Burgundy

Burgundy

The best Burgundy wines are stately and elegant, with mystique and complexity that is distinctly feminine. These northeastern France appellations are famed for some of the greatest reds and whites in the world.

Although there is a growing awareness for the light, fresh Aligote, the reigning white of the Burgundy region is Chardonnay. From the soft, ripe Maconnais through the sophisticated, intricate whites from the Cote de Beaune to the crisp, mineral-driven Chablis, every appellation's production style is evident. Many of these whites are long-lived and age-worthy, deepening in complexity for up to ten years or more.

With very few exceptions, red Burgundy is made from 100% Pinot Noir. The village Bourgognes are lighter and leaner than their California counterparts, but with bright red fruit notes. The higher-end crus tend to be richly flavored with earthy mushroom notes and are capable of aging gracefully for decades.

Beautiful fresh, bright fruit with cherry and ripe-strawberry character, as well as hints of spices. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a pretty finish. So delicious to drink now.

Broad and luscious, this red features black cherry, boysenberry, mineral and spice aromas and flavors. It’s concentrated and supple, yet well-built, with a spine of tannins and acidity emerging on the lingering aftertaste. Drink now through 2028. 7,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. The flinty promise of slight reduction is the first notion on the nose of this wine, followed by a bright, juicy red-cherry tone. The palate also has that appetizing flintiness surrounding ripe, almost fleshy cherry that sits around a core of freshness. Subtle, juicy tannins appear on the appealing finish. (Anne Krebiehl MW)

Sweet cream and hazelnuts lend richness to vibrant lemon and yellow-apple flavors in this concentrated, weighty expression of La Forêt. Vinified entirely in stainless steel and matured in three- to four-year-old barrels, it’s ripe and rich in extraction but maintains a steeliness and tension too. Approaching peak now, the wine should improve through 2030.

In spite of the generous ripeness, this remains surprisingly cool and delicate with a flinty note nicely complementing the candied lemon and lime, vanilla and jasmine aromas. Just the right amount of creaminess on the mid-palate to give this a silky quality. Long, refined mineral finish that pulls you back for more. Drink or hold.
