Xinomavro is one of my favorite little-known grape varieties. The best Xinomavro can be Barolo-like in their imposing structure and almost paradoxical elegance. And if I were to taste the Domaine Karydas blind, I’d be thinking Barolo all day long: aromas of tar, roses and Earl Grey tea. These classic Nebbiolo tones are offset by beautiful ripe strawberry and a pastis-like fennel and thyme herbal quality. There’s mouth-gripping structure here, but the tannins never seem harsh or out of balance. Enjoy with a nice filet.
