Dense, dusty tannins put the grip on the finish, yet this is also vibrant and finds a nice equilibrium in the end, with the fruit returning. The Frescobaldi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino CastelGiocondo shows dark fruit, plum and spice. The wine offers good density and richness, but the aromatic intensity is downplayed compared to some of its peers from this classic vintage. Other than that, all the wine’s elements are in the right place with cherry, wild plum, rose and tilled earth. Production is an ample 300,000 bottles.

Sour cherries, spiced orange and dusty dried flowers open in the glass, as the 2016 Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino slowly blossoms. The textures are creamy, contrasted by cooling minerality and juicy acids, as tart red berries saturate under an air of sweet herbs and inner florals. This finishes dry yet long, with chewy tannins and remnants of crunchy red fruit. The 2016 Castelgiocondo needs some time to come together, yet it has all of the balance necessary to mature into a real beauty.

Taking on a somewhat darker expression, the 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is floral and concentrated with candied blackcurrant, lavender, and graphitic mineral earth. It is full bodied without being weighted and has finely polished tannins, a stony texture, and a warming finish. On the back end, a delicate amaro-like finish emerges, with hints of tea leaf and iron earth. Allow for another year or so and drink over the following 10–15 years. (Audrey Frick)

Here’s a wine I highly recommend. Packaged with a black label, the Volpaia 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is certified organic Sangiovese from a site with sandstone soils that rises up to a cool 600 meters above sea level in Radda in Chianti. These well-priced results are perfumed and vibrant with black fruit, crushed stone and wild rose. I especially appreciate those drying mineral tones that match the wine’s elegant, mid-weight mouthfeel. Some 60,000 bottles were released. (Monica Larner)

This is the so-called “green label” Brunello with proprietor Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini’s signature on the front of the bottle. Her classic 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is sharp and tonic with wild raspberry, cassis, lilac, earth and garden herb. There is a sweet note of sour cherry on the mid-weight finish. This is an ample 160,000-bottle production made in a traditional approach with two years in casks made with both Slavonian and French oak.

Plenty of sweet cherries and plums with some chocolate on both the nose and palate. It’s medium-to full-bodied with medium to full tannins that are plush and succulent. Fresh citrus to the fruit at the end. Remains cool and layered. Drinkable now, but better after 2024.

The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino impresses with a soothing mix of spiced herbal teas, crushed strawberries, balsam herbs and hints of smoke. Its round and silky textures wash ripe red berries and sweet spices across the senses, with contrasting hints of sour citrus and a building minerality toward the close. While a bit short, this is fresh, leaving nuances of tart black currant and licorice to linger. Tasting the 2019 Rosso from Poggio Il Castellare has me excited to taste the Brunello annata in years to come. (Eric Guido)

The Tenuta degli Dei 2017 Cavalli sees a base of Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and is a terrific dinner wine. It is polished and deep with some of the fruit nuances you can expect of this vintage. However, the overall effect is balanced and smooth with plenty of fruity power, weight and length.
