Critical Acclaim

SP95 Wine Spectator Web only – 2008

"Plum and blackberry on the nose, with hints of dried violets. Wet earth. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, very chewy and rich. Long and caressing. Still very tight. Give it time. Very layered and structured. Much better than I remember. Impressive. ’77/’85/’97 blind Port retrospective. Best after 2010." (95 pts.)

ST90 Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar May/Jun 2000

"Deep, saturated ruby. Subtle, complex, lively aromas of blackberry, flowers, licorice, spices and mint. Rich supple and concentrated, if not as supersweet or densely structured as some outstanding recent vintages of Graham. But this nicely balanced port boasts lovely mouthwatering vinosity and enough backbone for medium-term aging. Finishes spicy and very long, with strong black fruit flavors. An easygoing style of Graham." (90 pts.)

WS90 Wine & Spirits April 1, 2000

"A bright and relatively light vintage of Graham, this emphasizes charm and accessibility over density and power. Red fruit flavors fill out the mid-palate, then a chocolately richness of tannin structures the finish with invisible ease. Grip is not immediately apparent, though there’s a stony hardness under all the supple, balanced fruit. The finish tastes of raspberries pressed into chocolate, comforting and ready to drink right now. A Vintage Port without pain." (90 pts.)

SP90 Wine Spectator Feb 29, 2000

"Lovely claret-like aromas of plums, cherries and spices. Full- to medium-bodied, with a solid core of silky tannins and a long, medium-sweet finish. Very refined. A solid Graham. Best after 2007." (90 pts.)

RP93 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 1st Jan 2000

"Blackberries, licorice, and melted asphalt stand out in this full-bodied, beautifully made vintage port’s moderately intense bouquet. It is not one of the great Graham’s ports, and is less sweet than normal, but it is full-bodied, rich, concentrated, and impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2004–2025." (93 pts.)

Portugal is most famous (and justifiably so) for its Port wines, fortified wines that are typically sweet and often served with dessert. Port wines come in many styles such as Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, etc, and are classified by how they were produced.

Besides Port, however, Portugal is also one of the fastest-rising wine countries in the world (as far as quality and production) when it comes to table wines. You'll find some unbelievable values in Portuguese table wines, with grapes like Touriga Nacional at the forefront.
