The generic Napa 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, aged 18 months in about 59% new French oak. The wine is deep ruby, round and juicy with plenty of blackcurrant fruit, licorice and cherries. It is medium-bodied, soft, round and ideal for drinking over the next 10–15 years.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon springs from the glass with lifted crème de cassis, violets and chocolate box notes plus hints of lilacs, raspberry leaves, anise and cardamom. The perfumed black fruit preserves and chocolate-laced notes completely pack the full-bodied palate, with soft, velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing very long and very spicy. Definitely one for hedonists seeking immediate gratification.

This is a very polished and precise young wine with beautiful depth and intensity. Full and sexy. It shows blueberry and black currant character with walnut and chocolate undertones. The tannins have a lovely texture. Joy to taste.
    RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Apr 2016
The 2015 Smith-Haut-Lafitte is adorned with a special label to celebrate the 650th anniversary of the château and the 25th vintage made under the ownership of Daniel and Florence Cathiard. It is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, picked between 23 September until 12 October with the Cabernet Franc. Matured in 65% new oak (although technical director Fabien Teitgen mentioned that he could have added more if he felt it would benefit), it has a very intense, blueberry and crème de cassis scented bouquet, a touch more opulent than its peers with hints of freshly shucked oyster shell developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin couched in gorgeous, satin-textured black cherry and cassis fruit, tinged with cedar and pencil shavings. It lingers very long and sensually in the mouth, completing a sophisticated and powerful Smith Haut-Lafitte that should age in splendid fashion.

There’s huge potential here, now only just hinting at its rich fruits and concentrated tannins. Dark and very firmly textured, it is going to be rich as well as finely balanced.
    SP94+94–97 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2016
Ripe and succulent in feel, with warm plum and blackberry confiture notes leading the way. Picks up singed alder and tar details through the finish, gaining extra depth. Very pure, but with ample grip in reserve. A serious wine.
    VN93+93–96+ pts. - Vinous - Apr 2016
The 2015 Smith Haut Lafitte is superb. Dark, powerful and towering, the 2015 exudes richness and a level of intensity in all directions that is remarkable. This is an especially dark, brooding Grand Vin built on serious depth, intensity and structure, and yet there is more than enough richness in the fruit to balance things out. The extreme heat of the year appears to have baked out some of the aromatic nuance. It will be interesting to see if that dimension opens up. For now, the 2015 is massively shut down. Readers will have to be especially patient, as the 2015 won’t be ready to drink for some time. Both en primeur samples I tasted were less expressive than the separate components were when I tasted them from barrel in late January 2016, so I won’t be surprised at all if the bottled wine comes in at the top of this range. Tasted two times.

    2014 / 750 ml. | Item#36381

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2017
This is marked by a strong herb and oak mixture and framed by a lively burst of red currant, red licorice, dusty, cedary oak and licorice notes. Drink now through 2030. 36,400 cases made.
    WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - October 1, 2017
One taster described this as “yummy” in its chocolate-mousse tannins; another found it youthful and closed. That dichotomy runs through the wine, a contrast of rich, round textural pleasure and more seriously firm, mineral cool. There’s spicy red fruit at its core, adding to the wine’s youthful tension. Decant it for something as rich as braised oxtail, or let it develop further in the bottle.

Mint and berry aromas with hints of spices. Medium body, firm tannins and a medium finish. No reason to wait. Drink now. Always excellent.

  6. Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon
    Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon

    2013 / 750 ml. | Item#42387

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Mar 2016
Hobbs has hit the bull’s-eye with his selection of 2013 Cabernet Sauvignons. There are 5,800+ cases of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which has some Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot in the blend. About 40% of this comes from their estate vineyard in Coombsville. This is just beautiful, an earthy, graphite-laden, crème de cassis-scented wine with plenty of depth, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, opulent finish. This wine hasn’t been priced yet, but this is a beauty, and really over-delivers for a generic Napa cuvée. Drink it over the next 10+ years.
    VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2014
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is gorgeous. Vibrant, delineated flavors jump from the glass in a nuanced Cabernet Sauvignon that pulses with energy and pure tension. The flavors are dark, bold and intense to the core. Blue/blackish fruit, spices, menthol and new leather inform a tense finish laced with exotic blood orange overtones. Dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot round out the blend. In this vintage, the Cabernet contains a high percentage of fruit from Hobbs’ Nathan Coombs estate vineyard.
