-digit code, on this and other Chandon wines, refers to the date of disgorgement.

Offers perfumed watermelon, ginger and anise aromas and straightforward strawberry, red apple and spicy yeast flavors. Drink now.

84 pts. : December 1, 2003

Simple, warm and toasty, this frothy sparkler has a clean citrus fruit flavor set into scents of baked bread. The orange zest in the finish will play against any fried foods.

: December 1, 1996

Close to the Chandon norm, but not so deep in fruit or creamy richness as the best of the winery’s efforts, this big bottle shows its yeastiness in toasty, quietly burnt paper notes and carries more evident fruit than the accompanying wine in 750 ml size. More than adequately bubbled and firm in structure, the wine is a bit stiffer and toastier than is typical of the genre, but it has the depth and energy to be a much enjoyed potion at holiday celebrations.

…has a perfume of raspberry, strawberry and papaya. The flavors of berries, citrus, tropical fruit and peach are crisp and flavorful, with a medium-long finish.

: December 1, 1995

Still our favorite among Chandon’s magnum bottlings, this year’s Blanc de Noirs comes with a quiet streak of cherryish fruit set in support of broad, insistently creamy yeastiness. Nicely composed in the nose and wonderfully rounded in texture is often the case with wines fermented in magnum, it shows the kind of autolyzed complexity that extra time can bring.

: December 1, 1997

The clean and correct aromas offer autolyzed yeast tones along with citrus and cherry fruit nuances. Well-composed but never especially rich or complex, the wined carries a pinpoint mousse that leads to a broad, sweet, fruity wine in mid-palate and an aged-on-the-yeast lingering aftertaste.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Blanc de Noir (literally, “white from black”) sparkling wines, and the Chandon is a favorite for value. Produced from the noble black grapes of Champagne, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, this California bubbly is bursting with ripe strawberry, pomegranate and white plum notes, overlaid with lovely floral violet aromas. The tangy fruit flavors are lively on the tongue, and the mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing. Although terrific on its own (for sipping or celebrations), I love to serve this with salmon, canapés or omelets.

A blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes from the prime Carneros region, this pale blush sparkling wine is an excellent choice to accompany seafood, spicy cuisines and desserts.
