Beautiful Tuscan Wines

Beautiful Tuscan Wines | WineTransit.com

The picturesque landscapes of Tuscany produce a wide array of equally beautiful wines, particularly reds. The traditional Sangiovese-based reds (Chianti, Brunello) are celebrated wherever wine is enjoyed, while the internationally-styled Super Tuscans (featuring Cabernet, Merlot, and/or Syrah) continue to grow in popularity. Here are a few of our favorite bottles from our extensive Tuscan wine list.

Muralia Manolibera

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 47570

VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Manolibera is laced with crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint, sweet pipe tobacco and orange peel. This effusive mid-weight red is a real charmer. I especially like the feeling of transparency here. (Antonio Galloni)

JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 11, 2020
Black-cherry and blackberry aromas with minerals and fresh flowers, following through to a full body with firm, silky tannins that are polished and intense. Lovely finesse and length. Drink after 2023.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Starts out with macerated plum and cherry fruit, shaded by tobacco, iron and earth flavors. Dense, dusty tannins put the grip on the finish, yet this is also vibrant and finds a nice equilibrium in the end, with the fruit returning. Best from 2024 through 2042. 27,000 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The Frescobaldi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino CastelGiocondo shows dark fruit, plum and spice. The wine offers good density and richness, but the aromatic intensity is downplayed compared to some of its peers from this classic vintage. Other than that, all the wine’s elements are in the right place with cherry, wild plum, rose and tilled earth. Production is an ample 300,000 bottles.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
Sour cherries, spiced orange and dusty dried flowers open in the glass, as the 2016 Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino slowly blossoms. The textures are creamy, contrasted by cooling minerality and juicy acids, as tart red berries saturate under an air of sweet herbs and inner florals. This finishes dry yet long, with chewy tannins and remnants of crunchy red fruit. The 2016 Castelgiocondo needs some time to come together, yet it has all of the balance necessary to mature into a real beauty.

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 7, 2023
Attractive aromas of ripe cherries, dried strawberries, dried orange peel, spices and crushed stones, following through to a medium to full body with compact tannins that are firm and finely grained. Smooth and textured with vivid fruit underneath and a lingering finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Sep 2023
In the bottle with the black label, the organic 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers ripe fruit with measured intensity that never feels heavy or overdone. Achieving this level of balance is not easy in a hot growing season such as this. This wine is characterized by an especially linear and direct personality that pushes it over the palate with good momentum. An ambitious 60,000 bottles were released. (Monica Larner)

Poggio Il Castellare Rosso di Montalcino

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 57747

JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022
Ripe berries, sweet tobacco and a hint of walnut oil on the nose, following through to a medium-bodied palate with fruit and spice-coated tannins that give a fresh, almost tangy finish. Bright and tasty now, but may settle into something even better. Try from 2023.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino impresses with a soothing mix of spiced herbal teas, crushed strawberries, balsam herbs and hints of smoke. Its round and silky textures wash ripe red berries and sweet spices across the senses, with contrasting hints of sour citrus and a building minerality toward the close. While a bit short, this is fresh, leaving nuances of tart black currant and licorice to linger. Tasting the 2019 Rosso from Poggio Il Castellare has me excited to taste the Brunello annata in years to come. (Eric Guido)

Tenuta Degli Dei Cavalli

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59505

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, July 14, 2021
Here is a red with a solid palate of red berries, crushed stone and fresh flowers. Full-bodied with beautifully crafted tannins that are soft and relaxed. The fruit character is complex with some fresh mushrooms and rose petals to the dark fruit. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will be much better in two or three years. Drink after 2022. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2021
The Tenuta degli Dei 2017 Cavalli sees a base of Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and is a terrific dinner wine. It is polished and deep with some of the fruit nuances you can expect of this vintage. However, the overall effect is balanced and smooth with plenty of fruity power, weight and length. Production is about 16,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)
