Critical Acclaim

RP90 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 28th Jun 2015

"The 2013 Semi-Dry Riesling comes in at 21 grams per liter of residual sugar and 11% alcohol. Says winemaker Kelby Russell: “Red Newt’s ‘core’ Semi Dry Riesling [is] a house style that trends more dry than most others in the region.” Indeed, this has a burst of sugar here and there, but it is subdued and seems to be classic Mosel off-dry style, with attention to fine balancing acidity that makes it easily useable as a table wine. Call it a nice Kabinett. If anything, it is even better than the 2013 Dry Riesling, reviewed this issue, and ultimately might satisfy a lot of people looking (mostly) for dry. Beautifully done, it is fresh, lively and very tasty. It will be interesting to see how it ages, but it will hold well for several years if you must. In the meanwhile, note that it is another terrific value from Red Newt. There were 440 cases produced." (90 pts.)

VN89+ Vinous Jul 2018

"This Riesling from Red Newt is technically off-dry, but the sugar level is such that it affects the texture more than the flavor. The nose is quite flinty and reduced, with chatty aromas of white nectarine, hay, and lemon oil vying for attention. The palate is bright and peachy, with the kiss of sugar serving to soften and balance the bright, invigorating acidity. The finish has a subtle orange rind bitterness which is quite endearing. The only point of detraction for this wine is how dominant the reduction is; its powerful, flinty signature refuses to diminish with air and stands strong throughout the finish. 21 grams per liter residual sugar." WE88 Wine Enthusiast 5/1/2015

"Fresh green sage and tarragon notes lend an herbaceous freshness to this elegant off-dry Riesling. It’s dancingly delicate on the palate, but sunny yellow cherry and tangerine flavors are bright and concentrated." (88 pts.)

SP87 Wine Spectator Apr 30, 2015

"A friendly style, with an open-knit core of apple, fennel, ginger and quince notes that stays juicy through the finish. Drink now. 444 cases made." (87 pts.)

Finger Lakes

Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.

The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
