Critical Acclaim

RP95 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 30th Oct 2002

"This wine is nearly flawless. Fabulously perfumed as well as unctuously textured, it offers incredible notes of prunes, raisins, honey, molasses, roasted nuts, etc., etc. Australia continues to be a treasure trove for fortified, after-dinner wines. Once bottled, they do not change, and often age up to a decade where well stored. After opening, most will last for a week. This is one of the top wine discoveries of this year’s tastings. Many consumers are going to be overjoyed with this offering." (95 pts.)

SP91 Wine Spectator May 15, 2002

"Unctuously sweet, rich in texture and long, playing out its crème brûlée, orange peel and evanescent remnants of cherry fruit as the wine coats the mouth luxuriantly." (91 pts.)

ST90 Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar Sep/Oct 2005

"Green-tinged copper. Brown sugar, molasses, blond tobacco, toffee and brown butter on the nose. Rich and velvety, with round, creamy flavors of toffee, crème brûlée, mocha and lightly roasted coffee. Finishes rich and supple." (90 pts.)

WE90 Wine Enthusiast 12/15/2007

"Buller’s top wines are from Rutherglen, but this entry-level Tokay carries the broader Victoria GI. There’s a blast of bergamot upfront, the penetrating citrus notes layered over tea leaves and caramel flavors. Viscous and mouthcoating, it finishes long and citrusy-sweet." (90 pts.)

When casual wine drinkers think of Australian wine, they probably think of the critter-laden labels of Yellow Tail and The Little Penguin, among others. And while large wine companies dominate the Australian list, there are also a great number of smaller producers creating highly-rated, award-winning wines.

The majority of Australian wine is produced in South Australia, with most of that (those “critter wines”) carrying a South Eastern Australia appellation. Subregions such as Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale are home to smaller producers and higher quality wines. Victoria and New South Wales are also significant regions, and wines from Western Australia are reaching America in increasing numbers.

Though Shiraz is the grape most associated with Australia, they’ve also had great success with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and Grenache.
