Critical Acclaim

JS100 Monday, December 1, 2014

"Complex aromas of walnut, dark fruit, stone, oyster shell, chalk and dried fruits. This shows fabulous intensity and balance with layer upon layer of fruit and polished tannins. Builds on the palate. It goes on for minutes. Better in 2019." (100 pts.)

SP95 Wine Spectator Jun 30, 2015

"This brooding version is lean and sinewy in profile, with dusty, chewy tannins gripping the cherry and strawberry fruit. This comes around with air, showing more sweetness and balance. Best from 2019 through 2033. 2,500 cases made." (95 pts.)

RP94 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 3rd Mar 2016

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is made from a selection of fruit from the estate’s older vines. The wine opens to a garnet-ruby color and savory aromas of cassis, dark cherry, smoked bacon and spice. It shows dense color and concentration with textured tannins and a generous mouthfeel. The wine’s personality delivers high intensity and rich constitution. This wine needs a few more years of bottle age to flesh out further." (94 pts.)

VN93+ Vinous Feb 2015

"Pacenti’s flagship 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is built on serious texture and resonance. Here, too, the flavors are dark and textured to the core. Dark red and back stone fruits, new leather and cedar gradually open up in the glass, but the 2010 needs time to fully come together, partly because the Vecchie Vigne sees a little more new oak than the Pelagrilli. Readers should note the Vecchie Vigne is the new name for what has long been Giancarlo Pacenti’s flagship Brunello. The 2010 is a blend of equal parts fruit from the north and south of Montalcino." (93+ pts.)

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.
