Mario Pena

Wine Education Coordinator and Wine Associate, Premium Wine & Spirits

Hailing from Texas, Mario came to Western New York after a few years in the south thanks to his wife, a Buffalo native. First learning about wine in fine dinning restaurants in New Orleans and Houston, Mario's journey began then and he has not lost his love for talking about wine and getting the right wine for every person he meets. You will often find Mario passionately spreading the word about the quality, generosity and value of Spanish wine whenever he is on the sales floor or in the classroom where he has led a successful Spanish Wine Series class program in his first year with the Premier Group.

This 30-acre estate offers an excellent wine that demonstrates the balance between the ripeness of Merlot and the more restrained nature of the Cabernets. Add in the barrel aging, and the wine has both structure and elegance. Drink from 2022.

Formerly known of Moulins-Listrac, Chateau La Diligente was recently purchased and renamed by François Rudloff and his wife Monique Cheong. Their 2015 is a classy effort that has lots of red currants and cherry fruit characteristics as well as ample background spice, hints of oak, and forest floor. With medium-bodied richness, beautiful purity of fruit, and impeccable balance, it’s a beautiful wine that’s going to benefit from 2–3 years of bottle age and drink nicely for a decade or more. More elegant and complex than powerful, this has real character and is worth seeking out.
