Lively and fun to drink, with creamy Asian pear and citrus aromas that lead to crisp, easygoing apple, yeasty cinnamon and mineral flavors. Drink now through 2012.

:

A wonderfully drinkable sparkling wine that appeals immediately for its balanced texture and rich flavors. Easy to like for its array of raspberries, limes, vanilla, toast and yeast. The sour lees note is nicely balanced with the sweet liqueur of dosage.

Gloria Ferrer’s affordable sparking wines make a case for enjoying bubbly more often. This cuvée, made by Bob Iantosca, head winemaker since 1986, is based on Pinot Noir. His blending skill has resulted in a consistent house style from year to year. The final blend is a mix of 20 different base wines, a strategy designed to build complexity in aroma, texture and flavor.

Spaniard José Ferrer founded Gloria Ferrer in 1986, and the pioneering vintner built one of the first sparkling wine facilities in Carneros. This non-vintage cuvée is made from a blend of predominantly Pinot Noir along with Chardonnay, and it spends at least 18 months on its yeast prior to disgorgement.

An exceptional value. Round and full-bodied, with rich, ripe apple, pear and honeydew melon flavors. This complex sparkler has a nice touch of yeast and doughy aromas that give it added flavor, turning creamy with a touch of vanilla. Drink now through 2009.

A delicious mouthful of bubbly. Smooth, rich and creamy, showing layers of black cherry, vanilla and ginger, with a hint of lemon drop. Finishes with a long, refreshing aftertaste of mineral and fruit. Drink now.

Smooth and creamy; flavors of currant and vanilla lead to a refreshing finish.

Bright straw with golden cast. Medium-bodied. Moderately extracted. Lemon, lime, smoky yeasts. Well judged toasty nuanceds on the aromas. Brash and fruity with juicy acids persisting through the finish. Lively fine-beaded carbonation.

This wine is finely integrated and creamy in texture, more about richness than freshness. It finishes tight and leesy. Serve with prawns in cream sauce.

A good, dry and elegant bubbly. Shows crisp flavors of yeasty bread dough, limes, tangerines, raspberries and vanilla. This is a great price for a sparkling wine of this finesse.

Very pale straw color with lots of fine, small bubbles. Nutty, smoky apricot and lemon-lime aromas, freshly baked bread, and a whiff of vanilla. Light-bodied, dry, fine and elegant. You can taste the dosage in the finish. the blend is 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay.

Medium-light yellow with persistent mousse of tiny pin-point bubbles; attractive, clean, delicate, elegant, floral, pear and citrus aromas; medium-full body; slightly toasty and creamy, citrus and green apple flavors with persistent effervescence; lingering aftertaste.

This bubbly bursts with fresh apple and citrus fruit and lively spicy lemon, tart pear and anise flavors that finish with a clean note. Drink now.

Scents of hazelnuts introduce this simple, grapey sparkler. It’s buttery and leesy, a richly textured wine for roast chicken with lemon and ginger.

Mostly Pinot Noir, with some Chardonnay, this rich, crisp bubbly has forward flavors of strawberries, raspberries, tangerines, vanilla and yeasty smoke. It’s quite dry and at its best now.

Incredibly frothy, persistent mousse. Fresh, delicate, lemon-citrusy character with herbal tones. Nicely balanced on the tart, food- oriented side. Creamy texture.

Fresh, crisp, and fruit-forward, with green apple and pear aromas and lively lemon and mineral flavors. Drink now through 2012.

A fine California bubbly, a little scoury in the mouth and sweet in the finish. But the orange, strawberry and lime flavors are good, and the wine satisfies for basic sparkling character.

87
87 pts. : December 15, 2003

Yeasty, doughy aromas lead to ripe creamy pear, vanilla and fig flavors, picking up a rich earth- and vanilla-scented core of flavors. Drink now through 2008.

One of the drier California bubblies on the market. The pretty vanilla, smoke, raspberry and lime aromas and flavors are set in a very dry package, with good acidity and a lively feeling in the mouth. Finishes a bit hot and peppery.

Pale yellow hue. Apple and lemon aromas with a yeasty accent precede a vibrant, medium-bodied palate with a brightly-fruited finish. There seems to be a lot of Chardonnay influence.

Full-throttle lime, peach and strawberry aromas come through on the nose, with a trace of toast. It drinks as fruity as it smells. There’s some pretty toast and good acidity, and it finishes fruity and a little sweet.

86 pts. : December 31, 2007

This bubbly is rich in cherry and raspberry fruit, in addition to the usual sparkling wine notes of bread dough and smoke. It’s a little sweet and scoury on the palate, but a fairly polished sparkler for this price.

Tasty bubbly here, a smooth, polished wine with pronounced lime, raspberry and vanilla flavors complexed with yeast and smoke. Dry and vibrant, this is easy to drink.

Yeasty and balanced in a sweetly ripe style, this full-bodied sparkler is suited to Sunday brunch.

85 pts. : December 1, 2005

Vanilla cream and peaches in cream, with lots of pure yeasty dough, mark this bubbly. It has good, crisp acidity and a rough texture that turns a little sweet on the finish.

: December 1, 1996

Fairly quiet in fruit and trimmed with a subtle bit of developed yeastiness, this light, comparatively restrained sparkling wine… will find its best use when served alone.

: December 1, 1995

Showing a richer and weightier style than is the norm among this years’ sparklers, this “winey” effort makes obvious its larger percentage of Pinot Noir. Suggesting roasted grains, cream and a touch of graham cracker in its moderately yeasty aromas, the wine is broad and fruity in flavor with an ample measure of yeast. If a bit too heavy and slightly too coarse to win wholesale endorsement as an aperitif, it is eminently suited to service with poultry or richer foods.

: November 1, 2011

Sonoma’s Gloria Ferrer (which is owned by the Spanish cava megaproducer Freixenet) has been making crisp, focused sparkling wines like this citrusy one since it was founded back in 1986.

: December, 2008

Fruit-forward with aromas and flavors of pear, stone fruit, and strawberry; medium bodied with refreshing acidity and a clean, crisp finish. Oysters Rockefeller.

: January 1, 2009

Classic fruity, yeasty aromas; red-berry notes.

: October 1, 2007

Hints of strawberry and almond on nose. Pretty wine. Delicate berries, complex.

: June 1, 2008

Though the most basic of the Gloria Ferrer Méthode Champenoise sparkling wines, this wine maintains a clear and crisp profile, with freshly-baled hay, nice hints of pear and a bit of the almond from the yeast.
