Unexpectedly complex, this first hints at smoke, cocoa and dry spices, and that layering rolls into the taste as well. Forward, ripe apple fruitiness rises above a dry hint of apple skin, wrapping up in a citrus and mineral grip. Stylistically it’s graceful and austere, perfect for simple grilled shellfish of any kind.

The gentle sparkle of this wine carries scents of honeyed apple and red-apple skin. It’s fragrant and clean, and lasts on fruit, a rich style with balance. For crab cakes.

One of the most reliable Cavas at the price, this offers cool, crisp cider apple flavors along with leesy notes of toast, nuts and flowers. It’s gentle and clean, fuel for a dance party.

After a soda-like start that may seem aggressive, this one really settles into a groove. the nose blends citrus and wild green-herb aromas, while the palate has perfectly composed orange and peach flavors. The finish is solid and around every turn it holds the road. Great for the price.

Tightly built around its effervescence, this has a sweet, lemon-scented finish to balance the saline acidity. For roast scallops or poached prawns.

This is clean, fresh and lively - a classic blend of macabeo, parellada and xarel-lo. At this price, it’s difficult to find another sparkling wine in the world that delivers such consistent quality and character. It has a delicacy about it. The leanness and minerality of this swine would pair well with melon.

The Brut Reserva is lighter in style, and less complex than the Aria Estate Brut, though it is still a beautifully balanced, clean sparkler that will serve well at any festivities. Light and crisp, with a full nutty flavor. Well-blended.

Slightly sweet on the nose, the aromas of baked fruit, cream soda and vanilla are welcoming. Interestingly, the wine is a bit more tart and refined on the palate, where zesty but full apple and pear flavors run the show. Not lean but definitely streamlined and acidic. More of a food wine than a stand-alone sipper.

Pale straw. Medium-bodied. Moderately extracted. Toasty aromas lead a creamy palate with citrus flavors and a full mouthfeel.

With aromatic touches of haystack and vanilla in addition to green apple and mineral, the nose is inviting. On the palate, it’s nice and lemony, with green apple acids offering a modest scour. Cleansing and ideal with simple finger foods. Very nice for the price.

This is as crisp and dry as a whispy reed, with a mild grassy note on the nose. It feels fresh and focused, with lime, peach and apple flavors. Fruity, fresh and easy to like from start to finish, this is what a Best Buy should be.

Simple, nice and not trying too hard, this basic brut is graced with nice apple and citrus aromas. The palate is wet, juicy and classic, with crisp apple, green herb and melon flavors. Round, clean and just crisp enough.

87 pts. : December 15, 2011

White fruits and candied apple aromas turn a little dusty with airing. The palate is crisp and standard, with no issues and juicy flavors of lightly sweetened apple, nectarine and citrus. Clean on the finish.

Aromas of stone fruits, lemon-lime and ripe citrus are crisp and welcoming. The palate follows the nose, offering lemon, lime and orange. Zesty, yet easygoing; the quintessential cava quaff. Good for parties and receptions because it tastes right yet costs only 10 bills.

86 pts. : December 15, 2007

Baked apple and spice aromas form a recognizable bouquet, while the palate oozes with grapefruit and tart apple flavors. This is zesty, clean, a little bit lean and fresh. It doesn’t offer much in the way of range or complexity, but it’s more than serviceable at the price point.

Tastes flavorful and complex, is rich in texture and long on the finish. Has powerful fruit and good balance.

Apple, a little spice, some minerals; a solid everyday value; dry and clean, very well made; a wonderful balance of delicate and rich.

Fresh and balanced, with a creamy bead supporting apple puree, pastry cream, anise and preserved lemon notes. Drink now.

Segura Viudas’ entry level Cava, the Non-Vintage Brut Reserva offers up a pleasant perfume of yeast notes, biscuit, and green apple. It is a straightforward, lively, slightly off-dry bubbly that is a good value for drinking over the next 12–18 months.

“Almost Champagne” in flavor and texture, this bright, zingy Cava offers herb, lime and banana aromas, plus citrus and yeast notes in the mouth. Falls off a tad at the end, but still a great value.

85 pts. : Mar/Apr 2005

Softened yellow tones filled with persistent streams of fine bubbles; scents of sweet bananas, vanilla, and toasted plantains followed by similar flavors with citrus notes beaming through the center of this straightforward refreshing sparkler.

84 pts. : December 15, 2005

Hay aromas mix with gritty vitamin notes. while the palate shows white peach and apple flavors. Soft, but it’s easy and familiar.

83 pts. : February 1, 2001

Light golden color. Some complexity on the nose with aromas of ripe fruit and melon. Depth of fruit on the palate with good mousse, some body and balance. The finish is intense and has some length as the fresh flavors come together nicely with good acid. Overall, this is a well made, pleasant wine.

: August 1, 2003

Complex and layered, with ripe apple fruitiness rising above a dry hint of apple skin, wrapped up in a citrus and mineral grip. For grilled shellfish.

: December 1, 1997

Smooth, with a lemon cream and light yeast scent, Segura Viudas Reserva is balanced toward a more lemony acidity in the finish than its softer Aria sibling. Serve this one with finger foods.

: January 1, 2009

Appealing, but light flavors; very crisp.

: November 1, 2008

Like all cavas, this earthy, citrus-tinged sparkling wine is a blend of the regional Spanish grapes Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo. Made in the same ways as Champagne (i.e., with the secondary fermentation that produces the carbonation occurring in the bottle), it’s one of several good-quality Cavas from Segura Viudas, which started producing sparkling wine at the end of the 19th century.

: June, 2001

Bright citrus, apple and vanilla aromas. Moderately clean and rich, with light ripe lemon and apple flavors; clean and crisp finish.

This Brut Cava is made up of 50% Macabeo, 35% Parellada, 15% Xarel-lo from the Alt Penedès region of Spain and made in the mèthode traditionnelle. The nose displays plenty of citrus and lemon peel, with a hint of pear as well. The palate consists of creamy lemon custard and toast, with a finish of crisp Granny Smith apples. This is, without a doubt, the best sparkling wine I have ever had for under $10. Segura Viudas continually impresses me with their Cava, and that is why you can always find a bottle in my refrigerator… because you never know when you may need to celebrate with bubbly. Drink now and often… especially with friends.

Segura Viudas was created just four decades ago by Manuel Segura Viudas, who purchased a 11th century fortified country house and built a state-of-the-art facility on its grounds. Today the winery sprawls over the original property and continues to produce the premium Cava for which this small bodega is known. “Today’s Cava drinkers are looking for fresh, floral notes and more finesse,” says José Maria Ferrer, who oversees Segura Viudas. Segura Viudas Aria Estate Brut was launched to fill in the demand for Cava with these qualities. It is made from the first pressing of grapes harvested relatively early. The resulting Cava is classy and crisp, with fresh fruit aromas. it is delightful with seafood and white meats like chicken.
