Super Tuscans

Super Tuscans | WineTransit.com

The term "Super Tuscan" is used to describe wines from Tuscany that were augmented, or even entirely made from non-indigenous Italian grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and even Syrah and Cabernet Franc became stars in the warmth of Tuscan vineyards.

The other thing "super" about our featured wines is the quality in a category where wines can easily command three-figure price-points. These you will find much more wallet-friendly. As the weather turns cooler these wines will ideally pair with roasts, steaks, hearty bolognese and "Sunday sauce."

Muralia Manolibera

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 47570

VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Manolibera is laced with crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint, sweet pipe tobacco and orange peel. This effusive mid-weight red is a real charmer. I especially like the feeling of transparency here. (Antonio Galloni)

JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, July 28, 2020
A fresh, vivid red with cherries, currants and hints of hazelnuts and chocolate. Medium body. Racy finish. Like the vivid acidity that runs through this. Drink or hold.
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2021
A blend of Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Syrah, this has aromas of black-skinned berry, Mediterranean brush and a whiff of orange zest. The bright palate offers raspberry, cinnamon and white pepper alongside polished tannins and fresh acidity. Drink through 2025.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2021
An open, light-bodied red, this emphasizes black cherry, blackberry and thyme flavors. Soft tannins and the right level of acidity makes it very drinkable now. Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Drink now. 13,333 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

Trinoro Le Cupole

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 44013

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2020 Le Cupole is a rich, flavorful wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, espresso, incense and chocolate are front and center. There’s not much subtlety here, but then again I am not sure that is the goal, either. This flamboyant red will be a joy to drink right out of the gate. (Antonio Galloni)

SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
Well-defined black cherry and blackberry flavors are shaded by notes of rosemary, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco in this firm and complex red, which shows lovely balance and grip on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 8,000 cases imported.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2018 Legit is a bold, punchy wine that marries varietal aromas and flavors with Castelnuovo Berardenga richness. It’s a combination that works quite well. Blue/black fruit, gravel, spice, dried herbs, lavender and chocolate are front and center in this juicy, open-knit Cabernet Sauvignon. (Antonio Galloni)

Tolaini Al Passo

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 54934

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Al Passo is rich, ample and generous. Healthy dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon turbocharge Sangiovese, adding depth and structure. Red-fleshed Sangiovese fruit emerges over time. The 2019 is deep and quite fleshy, but it also has a good deal of brightness to balance some of its more overt leanings. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2022
An expressive, fruity style, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum, floral and wild herb aromas and flavors. Dense and lively, with a lingering aftertaste of red fruit and herbs. A floral and bright red with brambleberry character. Cedar, too. Medium body with very fine tannins that are polished and beautiful. Long and refined. So delicious. A complete and balanced Tuscan red. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, sangiovese, syrah and petit verdot. Drink now.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Villa Antinori is plump, juicy and super-expressive. Black cherry, plum, mocha, new leather, licorice and spice are all dialed up in this delicious, succulent red from Antinori. The Villa Antinori is a blend taken from the Antinori family’s many properties across Tuscany. (Antonio Galloni)

Tenuta Degli Dei Cavalli

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59505

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, July 14, 2021
Here is a red with a solid palate of red berries, crushed stone and fresh flowers. Full-bodied with beautifully crafted tannins that are soft and relaxed. The fruit character is complex with some fresh mushrooms and rose petals to the dark fruit. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will be much better in two or three years. Drink after 2022. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2021
The Tenuta degli Dei 2017 Cavalli sees a base of Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and is a terrific dinner wine. It is polished and deep with some of the fruit nuances you can expect of this vintage. However, the overall effect is balanced and smooth with plenty of fruity power, weight and length. Production is about 16,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

A melange of sweet, ripe berries on the nose, including brambleberries, mushy strawberries and elderberries. Some fern-like notes, too. Medium-to full-bodied with brighter fruit and some lightly firm tannin. Turns to salted caramel on the finish. Sangiovese, ciliegiolo, vermentino nero and barsaglina. From organically grown grapes. A little odd, in quite a rustic style, but attractive enough. Drink now. (James Suckling)
