Tardieu-Laurent: Great Rhones

Tardieu-Laurent: Great Rhones | WineTransit.com

Tardieu-Laurent in the wine trade is what we call a "négociant." Instead of owning vineyards, they select and buy wines from growers in many regions of France. In this case the wines are from the Northern Rhone (Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage) and the Southern Rhone (Cotes-du-Rhone and Chateauneuf-du-Pape). Their very high standards have led to critical acclaim at every price-point.

  1. Tardieu-Laurent Rasteau Vieilles Vignes

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#29106

    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
Plumes of red raspberry and plum announce this juicy, luminous blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre sourced from limestone and clay soils. It’s intensely fruity but nuanced by shades of charred wood, earth and bramble, too. Soft tannins welcome drinking young, but it’s a concentrated, foursquare sip that should evolve well through 2030.
    JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2019
Also deeply colored, the 2018 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes has rocking purity and freshness as well as tons of black cherry, blackberries, scorched earth, graphite, and peppery garigue aromas and flavors. It’s rich, concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and just another beautiful wine. The blend is 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that was two-thirds destemmed and will spend 10 months in once- and twice-used oak followed by 10 months in foudre.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
The 2018 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, aged 10 months in once-used barrels, then eight months in foudres. For a Rasteau, this is remarkably fresh and vibrant, with red raspberries and spicy licorice notes on the nose and palate. It’s medium to full-bodied, open-knit and accessible, with hints of mocha and soft, dusty tannins on the finish.

  2. Tardieu-Laurent Les Becs Fins

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#54520

    JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020
A similar deep purple/red, the 2019 Cotes Du Rhone Les Becs Fins is another expressive, complex, outstanding wine from this estate. Black raspberries, saddle leather, peppery garrigue, and sandalwood emerge from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, balanced 2019 that has silky tannins and loads of character. It too is ideal for enjoying over the coming 5–6 years.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2021
Solid, this red has a fleshy, juicy feel, with anise-laced plum and blackberry pâte de fruit notes, backed by a graphite edge on the lightly toasted finish. Drink now through 2024. 5,000 cases made, 200 cases imported.

  3. Tardieu-Laurent Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#57259

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2022
Dark and a bit reticent still, showing a very deep well of dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry puree flavors scored by roasted apple wood and licorice root notes. Features serious drive on the finish, with a tannic spine that easily shoulders the load of fruit, while a subtle mineral note peeks through. This is built for the cellar. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2038. 500 cases made, 50 cases imported.
    JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Spéciale is similarly deep purple hued and has a ripe, sexy style that’s very much in the vintage. Loads of black raspberries, Asian spices, candied flowers, and peppery garrigue give way to a full-bodied, concentrated, powerful wine with terrific balance, plenty of ripe and polished tannins, and a great finish. It’s a ripe, opulent wine that stays graceful and beautifully balanced. My money is on it benefiting from 4–5 years of bottle age, and it should have two decades of longevity.

Another killer wine, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes reveals a dense purple color to go with loads of red and blue fruits, bacon fat, cured meat, and spring flowers. Offering classic Saint-Joseph minerality, medium to full-bodied richness, and plenty of both acidity and tannins, it’s going to shine for 15 years or more.

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#57267

    JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/8/2021
An up-front, pretty version of this cuvée that leads with its fruit, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes Blanc offers lots of honeyed pineapple, white flowers, quince, and subtle toasty notes to go with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It shows some classic bitter almond and minerality with time in the glass and has a great texture, good overall freshness, and a great finish.

Also pure Southern Rhône goodness, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes has classy notes of red and blue fruits, candied orange, flowers, peppery garrigue, and loads of Asian spices. Beautifully textured, silky, and elegant on the palate, it has wonderful tannins, a notable sense of freshness, and a great, great finish.

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2021
Packed with dark fig, boysenberry and blackberry fruit, this pumps along with ample depth and drive, picking up licorice snap, roasted applewood and dark tea notes along the way. Nice energy through the finish too, thanks to an underlying iron note. Drink now through 2030. 1,000 cases made, 150 cases imported.
