The Hess Collection Lion Tamer

Napa Valley Red Wine
2015 / 750 ml.

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 15, 2018
Smooth and harmonious, with supple cherry, dark berry, cedar, gravel and floral notes that glide across the palate gracefully, ending long and pure. Malbec, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2028. 4,547 cases made. (James Laube)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017
Composed of 50% Malbec, 23% Zinfandel and 11% Petite Sirah with smaller parts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Mourvèdre, the 2015 Proprietary Red The Lion Tamer is scented of warm blackcurrants, preserved plums and dark chocolate with touches of pencil shavings, dried Provence herbs and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with ripe black fruit and plush tannins, finishing long and lively. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2018
The 2015 Lion Tamer shows just how compelling Malbec can be on Mt. Veeder. Succulent, resonant and super-expressive, the 2015 has so much to recommend it. A rush of dark cherry, plum, smoke, new leather, licorice and spice builds in this striking, extroverted wine from Hess.

JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
The appellation 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is another winner. Ripe red and black fruits, dried flowers, and spice all define the bouquet, and it’s up-front, soft, balanced, and just delicious. Drink bottles over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
Leads with a light cedar edge, followed quickly by relatively open-knit red currant and damson plum fruit flavors. Shows a light savory edge on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 41,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
The winery’s largest bottling, approximately 38,000 cases, is the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. Primarily from the Hardester Ranch in Pope Valley, with other major contributions from St. Helena, Soda Canyon and Glass Mountain, it’s a medium to full-bodied effort, with bold flavors of cherries, cassis and cedar. It’s easy, but not soft, nicely firm, with a long, silky-textured finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 4, 2022
Lovely aromas of toasted herbs, baked plums, nutmeg and chicory root. Full-bodied with tight tannins. Juicy and succulent red and black fruit on the palate, accented by notes of hot paprika, rosemary and allspice. Complex, but remains approachable. 86% petite sirah, 6% syrah, 5% grenache and 3% mixed Rhone varieties. Best after 2025. (James Suckling)
JD92+92+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
Lots of ripe blue fruits, violets, flowers, and mineral-laced nuances all emerge from the 2019 Petite Sirah, a medium to full-bodied, inky, yet surprisingly vibrant and lively wine. It has fine tannins, and I love its overall balance. It’s going to have 10–15 years of longevity if well stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022
A bruiser, with concentrated blueberry, smoky meat and cracked pepper flavors that gather tension and tannins on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2030. 35,611 cases made. (Tim Fish)
