Critical Acclaim

SP96 Wine Spectator Jan 31, 1998

"This classic wine is only showing a portion of what it’s got to offer, but it’s excellent even so. Inky in color, with masses of berry, violet, mint, mineral and cherry character, and full in body, with tons of velvety tannins and a moderate finish. Needs time to open. Best after 2004." (96 pts.)

RP95+ Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 28th Feb 1997

"This wine is evolving into one of Mouton-Rothschild’s greatest vintages. It boasts an inky purple color, as well as a powerful, blockbuster nose of explosively jammy cassis intermingled with toasty new oak, minerals, and spice. The wine is layered, with extraordinary depth, richness, glycerin, and length. This is undoubtedly the most exciting Mouton since the 1986, with a more precocious, up-front character than that wine. A formidable tannin level combined with low acidity (the wine’s PH is around 3.8), and magnificent layers of fruit suggest the 1995 will be approachable after bottling, but I expect it to close down after 6–7 years in the bottle, not to reemerge for 15–20 years. Anticipated maturity: 2005–2030." (95–97+ pts.)

WS93 Wine & Spirits February 1, 1999

"Seemingly New World in its satin-textured ripeness of fruit, yet underneath the ’95 Mouton has the stubborn and stolid structure of a young Pauillac. Tough black tannins mask the precise fruit character, and though the wine is huge in scale, it doesn’t yield much of itself. Mouton is usually flashier on release, but for now, this vintage is quite backward. And it goes without saying, this is a wine for long-term aging." (93 pts.)

ST92+ Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar May/Jun 1998

"Ruby-red, not quite as deep as the ’96. Exotic, sweet aromas of currant lead pencil, spice and woodsmoke. A huge wine that conveys a sense of sheer power, but not quite as delineated or stylish as the ’96. this really explodes on the aftertaste, but the ’96 is more subtle. Clearly firth-grown size, but less fine that the ’96." (92+ pts.)

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.
