    JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, August 2, 2018
Very ripe and slightly raw oak over black fruit and coconut candy. The palate has dense, chewy fruit and really assertive tannins. Needs a year or two to settle in.

  6. Viña Zorzal Garnacha

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#42170

    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
The entry-level red simply called 2019 Garnacha is what they define as their regional bottling, using grapes from the villages of de Corella, Cintruénigo and Fitero, produced in an approachable and easy-to-understand way. It had a gentle vinification, starting with grapes of moderate ripeness with a good pH, fermented with indigenous yeasts and using 20% full clusters. The difference in vintage is noticeable when tasted with a majority of 2018s; this is a clearly riper and more open vintage, with a more Mediterranean character, with sweet fruit and aromatic herbs. It reminds me of some of my favorite old-time unoaked Garnachas from Navarra. It has a serious palate, with freshness and chalky tannins and a serious finish. Great value! 110,000 bottles produced. It was bottled unoaked in February 2020.

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#28412

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
A rich, fruity red with plum, light chocolate and vanilla character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/20
This wine’s fresh anise scent has the underlying earthiness of tripe, and it would be pretty delicious with a bowl of tripe braised in red wine. It offers the kind of richness without weight that allows the fragrant peppery and cherry-skin flavors to last through the dark, earthy tannins, a little bitter, a little oaky, but cool in the end.

  9. Palacios Remondo Finca La Montesa

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#37734

    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The quality/price champion 2018 La Montesa is now 100% Garnacha from organically farmed vineyards from the 100-hectare family property that gives the wine its name. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats and matured in barriques, 85% of them produced with French oak and the rest with American oak. It feels very young, and the oak is still present; and the American oak, which is spicy and smoky, with ashy incense and vanilla with some sweet undertones, gives it a character that brings back the character of the traditional wines from yesteryear in a very clean way. It has vibrant freshness and should develop nicely with a couple of years in bottle. It has great purity and typicity, less Mediterranean than the 2017, nicely textured, velvety. I think the breakthrough vintage for this wine was 2015. This has all the grapes that would have been used for the Propiedad label, which was not bottled separately in 2018. It carries the EU organic-farming label. It’s quite impressive for the quantity they produce — 700,000 bottles. They started bottling in April 2020 from a single master blend. I tasted one of the first bottles.

  12. Juan Gil Silver Label Monastrell

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#41687

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Sep 2020
I also tasted the following vintage, the 2018 Juan Gil (silver label), from a cooler and rainier, more continental vintage than the 2017 I tasted next to it. The origin is the same, Monastrell from their own old, non-irrigated vines fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels for around 12 months. This is the first vintage that is certified organic. There were some challenges, but they resulted in a fresh and balanced wine with integrated oak and a juicy and round palate. They have introduced optical sorting of the grapes, and perhaps that’s why there is more precision and purity. They cannot do manual sorting at this price point, but optical sorting seems like a good alternative. 2018 is a more difficult vintage than the 2017, yet this wine is better, juicier and seems to absorb the oak better, with just a smoky touch that reminded me somehow of a Northern Rhône. Really impressive. 312,000 bottles. It was bottled in June 2020.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021
Inky ruby. Fresh black and blue fruit aromas are sharpened by a smoky mineral nuance and a flourish of pungent flowers. Sappy and seamless in texture, offering juicy, spice-laced cherry and boysenberry flavors supported by a smoky mineral undertone. Finishes silky, precise and very long, with lingering florality and well-knit tannins.

  14. Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#33180

    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2022
Even though the 2020 is already hitting the shelves, I also tasted the 2019 Pétalos, a very balanced vintage that shows moderate alcohol and great balance. It is very approachable right now, open aromatically, and despite what the parameters might read, the wine comes through as fresher than the 2020. This is a wine produced with around 80% purchased grapes and 20% grapes from their own vineyards. There are notes of berries but also plenty of herbs; it’s aromatic and complex, with very fine tannins. It’s a classical continental vintage from Bierzo. 313,000 bottles and 1,000 magnums produced.
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, October 14, 2021
