The Best of Premier Select
Let us help take the guesswork out of buying a bottle of wine. Premier Select wines have been hand-picked by our staff for their exceptional quality and value, and these are some of our favorite Premier Select picks!
Top-Rated Barolos
The Piedmont region in Italy produces some of the world's best wines, perhaps none as fine as the beloved red wines from Barolo. Primarily made from the iconic Nebbiolo grape, the region's unique soil and climate produces expressions of this grape which can't be replicated. Here are some top-rated examples of great Barolo wines.
Rose Season Isn't Over Yet
Summer may be winding down, but rosé season continues on for a few more weeks (and for some of us, it's year round!). Here are some recommendations to get you through the beginning of fall.
Bordeaux Bargains
When you think of Bordeaux, you often think of the super collector wines that can go for thousands of dollars per bottle. However, there are also some terrific bargains coming out of this world-famous wine region. Here are some Bordeaux bargains that are sure to delight.
A wine of real density and power, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Padrone hits the palate with a rush of blackcurrant, lavender, mint, licorice, blood orange and scorched earth. Deep, virile and broad on the palate, the 2013 captures the natural structure of the vintage. Best of all, it should drink well with just a few more years in bottle.
The 2013 Proprietary Red Padrone, the winery’s flagship wine, is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc aged 21 months in 100% new French oak prior to being bottle unfiltered. This wine exhibits an inky purple color, notes of graphite, blueberry, blackberry, a hint of cocoa and a dense, full-bodied super-rich mouthfeel with good acidity and strong, but well-integrated tannin. Give this wine 6–7 years and drink over the following 35–40.

Dark violet color. Pungent cherry and blackberry on the fragrant nose, along with hints of black pepper, olive and baking spices. Appealingly sweet and pliant in texture, offering energetic red and dark berry, star anise and candied violet flavors that are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Smooth tannins frame a long, spicy finish that strongly echoes the dark berry note. (Josh Raynolds)
The 2019 Crozes-Hermitage is a spicy, complex, incredibly satisfying Crozes with textbook darker berry fruits as well as notes of peppery herbs, violets, and loamy earth. The tannins are nicely integrated and perfectly ripe, and it’s going to evolve gracefully for a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The only one of the 2019 reds to have been bottled at the time of my visit, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage is a super effort, and it should represent a terrific value (the 2018 sells for about $30). Hints of violets accent blueberries and cassis on the nose in this full-bodied, concentrated offering. Rich, velvety and a bit tannic, it’s an impressive négoce bottling. (Joe Czerwinski)
A perfumed style, with silky-edged red currant and Damson notes flecked with sandalwood, white pepper and sanguine hints that then linger prettily on the dusty finish. Drink now through 2025. 2,500 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
Primary Grape: Shiraz

Shows enticing aromas of toffee, cream, dried apricot and caramel. Full-bodied, very sweet and thick, with honey and caramel flavors. Long and rich, oozing with sweet, ripe fruit, this is like liquid candy. Best after 2016.
You get both apricots and honeyed botrytis aromas that are followed through by a dry core, very full-bodied with richness, the sweetness of the yellow jam fruits, apricots and mangoes gliding over the palate. Delicious, and certainly ageworthy.
Full yellow-golden. Expressive aromas of pineapple, coconut, sweet vanillin oak and spices. Then wonderfully thick, fat and sweet, with the exotic coconut character carrying through in the mouth. Finishes saline and powerful, with palate-staining flavors of pineapple, coconut and spicy oak. Conveys a strong impression of solidity.
Primary Grape: Sémillon

The 2022 Pessimist is an easy-drinking blend of 59% Petite Sirah, 20% Zinfandel, 14% Syrah and 7% Lagrein matured for 10 months in 60% new French oak. The nose is loaded with ripe berry and baked plum fruit, plus nuances of cracked pepper and mortadella. The full-bodied palate’s savory fruit is complemented by pleasantly chewy tannins, and it has surprising freshness. It’s perfect for barbecue. (Erin Brooks)
This bottling delivers the ripe power that so many want, in a package that’s balanced by savory elements. Dense aroma of tar, char, asphalt, cassis and cocoa show on the nose. The palate is rich and creamy, loaded with coffee bean, coconut husk and baked fruit flavors. (Matt Kettmann)
Primary Grape: Petite Sirah

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Les Trois Croix features notions of baked blackberries, Black Forest cake and licorice with touches of dried herbs and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with bright, precise black fruit and savory layers, framed by grainy tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

The 2021 Appellation Lunlunta Malbec was produced with grapes from vines planted in 1930 at 920 meters in altitude. It fermented with full malolactic and had an élevage of six to eight months in barrels, some 40% of them new. The cool year kept the alcohol to a moderate 13.5% with the depth and wisdom from old vines that somehow transmit a sense of harmony. This classical zone in Maipú produces traditional Malbecs with varietal typicity, floral with berries and herbs and a touch of sweet spices, fresh and balanced with some earthy rusticity and juicy fruit. 288,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)
A pretty fruity malbec here with a hint of dark olives, spices and strawberries. Lots of fruit on the fleshy, medium-bodied palate with sleek but present tannins. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)
The 2021 Malbec Catena Appellation Lunlunta from Luján de Cuyo was aged for eight months in a third new barrels. Dark purple in the glass. The nose presents notes of ripe plum, white pepper, syrup, tobacco and blackberry jam along with a touch of oak. Broad and creamy with precise freshness, it opens up to fill the mouth with flavors that last, as is generally true of Lunlunta reds. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

Black cherry and sliced blood-orange aromas. Medium to full body, orange-peel undertones and a juicy finish. Clean, focused and real. Delicious all round. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. (James Suckling)
The 2021 Cerasuolo di Vittoria wafts up, more savory than sweet, with smokey earth tones and crushed rocks giving way to black raspberry. This washes across the palate with mineral-tinged red and blue berry fruits complicated by inner herbal tones. Brisk acidity maintains energy throughout as the 2021 tapers off with a salty flourish, leaving licorice and spice hints to linger. (Eric Guido)

Proprietary Red Wine
2015 / 750 ml.
Item #: 46287
The 2015 Sugarloaf Mountain Proprietary Red that began as an equal-part blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot seems to be an equal follow-up to the perfect 2014. Incredible aromatics of spring flowers and blue and black fruits are followed by a long, deep, skyscraper-like wine with explosive fruit intensity, loads of glycerin and a wonderfully, fleshy, succulent mouthfeel, which is certainly a characteristic of the top 2015s. This should drink nicely for 15–20 years.
The 2015 Proprietary Red Wine Sugarloaf Mountain is laced with the essence of ripe red cherry, plum, sage, wild flowers and savory herbs are all beautifully delineated. Voluptuous and racy to the core, the 2015 is a classic Russell Bevan wine built on layers of flavor and textural intensity.
Rich and generous, offering an array of dark-hued fruits. The ample structure bears merit, with fine-grained, dusty tannins. Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2021 through 2032. 500 cases made. (James Laube)

Champoux Vineyard
2017 / 750 ml.
Item #: 56442
A resounding success, the deep ruby-colored 2017 Sorella displays beautiful purple highlights and explodes from the glass with aromas of blackberry, cigar box and dried tobacco with hints of graphite and dusty purple flowers. Full-bodied, the wine is ripe and round, with an immaculate mouthfeel, showing an impressive depth of flavor. With succulent red and black fruit expressions and soft cinnamon spice tones from oak, the wine is a whirlwind of complexity across the mid-palate. Emerging with a balanced structure and lifted tannic backbone, the wine lingers with persistence and intention, as flavors of dusty bitter dark chocolate, black plum and spiced dark cherries flutter across the finish. Bravo, this is absolutely stunning and will drink amazingly for the next two decades to come.
The 2017 Sorella is a knockout blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, sourced from the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Heady crème de cassis tones combine with suggestions of chocolate covered espresso bean, garrigue and black florals. While obviously dense, the core remains very fresh, delivering serious minerality and a lengthy finish. Brilliant to consume even now, this has a long way to go in the cellar.

Limpid ruby-red. Highly perfumed cherry, red currant, smoked meat, coconut and candied rose scents, along with tobacco and succulent herb nuances that build as the wine opens up. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering energetic cherry-vanilla, floral pastille, cola and mocha flavors that are sharpened by a jolt of spiciness. Shows sharp clarity and sweet, repeating red fruit character on the impressively long, gently tannic and smoke-tinged finish, which leaves a suave floral note behind. (Josh Raynolds)
The seldom-produced 2011 Señorío de P Peciña Gran Reserva shows how traditional Rioja is more sensitive to the character of the vintage and in a way more transparent, if you want. The fruit feels quite ripe, a little candied, and the oak is quite obvious, while the palate is lacking in the middle and quite marked by the élevage. This spent four years in used American oak barrels. 11,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2017. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The 2022 La Cuadrilla is a blend of Syrah and Grenache with a smaller portion of Mourvèdre. It offers slowly unfurling scents of wild berries, tar, turned earth and wildflowers. The medium-bodied palate is bright and silky, with spicy, earthy fruit and a long, perfumed finish. 10,500 cases were made, and profits go to the vineyard workers at Stolpman. (Erin Brooks)
Based on 60% Syrah, 30% Grenache, and the rest equal parts Mourvèdre and Sangiovese, the 2022 La Cuadrilla Red Wine has quality strawberry and crunchy cherry fruits as well as lots of peppery herbs and floral nuances. Medium-bodied, juicy, and easygoing, with integrated, bright acidity and a great finish, it’s a delicious red to enjoy over the coming 5–6 years. This is California’s answer to a terrific Côtes du Rhône! (Jeb Dunnuck)

A concentrated and spicy dry riesling that has tons of pink-grapefruit, apricot and mirabelle aromas. Impressive textural complexity, yet this still retains wonderful freshness and delicacy. Extremely long, delicious finish. A cuvée of 60% Josef vineyard, 20% Magdalena vineyard and 20% HJW vineyards. Drink or hold.
This blend of estate vineyards is consistently a favorite year over year. The 2020 delivers intense aromas of fennel pollen, lemon oil, yellow apple, tangerine and sliced ginger, making it utterly compelling. Ample apple and stone fruit flavors blend with earthy, spicy elements on the dry palate, with well placed acidity and a pithy texture lending support. (Alexander Peartree)
Winegrower Fred Merwarth finds that his Josef Vineyard ripens at just the right level for a dry style, so he focuses this Reserve on that site. The wine is more lemony and citrus-based than the 2020 Dry Riesling (also recommended here). It has a mildly herbal attack giving way to a midweight mouthfeel that’s comfortable and slightly tense, especially in the finish. For herb-roasted halibut.
The 2020 Dry Riesling Reserve comes in with eight grams of residual sugar and 12.7% alcohol and is perceptibly dry. It is a blend of 60% grapes from the Josef Vineyard, 22% from Magdalena and 18% from HJW, meaning that it has every chance to be a great wine, just like the pricier single-vineyard offerings. It is consistently one of the best intersections in the lineup for quality and price. This year it is about as good as anything in the lineup, just like last year. Deep and lingering on the finish, it has controlled power, the acidity soaked up by the concentration and countered by the modest sugar. It’s delicious but serious, sturdy but lively. It will be interesting to see how this compares with its predecessor, the 2019, as they both age. I suspect the 2019 will win as time goes on, but this is a very respectable competitor today and a pretty terrific wine with some potential upside in the cellar. (Mark Squires)
Ripe and pure, with white peach, pear and quince notes that are nicely streamlined through the anise-tinged finish. Drink now. 1,800 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Juicy and focused, offering dried cherry, fig and bergamot notes inlaid with red licorice and fruitcake flavors that marry the flattering and racy sides. Drink now through . 45,200 cases made.
The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014 with 105.23 grams per liter of residual sugar. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group’s lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. (Around 60 degrees Fahrenheit is a lot better than room temperature most of the time, to be sure, not just here.) Overall, the weight, complexity, mouth feel and grip on the finish still make this my favorite of the group of 10s submitted by Taylor Fladgate this issue, although it’s close and there are some pros and cons. This comes with a bar top cork, i.e., not intended to be aged (although it most certainly can hold a couple of decades barring cork failures).
This very complete aged tawny has all the right nuts and fruit characters that show a Port that still looks back to its fruity origins. The style is ripe, full and sweet, a mellow wine that only hints at the spirit behind it.
Soft and glistening with a light rosewater perfume, this delicate Tawny balances sweet cherry and wood flavors with plenty of acidity so the wine finishes clean.

This vivid Champagne shows up-front and linear definition, thanks to rapierlike acidity, with finely meshed flavors of ripe black cherry and mandarin orange fruit, raw almond, anise and cardamom spice as well as a touch of honeycomb, which all unfurl and expand on the fine, creamy palate. Sleek acidity continues through to the finish, with additional racy character provided by a streak of minerally saline and chalk, which gains momentum through the midpalate and rings out on the well-cut, lasting finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2040. 9,181 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
The 2014 Cristal is another in a long line of gorgeous wines from Roederer and long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. A dazzling, vibrant Champagne, the 2014 impresses with a stunning combination of fruit density and linear energy that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of 2012 and 2008. At times, the bubbles feel totally wrapped up in waves of creamy, resonant fruit to the point the mousse is barely perceptible, especially with aeration. The flavors are bright and finely sculpted, leaning very much into the citrus, floral and mineral end of the spectrum.
The 2014 Cristal is a terrific effort that transcends the vintage. Bursting from the glass with expressive aromas of ripe citrus fruit, nectarine, white flowers, freshly baked bread and subtle hints of honeycomb, it’s medium to full-bodied, vinous and fleshy, with an exuberant core of fruit that’s girdled by racy acids, resulting in a wine that’s simultaneously chiseled and demonstrative, meaning that early appeal doesn’t come at the expense of the requisite tension for long-term cellaring. Concluding with a long, aromatic and intensely chalky finish, it is a brilliant Champagne that will offer a broad drinking window. This bottle was disgorged in June 2021 with seven grams per liter dosage.
