E. Guigal Crozes-Hermitage

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 35661

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
Dark violet color. Pungent cherry and blackberry on the fragrant nose, along with hints of black pepper, olive and baking spices. Appealingly sweet and pliant in texture, offering energetic red and dark berry, star anise and candied violet flavors that are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Smooth tannins frame a long, spicy finish that strongly echoes the dark berry note. (Josh Raynolds)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022
The 2019 Crozes-Hermitage is a spicy, complex, incredibly satisfying Crozes with textbook darker berry fruits as well as notes of peppery herbs, violets, and loamy earth. The tannins are nicely integrated and perfectly ripe, and it’s going to evolve gracefully for a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022
The only one of the 2019 reds to have been bottled at the time of my visit, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage is a super effort, and it should represent a terrific value (the 2018 sells for about $30). Hints of violets accent blueberries and cassis on the nose in this full-bodied, concentrated offering. Rich, velvety and a bit tannic, it’s an impressive négoce bottling. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2022
A perfumed style, with silky-edged red currant and Damson notes flecked with sandalwood, white pepper and sanguine hints that then linger prettily on the dusty finish. Drink now through 2025. 2,500 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Stolpman Vineyards Estate Grown Syrah

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 24781

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2020
The 2018 Syrah Estate is a fabulous example of both the estate and everything Ballard Canyon is about. Fabulously deep and expansive, the Estate captures tremendous character. The flavors are dark, brooding and so rich. Black cherry, plum, leather, spice and dried herbs abound. The 50% whole clusters are nicely integrated, but the tannins are equally imposing, so a measure of patience is critical. All of the other Syrahs in this range are compelling, but to me the Estate is the most complete. It’s a reference-point wine for the appellation.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2020
Clean aromas of boysenberry, wet stone and sifted ash show on the lively nose of this bottling. The palate is intensely grippy with earthy tension, combining freshly smashed berry flavors with aromatic rosewater flavors and just a hint of game.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
Medium ruby purple, the 2018 Syrah Estate opens with bright, fresh blackcurrants, aniseed, tar and laurel on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with lifted, juicy, floral-laced fruits and finishes long and uplifted. 3,900 cases produced.
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 4, 2020
Blended with 2% Viognier, the 2018 Syrah Estate Grown reveals a saturated purple color as well as a lively bouquet of spiced red and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, and a touch of cedary herbs. Medium-bodied, fresh, and focused, it’s a classy Syrah to drink over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Marietta Gibson Block

Estate Grown McDowell Valley Syrah
2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 54953

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021
The 2018 Gibson Block Syrah comes from very old vines interplanted with other varieties like Grenache, Trousseau Noir and Mission. They are dry-farmed, picked together and co-fermented. It has a deep ruby-purple color and deep, layered aromas of tar, earth, blackcurrant liqueur, cast iron and dried violets. The full-bodied palate bursts with juicy acidity, sparks of Luxardo cherry and a silky, rounded mouthfeel. It finishes very long and perfumed.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Syrah Estate Gibson Block is positively stellar. These old, dry-farmed vines yield a Syrah that is intensely bold and savory. Dark blue/black fruit, tobacco, cedar, licorice, tobacco and dried flowers open with a bit of coaxing. Readers will find a heady, tannic Syrah built for aging. Time in the glass brings out notable finesse, but I would be in no rush here.

Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz

2021 / 750 ml.

Item #: 28575

WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2024
This inky-hued Shiraz is dense, ripe and powerful with quite a bit of oak on display. Chocolate and dusting polish perch atop the concentrated dark fruit and pepper spice on the nose. The palate is rich and luscious, framed in muscular tannins that support, rather than overpower. Classic Penfolds, this drinks well now with protein but could cellar for several more years. (Christina Pickard)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, July 23, 2023
The type of full-weighted Australian shiraz that many expect. While it could be argued that that the style is a bit fusty, what cannot be denied is the moreish feel. Iodine, clove and boysenberry billow toward a nourishing and forceful finish and the reality is that this cuvee, as with so many in the stable, is reliable and delicious. Sure, the oak is a bit fuzzy, but there is plenty to like. Drink or hold. (Ned Goodwin MW)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jul 2023
The 2021 Bin 28 Shiraz hails from five regions: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley. The wine matured for 12 months in American oak (7% new), and this really amplifies the sweet fruit characters in the mouth. It’s already nicely integrated aromatically, despite being poured and opened in the same instance (i.e., no preparation prior to tasting), and is redolent with red and purple berry fruit. Spicy, full throttle and loads of tannin in the mouth. Nicely chewy. The first vintage of this wine was in 1959. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. (Erin Larkin)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2023
The 2021 Shiraz Bin 28 is a little shy before building and offering broad blackberry, blackcurrant, blackberry and chocolate aromas with sweet oak in support. Supple and fleshy fruited in style with well-weighted tannins, it’s a nicely pitched South Australian Shiraz with good upfront generosity, which it will continue to hold over the short to medium term. Mouthfilling, with a delicious gush of warmed blackberry and boysenberry compote flavors backed by licorice, bramble and sweet tapenade notes, which contrast with the fruit nicely. Features a nice buried iron spine on the finish. Best from 2024 through 2038. 500 cases made, 25 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD93+93–95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/5/2021
The 2019 Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes offers slightly more dark fruit and minerality as well as a more concentrated yet backward style on the palate. Full-bodied and structured, with terrific purity, it’s going to require more bottle age than the base and, but it should have two-plus decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Deep ruby. Spice-accented aromas of blackcurrant, kirsh and olive paste aromas, along with a mineral top note. Sappy, sweet and expansive on the palate, offering juicy red and blue fruit preserves, cracked pepper and a violet pastille nuance. Dusty tannins give shape to the persistent finish, which leaves behind sappy floral and spice notes. (Josh Raynolds)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
One of the few 2019s to be marked by cracked pepper aromas, the cherry-scented 2019 Saint Joseph les Salamandres is only medium-bodied, but it is concentrated and supple, with a long, silky finish. Drink it over the next 5 years or so. (Joe Czerwinski)

JS92+92–93 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 7, 2022
A charismatic Crozes-Hermitage with tons of black-plum fruit, as well as hot-asphalt and cocoa-powder notes. This is remarkably open for its young age, in spite of the ample structure. Has a bold and tightly knit tannin structure, but should be drinkable from release, thanks to the forthright fruit that is very present at the long, moderately dry finish. From biodynamically grown grapes.
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
Shimmering ruby. Expressive, spice-accented red and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of olive, espresso and candied flowers. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering gently sweet cherry and cassis flavors that deepen through the back half. Finishes very long, spicy and smooth, with even tannins lending final grip. Ramey Sonoma Coast Syrah

Item #: 39399

WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2022
This is a compelling coastal varietal wine, inviting on the nose in forest pine, white pepper and subtle red fruit. Cofermented with 14% Viognier, the grapes were grown at Cole Creek and Rodgers Creek vineyards. The silky, supple texture shows the potential to age. Enjoy best from 2029–2039. (Virginie Boone)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Jun 2023
Co-fermented with 13% Viognier, the 2019 Syrah Sonoma Coast has intense aromas of red and black currants, game meats, green olive and coffee beans plus a waft of eucalyptus. The medium-bodied palate is approachable and nuanced with grainy tannins and seamless freshness as it moves through the mouth, and it has a long, juicy finish. It’s very easy to drink and will pair widely at the table. (Erin Brooks)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2023
A handsome red, showing a refined pedigree and elegant red currant and raspberry flavors highlighted by savory pepper and a whiff of garrigue. Finishes with fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030. 900 cases made. (Tim Fish)
