Sensational Sangiovese

Sensational Sangiovese | WineTransit.com

When you think of Italian red wine, chances are you think of Sangiovese. It's the primary grape in Chianti as well as the stellar Brunello de Montalcino wines, and can also be blended with Cabernet to create "Super Tuscan" wines. Here are some of our favorite Italian Sangioveses!

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#41686

    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2021
A mix of fruity and savory, this red reveals as much eucalyptus, bay leaf, thyme and tobacco as black cherry, blackberry and licorice. Concentrated and solidly built, lingering with an aftertaste of dark fruit and Mediterranean herbs, plus iron and tobacco. Best from 2023 through 2042. 15,000 cases made, 7,800 cases imported.

  5. Poggio Il Castellare Rosso di Montalcino

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#57747

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino impresses with a soothing mix of spiced herbal teas, crushed strawberries, balsam herbs and hints of smoke. Its round and silky textures wash ripe red berries and sweet spices across the senses, with contrasting hints of sour citrus and a building minerality toward the close. While a bit short, this is fresh, leaving nuances of tart black currant and licorice to linger. Tasting the 2019 Rosso from Poggio Il Castellare has me excited to taste the Brunello annata in years to come. (Eric Guido)

Ripe berries, sweet tobacco and a hint of walnut oil on the nose, following through to a medium-bodied palate with fruit and spice-coated tannins that give a fresh, almost tangy finish. Bright and tasty now, but may settle into something even better. Try from 2023.

  6. Sassetti Livio Pertimali Montecucco Rosso

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#44855

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
There’s something dark, animalistic and wild about the 2018 Rosso Montecucco. It’s an intense and energetic expression, yet powerful, showing crushed blackberries and wild herbs spiked with a twang of sour citrus. The textures are silky and pliant with masses of ripe fruits and wild berries offset by penetrating minerals and brisk acids. This tapers off long and lightly structured. A total success for the vintage.

  7. Siro Pacenti Pelagrilli Brunello di Montalcino

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#58159

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021
Beautiful aromas of cherries, plums and fresh flowers with some oranges follow through to a full body with round and chewy tannins that are polished and refined for the hot 2017 vintage. Flavorful and fresh finish. Remains in check and toned. Drink in 2023 and onwards.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022
The Siro Pacenti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli is a robust and powerful expression with dark fruit nuances that transition to a dense core and a tightly woven inner fabric with more enriched black fruit and spice. Pelagrilli has a beautifully soft and open-knit character, and the tannins are well managed to show no rough edges or bitterness. What stands out best in this wine is the sheer density. Built like a tank, it will embrace long cellar aging. 25,000 bottles were produced. (Monica Larner)
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022
This is taut and chewy, with beefy tannins putting a strong grip on the black cherry, plum, earth and spice flavors. Feels more fruity than savory, ending with assertive tannins. Best from 2025 through 2042. 2,000 cases made, 750 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
