Louis Jadot Volnay Clos des Chênes Premier Cru

Domaine Louis Jadot
2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 50565

RP90+90–92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2019
From the southern side of this large premier cru, the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Maison Louis Jadot) offers up appealing aromas of plums, pomegranate, espresso roast, raw cocoa and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with good depth and concentration and a broad-shouldered chassis of fine but chalky tannin. This looks promising. (William Kelley)
VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019
The 2017 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru manifests quite potent marine scents on the nose, touches of kelp and marsh tincturing the mainly black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, offering ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with orange peel and marmalade. This has good density and similar length to the Clos de la Barre, if not quite the same precision. Still, this is a fine Volnay.

Benjamin Leroux Vosne-Romanée

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 53557

RP88+88–90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Feb 2020
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village opens in the glass with notes of wild berries, woodsmoke, plums and spices. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, built around powdery tannins and lively acids. Leroux produced fully 32 barrels of this cuvée this year.
VN88+88–90 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village has a perfumed bouquet with pressed rose petal scents infusing the red currant and strawberry scents, the whole-bunch addition lending a subtle pepperiness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and quite strict and linear in style. There’s a little toughness on the finish that will need some bottle age to soften. A serious Vosne Village.

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village has primal grapefruit and lemongrass bouquet that needs a little more mineral expression. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. A very textural Puligny with a crisp, fresh yet generous finish. Leroux’s decision to pick this first among all his vineyards pays dividends.

The 2019 Volnay Village comes from 1.38-hectare over 6 parcels. It has another overly floral bouquet with red cherry and strawberry fruit laced with wilted rise petal. The palate is medium-bodied with brittle tannins, quite cohesive with a gentle grip towards the finish. Fine transparency here, classic, almost old school Volnay that will drink well over the next decade. (Neal Martin)
RP88+88–90 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
Aromas of black plums and raspberries, framed by a deft touch of spicy oak, introduce the 2019 Volnay Vieilles Vignes, a medium-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated wine built around bright acids and powdery tannins. From eight parcels amounting to some 1.8 hectares, it’s the domaine’s most consequential cuvée. (William Kelley)

The 2019 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru sees 20% new oak. It has a very harmonious bouquet with pure cranberry and raspberry fruit, though maybe not the most complex example that I encountered from this vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip, quite structured, a hint of spice and balsamic behind the raspberry and cranberry fruit with a light cola note on the finish. I am fascinated to see how this Fremiets will develop.

The best Burgundy wines are stately and elegant, with mystique and complexity that is distinctly feminine. These northeastern France appellations are famed for some of the greatest reds and whites in the world.

Although there is a growing awareness for the light, fresh Aligote, the reigning white of the Burgundy region is Chardonnay. From the soft, ripe Maconnais through the sophisticated, intricate whites from the Cote de Beaune to the crisp, mineral-driven Chablis, every appellation's production style is evident. Many of these whites are long-lived and age-worthy, deepening in complexity for up to ten years or more.

With very few exceptions, red Burgundy is made from 100% Pinot Noir. The village Bourgognes are lighter and leaner than their California counterparts, but with bright red fruit notes. The higher-end crus tend to be richly flavored with earthy mushroom notes and are capable of aging gracefully for decades.
