Critical Acclaim
SP96 Wine Spectator Jul 31, 2017
"Combines power and finesse, offering a firm, dense, chewy core of mocha-scented blackberry, cassis, crushed rock, loamy earth, cedar, cigar box and exotic spice, ending with firm, smoky tannins and a midpalate sweetness that adds a measure of intrigue and nuance. Drink now through 2030. 315 cases made." (96 pts.)
ST93+ Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar May/Jun 2014
"Dark red-ruby. Wild, highly nuanced nose throws off scents of raspberry, musky black olive, wild herbs, iron and dusty stone, all lifted by a floral topnote. Very ripe, dense and sweet, offering terrific depth and thickness without any heaviness. The fruits run more to red than black, with brown spices providing another aromatic element in the mouth. Finishes very long and sweet, with superb ripe, broad tannins. Outstanding potential." (93–95 pts.)
VN92+ Vinous Nov 2013
"Beautifully expressive and layered, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard is resonant and floral, with terrific density and power. This is another 2012 that remains primary and not fully expressive. Today, it is the wine’s silkiness that impresses above all else. It will be interesting to see where the 2012 goes over the coming year." (92–94 pts.)
RP95 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 30th Oct 2014
"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard comes from a 4-acre Oakville parcel situated below the Dalla Valle vineyards in the eastern Vaca foothills. It exhibits an opaque purple color along with a gorgeous nose of loamy soil minerality interwoven with blackberry and crème de cassis fruit. Full-bodied with terrific richness and opulence, this is a great example from the tenderloin sector of Napa Valley. It should drink well young, yet last for 20–25 years." (95 pts.)
CaliforniaWhen it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular). | United StatesThe United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States. |

- Chateau Haut-Bailly Pessac-Leognan 2016 / 750 ml.JS98+98–99 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 4, 2017
This young wine shows such pinpoint precision with a full body, dense fruit and gorgeous intensity. Muscular yet toned and beautiful. It really builds on the finish. Very fine-grained. So long and beautiful. Sophisticated power. Oyster shell and iodine undertones. Traditional style yet with a modern interpretation. Savory. RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2017
The 2016 Haut Bailly is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc picked between 26 September until 18 October. Coming in with 13.6% alcohol and an IPT of 81, which is quite close to 2010, this was quite closed at first and so I allowed my sample 15–20 minutes to open while discussing the vintage with Véronique Sanders and technical manager, Gabriel Vialard. It has a classic bouquet that is certainly less opulent and extravagant than recent vintages. This is more controlled and focused, beautifully delineated with blackberry, cedar and Earl Grey aromas that gently waft from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine-grain tannin, sappy with superb delineation and real weight and presence in the mouth. There is just the right amount of spice and salinity, the latter beckoning you back for another sip and there is a haunting pencil lead note that forms the closing credits on the aftertaste. What a brilliant Haut-Bailly, perhaps the best that I have tasted in almost 20 years of tasting at this estate. WE96+96–98 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2017
Firm tannins cannot mask the fact that this aromatic wine is gorgeous, rich and fruity. It has a powerful structure to sustain the black plum and berry flavors. It is an impressive and concentrated wine, ready for the long haul. VN94+94–97+ pts. - Vinous - Apr 2017
The 2016 Haut-Bailly is a huge, powerful wine that explodes in all directions. Black cherry, smoke, tobacco, licorice, menthol, incense and gravel are all pushed forward, but it is the wine’s volume and pure intensity that stand out most. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 is likely to be a slow-maturing wine, but even today the phenomenal finish is a marvel. The 2016 is a great Haut-Bailly in the making. It will reward several decades of cellaring.Compare at $169.99 $135.99 - Chateau Canon-La-Gaffeliere Saint-Emilion | Premier Grand Cru Classe 2015 / 750 ml.JS96+96–97 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, April 1, 2016
Very tight yet shows wonderful cream and lemon rind texture. Full and powerful with walnut and spice character. Linear and focused. 55% merlot, 37% cabernet franc and 8% cabernet sauvignon. VN95+95–97 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2016
The 2015 Canon La Gaffelière is seriously impressive. Like all of Stephan von Neipperg’s wines in this vintage, the Canon La Gaffelière is endowed with considerable richness and a sense of vertical structure. The significant presence of Cabernet Franc gives the wine striking aromatic lift, which it very much needs. Mocha, red cherry jam and sweet floral notes give the 2015 its soaring perfume. This exceptionally beautiful Saint-Émilion is going to need time to fully come together, but it is super-impressive, even in the early going. The 2015 has been nothing short of magnificent on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. The presence of Cabernet Franc is felt in the wine’s strong aromatic signature. SP94+94–97 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2016
Dark and winey, with currant paste and fig notes backed by slightly briary grip and an ample dose of toast. There’s good energy here and nice vivacity, despite the darker profile today, and this should easily round into form after the élevage. WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2018
This structured wine also offers juicy, elegant fruit. Full of black plums, spice from judicious wood aging and acidity, its core remains to develop. The wine needs to age so drink after 2024. RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Apr 2016
The 2015 Canon la Gaffeliere is a blend of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 19 September and 6 October at 37 hl/ha and matured in 55% new oak barrels. It has another “cool” bouquet, a common thread among Comte Stephan Von Neipperg’s 2015s — very restrained at first, nicely focused and gradually revealing undergrowth and even a subtle charcoal scent (probably from the Cabernet Sauvignon). The palate is medium-bodied with black fruit laced with graphite and cedar, the Cabernet brothers really defining the character of this Saint Emilion and edging it towards say, more Figeac in style. This is a fascinating 2015, more cerebral than previous vintages that I have tasted over the years.Compare at $156.99 $125.59 - Chateau Pichon Baron Pauillac 2015 / 750 ml.WE9898 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2018
This is one of the great successes of this vintage. It is generous and rich while also solid and structured. The combination of the essence of black currant and the elegant tannic structure are superb. This is a wine for serious aging and the wine should not be broached before 2026. VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2018
A dramatic, sweeping wine, the Pichon-Longueville Baron is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. The 2015 is dense, plush and totally voluptuous as it sweeps across the palate to make its presence known. Nuanced and poised, with seemingly endless layers of nuance, the 2015 is super-impressive. A melange of dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, mint, spice and rose petal builds as this towering, dramatic Pauillac shows off its allure. In 2015, Pichon Baron is endowed with spectacular balance and class. This is quite simply a brilliant showing from the 2015. RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Feb 2018
Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Pichon-Longueville Baron is enticingly scented of chocolate-covered cherries, crushed red currants and mulberries with touches of baking spices, potpourri and bay leaves plus a hint of fallen leaves. Sumptuously elegant, refreshing and medium-bodied with gorgeous, expressive, perfumed red fruits and very fine, very firm tannins, it has a persistent, perfumed finish. Its remarkable intensity, freshness and very firm frame suggest a long-lived Pichon Baron, which should cellar gracefully for 30+ years. JS96+96–97 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, April 1, 2016
Very solid and muscular Pichon Baron with ripe and velvety tannins. Full and very rich with balance of ripe fruit that deliver blackberry, walnut and spice. Warm and ripe yet finishes cool and sassy. SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2018
A juicy, well-knit style, with energetic plum and black currant compote notes that are studded with anise and black tea accents. Has a muscular edge through the finish, with brambly grip holding sway for now. There’s more than enough fruit to put this away for a bit. Best from 2022 through 2035. 14,833 cases made.Compare at $189.99 $151.99
