Pale aquamarine tint comes from the infusion of Iris root and flower. Opening nosing passes feature clove with supporting traces of cassia bark, grains of paradise and nutmeg; after several more minutes a moderately sweet and fruity bouquet develops, one that highlights orange zest, coriander and juniper berries. Palate entry is bittersweet and acceptably prickly on the tongue; by midpalate, the cocoa and bean-like taste focuses on the earthy/root/bark botanicals, especially the cassia, juniper and licorice. Finishes cleanly, bittersweet and long. One of the more bitter and intensely bean-like gins I’ve sampled.

The transparent, attractive, pale aquamarine tint comes from the infusion of iris root and flower and is exceptionally pretty — excellent purity; the opening nosing passes feature the spice elements, mainly clove with supporting traces of cassia bark, grains of paradise and nutmeg — with several more minutes in the glass a moderately sweet and fruity bouquet develops, one that highlights orange zest, coriander and juniper berries — while I acknowledge that the bouquet is relatively complex, its lack of lushness didn’t sweet me off my feet; the palate entry is bittersweet and acceptably prickly on the tongue — by the midpalate stage, the cocoa and bean-like taste focuses on the earthy/root/bark botanicals, especially the cassia, juniper and licorice; it finishes cleanly, bittersweet and long…

The small batch gin is made in Cognac from triple-distilled neutral spirits, spring water and 11 freeze-dried botanicals. During the finish distillation, it’s infused with Iris petals. the result is a captivating, light blue tint. Magellan Gin has a supple body and an engaging bouquet laced with the aromas of citrus and spice.

When it comes to making a good first impression, drop-dead gorgeous Magellan London Dry Gin wins hands down. The superpremium brand from France is triple-distilled in small batches employing 11 botanicals, including cloves and deep-blue Iris petals. Imbued with a lilting bouquet, shimmering light blue tint and crisp, spicy palate, Magellan Gin is a feast for the senses.
