  5. Vie di Romans Dessimis Pinot Grigio

Beautiful rose-gold color with lots of ripe pear, golden apple, mango and pineapple on the nose. Hint of honey. It’s full-bodied and creamy on the palate with toasted almonds alongside tropical fruit. Smoky minerality, too. Drink or hold.

The Vie di Romans 2018 Friuli Isonzo Pinot Grigio Dessimis boasts a pale copper color with amber and peachy pink highlights. This vintage is not as wide or as texturally generous as the 2017 vintage also tasted in this report. However, the 2018 offers lifted, sharp fruit that is delineated and pure. Those subtle mineral nuances also appear with more clarity. There is tart berry, white cherry, wild mint and bitter almond. I also taste a mild tannic crunch. That structure comes from extended maceration on Pinot Grigio skins, as does the wine’s pretty color. It would be interesting to check in on its evolution in five year’s time. The wine ages on the lees for two months in French barrique.

The 2018 Pinot Grigio Dessimis is a pleasure to taste and also to look at with its beautiful orange, almost-amber color. Notes of dried apricot and peach take on a yellow citrus twang, with hints of almond paste adding an alluring richness. It’s textural and soothing on the senses without a hard edge in sight; instead coasting effortlessly across the palate with ripe orchard fruits, young mango and a hint of exotic spice. An inner sweetness lingers with an air of brown butter and hazelnut. The Dessimis is matured all in stainless steel and takes its color from spending ten months on the fine lees.

A ramato-style pinot grigio, this underwent 20 hours of cold maceration prior to fermentation, endowing the wine with a deep salmon hue and notes of mandarin orange, strawberry and peach tea. Nine months on the lees in French oak barrels added a creamy texture, taking the flavors in the direction of strawberry shortcake, though the wine stays cool and vibrant. Roasted suckling pig would make a good match for its rich fruit and spice.

  6. Vie di Romans Flors di Uis

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#47818

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Aug 2019
Slightly lower in price compared to this estate’s mono-variety wines, the 2016 Friuli Isonzo Flors di Uis is a blend of 45% Malvasia Istriana, 40% Riesling Renano and 15% Friulano. Production is 23,286 bottles. This unoaked white blend shows a razor-sharp delivery of primary fruit aromas, with zesty freshness and citrusy acidity on the close, followed by white jasmine and honey. The wine shows beautifully in the glass, with a radiant and brilliant appearance.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
Light-bodied and lithe, this balanced white shows exotic hints of lychee and kiwifruit, with melon, lime granita, wet stone and ground ginger flavors. Bright and mouthwatering on the lingering finish. Malvasia Istriana, Friulano and Rhein Riesling. Drink now through 2023. 1,941 cases made, 100 cases imported.

There’s quite a lot of candied-apple character on the nose, even though the dried florals are attractive and spicy. Medium to full body, bright acidity and a textured finish. Drink now.
