Cabernet Sauvignon, or more commonly referred to as “Cab”, is a grape varietal derived from a crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. There is some speculation as to where the birth of this grape varietal originally began, but it is believed to have originally taken root in the Bordeaux region. This resilient and widely planted grape boasts the title of “King Grape” of the red wine grape varieties. It can be found in virtually every wine region, particularly California and the aforementioned Bordeaux. Cabs are typically medium to full-bodied and can range from easy drinking with fresh fruit to intense fruit with heavy tannin. The main flavor markers for this grape are black currant and dark fruits such as blackberry or plum. Oak aging contributes flavors of vanilla, spice, smoke and pepper. More complex Cabs can also offer subtle flavors of chocolate, tobacco, earth, and coffee. |
