Norton first produced the D.O.C. wine from Luján de Cuyo in 1991, but somehow, I had never tasted it officially. The 2021 D.O.C., the first (and only) real appellation of origin in Argentina, is the first D.O.C. wine I tasted. It was produced with grapes from the different districts, Perdriel, Agrelo, Las Compuertas, Vistalba and Lunlunta and made in the most traditional and classical style but with clean fruit and clean oak, direct and straight. It has good ripeness, 14% alcohol and a textbook profile. They shortened the time in oak (changing the regulations of the appellation of origin), and this was in barrel for only six months and then transferred to concrete. It’s balanced and elegant with very fine tannins and the violet notes of Malbec, velvety, gentle and easy to drink. They do 600,000 bottles of this. It’s a great value and a great example of the Malbec in Luján. (Luis Gutiérrez)

From Luján de Cuyo, the 2021 Malbec was aged for six months in used barrels. The nose offers ripe plum with jam and oak notes. Plush and dry on the palate with a velvety texture and full body. Expressive and fluid. A pleasant red, exactly what one would hope for from a Luján de Cuyo Malbec. The continued significance of this wine—whose style hasn’t charged much over the years—is evidence of the variety’s success with consumers. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

A blend of several vineyards, matured in 65% new French oak, it’s medium to full-bodied and tightly wound but reasonably textured, with a long, velvety finish. Drink it over the next decade or so. At “only” $50, Amici’s 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a relative bargain in the rarefied air of Napa Valley Cabs. At this point in its 18 months of élevage (tasted in November 2022), it’s cedary but backed by ample cassis and blueberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it’s smooth, silky, and streamlined from front to back, with a lingering finish and mouthwatering berries that balance out the soft tannins and mocha overtones. Cogno’s 2016 Barolo Cascina Nuova is absolutely gorgeous. Pliant and expressive on the palate, the 2016 has a touch more mid-palate sweetness and texture than in the past, when the wine has been more nervous in feel. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, wild flowers, cedar, sweet tobacco and anise all open up effortlessly. Silky tannins add to its considerable immediacy and appeal. This is such a pretty wine in its peer group and also a terrific example of how attractive more modestly priced Barolos are in 2016.

The Bovio 2016 Barolo Arborina draws its fruit from 45-year-old vines and shows extra intensity and definition that comes in part thanks to the advanced age of the plants. However, the wine also magically reflects the elegance of the site with delicate berry nuances followed by licorice, aniseed and crushed stone. Gentle and understated, with lovely precision, the 2019 Albe is a hushed wine that is more about energy than size. I have seen the Albe really blossom with a few years in bottle. The 2019 Barolo Berri was tasted from two barrels, one of which utilized whole bunches in the fermentation. While both offered freshness and purity, the second barrel offered more significant spice in its profile, with more depth of fruit, and is firmly structured at this stage. The components are compelling and should make for a wonderful finished blend in a few years’ time. (Audrey Frick)

The 2019 Barolo Berri is tightly wound and austere in the early going. Crushed red berry fruit, iron, dried herbs and white pepper give the Berri a striking aromatic top register. The tannins are a bit nervy, though, so a few years in bottle are warranted. Frost decimated the crop at Torriglione, which is why this wine (typically the Barolo del Comune di La Morra) is Berri in 2019. To be exact, there is 4% Torriglione, as that was the wine used for topping. (Antonio Galloni)
