  1. Evodia

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#31225

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Dec 2018
The incredibly perfumed 2017 Evodia was true to its name, as apparently ’evodia’ means fragrant in the ancient Greek language. It had been bottled for a few months when I tasted it and it was very harmonious and expressive. They have reduced quantities and raised the price a bit, going into a different segment of the market, definitely a better wine than what I tasted from 2016. It achieved almost 15% alcohol in 2017, one of the earliest harvests of the last 20 years after some spring frosts and a very dry summer. Only 20% of the volume matured in barrel, while the rest was kept in concrete vats for six months. It’s very easy to drink, with unnoticeable tannins and a long, lingering finish. Super tasty and impressive for the price. 150,000 bottles were produced.

  2. Castaño Alcaria

    Old Vines
    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#50069

    JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - February 21, 2018
A custom cuvée made for importer Eric Solomon with Jean-Marc Lafage, the 2016 Alcaria is a blend of 50% Monastrell, 25% Syrah, and the balance Garnacha, brought up in a mix of French and American oak barrels. An incredible value that more than over-delivers, this deeply colored red boasts terrific notes of ripe black fruits, chocolate, smoked herbs, and graphite. With full-boded richness and a sexy, opulent style on the palate, it opens up nicely in the glass and should keep for 2–4 years.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2017
One of the new custom cuvées for their U.S. importer Eric Solomon is the 2016 Alcaria, which is about to be launched. It’s a GSM-ish blend of 60% Monastrell with 25% Syrah and the remaining Garnacha Tintorera with a short time in French and American oak barriques. It’s a little reduced right now after bottling (most probably because of the Syrah), so you might need to give it an energetic decanting or some more time in bottle. The meat component in many wines in this region is part of the signature and the rustic elegance of these wines. There is no reduction in the palate, where the tannins are fine-grained and there’s good balance. 120,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2017.
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2017
Floral and mineral notes frame juicy cherry and red plum flavors in this fresh red. Crisp acidity keeps the supple texture focused, while firm tannins give this some heft. Monastrell, Syrah and Garnacha Tintorera. Drink now through 2024. 6,000 cases imported.
    WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2018
This blend of Monastrell, Syrah and Garnacha Tintorera feels lively, its dark plum and berry aromas laced with chocolate. Smacking tannins create a dry sensation, framing ripe black plum and prune flavors. Complex notes of spice and tomato emerge on the firm finish.

Some modern, meaty oak and spice, laid across ripe dark cherries and plums here. The palate has a very smooth and slick feel with a succulent, juicy and attractively fresh, dark-plum finish. Handy depth. Drink or hold.

    JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, August 2, 2018
Very ripe and slightly raw oak over black fruit and coconut candy. The palate has dense, chewy fruit and really assertive tannins. Needs a year or two to settle in.

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#48795

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2017
I hadn’t encountered their entry-level, young and unoaked Monastrell for a while, but I tasted the 2016 Monastrell, which fermented in stainless steel and was kept in concrete vats for four to six months. They used some 25% to 30% full clusters in the vinification, and I’ve never smelled anything like this from Castaño. This is floral and fresh, elegant and balanced, with moderate extraction, ripe tannins and a very pleasant mouthfeel with clean, focused flavors. This is almost too serious for the price. Wow! In the future, they might do some full clusters; I tasted an experimental lot with 100% full clusters in 2016, and the wine was amazing. 250,000 bottles produced; there are three 80,000-bottle lots as similar as possible, but all the bottles destined for the U.S. market are from the same lot.

  8. Viña Zorzal Garnacha

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#42170

    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
The entry-level red simply called 2019 Garnacha is what they define as their regional bottling, using grapes from the villages of de Corella, Cintruénigo and Fitero, produced in an approachable and easy-to-understand way. It had a gentle vinification, starting with grapes of moderate ripeness with a good pH, fermented with indigenous yeasts and using 20% full clusters. The difference in vintage is noticeable when tasted with a majority of 2018s; this is a clearly riper and more open vintage, with a more Mediterranean character, with sweet fruit and aromatic herbs. It reminds me of some of my favorite old-time unoaked Garnachas from Navarra. It has a serious palate, with freshness and chalky tannins and a serious finish. Great value! 110,000 bottles produced. It was bottled unoaked in February 2020.

    JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, July 26, 2019
A vibrant nose with ripe dark berries, as well as an earthy thread. The palate has such rich, fleshy fruit that sails on fine, velvety tannin. Impressive purity, too. Drink or hold.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021
Deep violet. Spice-accented red berry and cherry pit aromas are complemented by suggestions of licorice and pungent flowers. Fleshy and appealingly sweet on the palate, offering juicy raspberry, cherry cola and floral pastille flavors underscored by a smoky mineral quality. Shows very good balance and focus on the incisive finish, which is framed by harmonious tannins.
    SP8585 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2020
This fruit-centered red is fresh and lively, with berry and cherry flavors, accented by vanilla and licorice notes. Snappy acidity and light, firm tannins keep this focused. Cariñena, Syrah and Garnacha. Drink now through 2024. 11,000 cases made, 3,800 cases imported.

  12. Honoro Vera Monastrell Organic Monastrell Grapes

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#41929

    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Sep 2020
The certified-organic Monastrell 2019 Honoro Vera Organic fermented in open-top stainless steel vats with selected indigenous yeasts and was bottled unoaked. It’s quite similar to the regular Monastrell, all from their own vineyard with serious varietal aromas and a fruit-driven and juicy personality, serious and varietal, approachable but not banal, transcending its price point. Great value. 216,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2020.
    VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021
Dark ruby. Cassis, cherry and licorice scents and flavors take on a smoky nuance with air. Shows good depth and chewy texture. A peppery flourish adds spicy bite to a nicely persistent finish shaped by dusty tannins.

  13. Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#33180

    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2020
Their regional wine achieves unheard of levels of complexity and nuance with the 2018 Pétalos del Bierzo. It’s a blend from over 90 hectares of vineyards in different part of Bierzo, 20% of the grapes from their own vineyards in Corullón, including some 4% white grapes. The rest is purchased from 180+ families with whom they have a long-term relationship. Some of these vineyards are not yet certified organic, but the objective is to achieve it in the next five years. It’s mostly Mencía, but there are other grapes varieties in the vineyards; they estimate about 3% of other reds, Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne, Negreda, etc. and around 4% whites, Valenciana, Jerez and Godello, half from Corullón and the other half from other villages. The grapes were partly destemmed and fermented in open-top stainless steel and oak vats with 25 days of maceration where the wine underwent a slow three-month malolactic. It matured in barrel for 12 months. This is the wine that showcases the house style and the character of the vintage, which, in this case, is delicate and very much from the zone. There is an aromatic purity and elegance that is very captivating with a faint flinty background, the cherry essence (Mediterranean) and a touch of fern (Atlantic) plus a honeyed twist that shows up after a couple of hours in the glass. It has a silky texture, soft and caressing, with very fine tannins and the faint bitter twist in the finish. In an ideal world, this should be the first wine people drink from Bierzo, and fortunately, in many cases, it is, given the availability, even if they did a more severe selection. This is approachable now but would be better in one year, and it’s going to live in bottle. 282,038 bottles and 2,500 magnums produced. It was bottled between December 2019 and January 2020.

  14. Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#30246

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
Vivid ruby. Spice- and smoke-accented red and dark berries and vanilla on the perfumed nose, along with a touch of incense. Intense bitter cherry and raspberry flavors are given lift and definition by an undertone of zesty minerality. Picks up a suave floral nuance on the persistent, smoke-tinged finish, which is framed by silky, slow-building tannins.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2020
Smoky, toasty and cocoa notes frame a core of ripe blackberry, currant, blood orange and licorice flavors in this fruit-centered red. Well-integrated tannins and orange peel acidity keep this focused. Drink now through 2029. 32,000 cases made, 18,000 cases imported.
    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
The 2017 Tres Picos Garnacha has the disadvantage of a warmer and riper year and also from having lost the exuberance of the 2018 I tasted next to it. It’s less aromatic, and even if the élevage was slightly shortened, the palate seems to have suffered more from the effect of the new oak, which to me doesn’t really match the character of the floral and aromatic Garnacha. For fans of oaky, powerful reds. 175,000 bottles produced.

Brilliant violet. Aromas of candied red and dark berries, incense and smoky minerals are complemented by a building floral nuance. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering lively boysenberry, cherry and spicecake flavors and a hint of candied lavender. Finishes sweet and youthfully tannic, displaying strong, spice- and mineral-driven persistence. Fermented in small stainless steel tanks and aged in small used French oak barrels.
