The Hess Collection Lion Tamer

Napa Valley Red Wine
2014 / 750 ml.

Item #: 44084

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
Another fascinating wine that symbolizes the new level of quality as well as innovation and creativeness at Hess Collection is the 2014 Proprietary Red The Lion Tamer, a red blend, which is 55% Malbec, 15% Zinfandel, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah and 8% Merlot. It comes from vineyards throughout Napa and is a delicious, Mediterranean style of wine, with notes of forest floor, underbrush, lavender, loads of black cherry and blackcurrant, a nice, spicy meatiness and a medium to full-bodied finish. Drink it over the next 5–6 years
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2017
A new offering from this producer, this wine blends 55% Malbec with 15% Zinfandel, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah and 8% Merlot. It satisfies in rich, rounded flavors of blueberry pie, cranberry and clove, with an underlying streak of dark chocolate. Medium acidity supports an appealing full-bodied juiciness.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2017
Wins points for finesse and polish, with a sleek, supple mix of savory berry, roasted herb and cedary oak notes, and ending with woody, gripping tannins. Needs time. Malbec, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Merlot. Drink now through 2027. 2,729 cases made.

Freemark Abbey Chardonnay

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 32166

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 6, 2021
Beautiful, dense Chardonnay with phenolic tension and layers of fruit. Full-bodied with lots of complexity, pretty intensity and tightness at the end. Dried pineapple and hints of tropical fruit and praline. Made from Howell Mountain, Carneros and Napa City. Drink or hold.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2019 Chardonnay is a very pretty wine. Apricot, tangerine peel, white flowers, mint and a touch of new oak are all finely knit in this attractive, mid-weight Chardonnay from vineyards in Carneros, southern Napa Valley and Howell Mountain. Partially blocked malolactic fermentation keeps the flavors vibrant in this attractive, appealing Chardonnay from Freemark Abbey.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
The 2019 Chardonnay underwent 50% malolactic and spent nine months in oak barrels, 40% new. It opens with expressive poached pears and apple pie scents plus nuances of powdered ginger, honey toast and mandarin peel. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating spiced-apple flavors with a racy line and great length. 4,400 cases were made.

Truchard Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 52616

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021
This shows balance, freshness and depth. An array of fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and complexity on the palate. Ripe dark and blue fruit combines with spiced oak, vanilla and cedar. It’s juicy and smooth now, yet has lots of potential. Drink or hold.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
A friendly version, with a polished core of cherry and raspberry fruit flavors laced with hints of black tea and tobacco. Ends with a dash of cedar and sanguine on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 6,113 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Truchard’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is gently herbal, with hints of thyme to go along with black olives and black cherries. It’s medium to full-bodied, silky, streamlined and direct, with more of a straight-line personality than an expansive one, but it would go nicely with a rare steak off the grill. And it’s a notable value, as delicious Napa Cabs under $50 have become an endangered species. (Joe Czerwinski)

Charles Krug Family Reserve Generations

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 47392

RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Proprietary Red Blend Family Reserve Generations is intensely scented of warm black and red currants, Black Forest cake and blueberry compote with nuances of chocolate mint, new leather, tilled soil and fallen leaves. Full-bodied with a taut frame of grainy tannins supporting the densely packed black fruit layers, it has a long lingering minty kick on the finish.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
Features a solid range blackberry paste, fig and plum notes, with cassis bush, bittersweet cocoa and licorice root accents. The solidly grippy finish leaves a hefty impression, but this will have fans. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2021 through 2029. 2,400 cases made.

JD92+92+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
All three of the 2016s I was able to taste showed beautifully. Starting with the 2016 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, brought up in 50% new oak. This is classic Cabernet all the way and offers lots of cassis, green tobacco, cedar, and dark chocolate. These carry to a medium to full-bodied 2016 that has ripe, present tannins, good purity, and an old school, complex, textbook Cabernet character. Give it 3–4 years and enjoy over the following two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
This packs in some serious plum compote and cassis flavors, liberally wrapped in dark licorice and finishing with a swath of sweet toast and tobacco on the broad finish. Nice mineral underpinning keeps it honest. Fairly accessible despite its heft. Drink now through 2034. 55,000 cases made.

Stags’ Leap Napa Valley Petite Sirah

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 23406

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, March 3, 2022
Lots of ripe plums and blueberries, together with smoked meat, licorice and dried flowers. Dark chocolate and wet forest floor, too. Tight and meaty with a dense, chewy tannin structure. Full-bodied, ripe and fruit-driven. Long, savory finish. Try now, but better after a year or two.
RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
Sourced from Calistoga all the way down to Coombsville, the 2018 Petite Sirah is inky purple-black in color. Vanilla notes—it spends 14 months in 25% new American oak—accent blackberries and blueberries on the nose, while it’s full-bodied on the palate, where it’s a bit chunky but not unfriendly, with a long, dusty finish.
