Bedrock Evangelho Vineyard Heritage

2021 / 750 ml.

Item #: 58723

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2021 Evangelho Heritage Wine is dark, sensual and wonderfully expressive. Blue fruit, spice, lavender and leather all meld together in this beautifully layered Zinfandel-based field blend. The 2021 possesses unreal complexity and depth, with much of its intensity coming from punishingly low yields. The 2021 is simply fabulous. (Antonio Galloni)

Clos de Luz Massal 1945 Carménère

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 60292

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2020 Carménère Massal 1945 from Almahue, Cachapoal, was made in used barrels and foudres for 12 months. Garnet red to the eye, the nose offers notes of pyrazine and mint with hints of sour cherry and ripe plum. In the mouth, it’s tense and juicy with a vibrant expression and a fruity, faintly herbal backdrop. A delicate take on the style. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Apr 2023
The effect of the warm and dry year was evident in the 2020 Massal 1945 Carménère, especially when tasted next to the wine from the cooler 2021. This is creamy and has a roundness in the palate. It has 14.1% alcohol, mellow acidity and abundant, fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
A perfumed nose of plums, mulberries, mushrooms, caramel, sweet tobacco and sweet spices. Full-bodied with velvety, fine tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and supple with a creamy texture. Delicate and precise with a long, polished finish. 90% tempranillo and 10% graciano. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
They used the words subtlety, elegance, finesse, delicacy and silk to define the 2015 Gran Reserva 904 Selección Especial, a blend of 90% Tempranillo from their vineyards in Villalba, Briñas and Rodezno with 10% Graciano from the Montecillo vineyard in Fuenmayor that was picked 23 days later than the Tempranillo. The grapes were sorted optically for the first time, and they fermented in stainless steel where the wine went through malolactic too. The wine was put in barrel in January 2016—used American oak barrels built by their own coopers—where it matured for four years, during which time it was racked every six months. 2015 was a healthy vintage with balanced ripeness that delivered wines with good aging potential. They thought the wine needed a little more time in bottle to polish those tannins and have decided to hold it and release the wine around March 2023; it will be marked Selección Especial, the first 904 to do so, as they have very high hopes for this year and believe it’s one of the finest vintages. They think it will develop the sophistication in the palate with a little more time and that is should achieve the silkiness that is the signature of 904. This is very 2015; I saw quite strong tannins in all the 2015 wines I tasted from Rioja Alta. There are some 150,000 bottles of this. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Vivid ruby. Expansive red and blue fruit preserve, tobacco, potpourri, spice and botanical herb aromas, with vanilla and smoky mineral notes emerging as the wine opens up. Sappy, penetrating and gently chewy on the palate, offering vibrant, mineral- and spice-accented black raspberry, bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. Shows sharp focus and floral lift on the impressively long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind notes of candied blue fruits and spicecake. (Josh Raynolds)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2021
This elegant, sanguine red offers supple layers of dried cherry, sandalwood, vanilla and Kalamata olive, supported by smooth tannins. Hints of leather, tobacco, mineral and anise echo on the finish. A balanced, traditional style red. Drink now through 2031. 12,500 cases made, 3,200 cases imported. (Gillian Sciaretta)

Ulysses

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 60198

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a very pretty Oakville Cabernet. Bright acids and lifted aromatics meld into a core of dark red-fleshed fruit laced with attractive exotic overtones. A wine of linear intensity, the 2019 impresses with its persistence and overall drive. It will be interesting to see if the 2019 develops a bit more mid-palate richness and overall depth. I suspect the heavy rains and two heat spikes in late summer had some effect in a site, which was entirely replanted in 2008. (Antonio Galloni)

Jaume Serra Cristalino Brut

NV / 750 ml.

Item #: 66498

WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - August 1, 2013
A perennial favorite, this offers clean apple flavors at an unusually affordable price for such a completely dry style. It is a great party pour, or an aperitif to sip with raw clams.
SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2011
There’s a savory edge to the apple pastry, ginger and almond cream flavors in this well-cut and focused cava. The mouthwatering finish is tinged with smoke and nut notes. Drink now through 2015. 300,000 cases made.
ST8787 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2010
Light, bright gold with a slow, fine bead. Pungent aromas of dried flowers, smoky herbs, orange peel and apple. Very complex for the price, offering round orchard and pit fruit flavors and bracingly bitter citrus pith. Finishes on a gently sweet note, with repeating notes of flowers and orange. This can be had for as little as $7 in some markets, which must make it the best sparkling wine value around.
WE8585 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2011
A little cidery and funky smelling at first, but it settles to show stalky notes, scallion, tarragon and citrus flavors. Layered in feel but a bit green tasting throughout.
WE8585 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2005
Light aromas of petrol and lemon-lime are entirely correct for cava, and the palate pushes fresh fruit in the tangerine and grapefruit realm. Has a bit of heft and zap, with a dry, largely clean finish. Fine on its own; maybe better in a Spanish-style mimosa.

Louis Jadot Pouilly-Fuissé

2022 / 750 ml.

Item #: 64808

VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé has a well-defined and focused bouquet. It’s mineral-driven, with subtle earthy scents filtering through the citrus fruit with time. The palate is well balanced with good depth, well-judged acidity, plenty of tangy orange zest and freshly-sliced pear towards the harmonious finish. This is a solid Pouilly-Fuissé rather than a memorable one. It does the job without the frills. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting. (Neal Martin)

Château Tour des Termes Saint-Estèphe

Item #: 60213

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, March 3, 2021
An elegant nose of dark fruit, wood, orange peel, dark chocolate and some herbs. It’s full-bodied with elegant tannins. Juicy and well balanced with a flavorful finish. Lovely length. Try after 2023.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Alluring, with a hint of black tea that gives way quickly to dark plum and cherry preserve flavors lined with charcoal, tobacco and sweet bay leaf nuances. Puts on weight as it sits in the glass too, which always bodes well. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2031. 7,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021
The 2018 Tour de Termes is bold, inky and super-expressive. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice and menthol all meld together in this decidedly juicy Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois. Tour des Termes is not terribly complex, but it more than makes up for that with its open-knit personality and sheer allure. The 2018 has come together beautifully over the last two years. Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59895

JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, December 28, 2022
Impressive aromas of fresh herbs from the Tuscan coast, such as sage, mint, rosemary and thyme. Blackcurrants, too. Full-bodied with fine, chewy tannins that show beautiful length and consistency. Racy and beautiful, with lots of subtle and refined character. Slightly more cabernet sauvignon this year, which adds class to the wine. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% petit verdot. Give this about three or four years of bottle age. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)
VN96+96+ pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2020 Saffredi is compelling. Deep yet quite structured, 2020 is unlike any Saffredi I can recall tasting because of its balance of intense dark fruit and vertical structure. Plum, blackberry, pencil shavings, lavender and spice saturate the palate. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2020 is not as showy as most vintages at the same stage. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023
This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot is exuberant and explosive. The 2020 Saffredi reveals a very ripe and rich interpretation of this iconic wine made by Elisabetta Geppetti and her family. The blend of fruit is the same, but 2020 actually sees less oak intervention to allow that dark fruit to shine through. There is blackberry, perfumed rose, dried apricot, spice and sweet cinnamon. In all, the wine offers immediate fruit and a vertical delivery of flavors. Finding that combination of wine versus oak is not easy, Elisabetta tells me. (Monica Larner)
