Burgundy

Burgundy

The best Burgundy wines are stately and elegant, with mystique and complexity that is distinctly feminine. These northeastern France appellations are famed for some of the greatest reds and whites in the world.

Although there is a growing awareness for the light, fresh Aligote, the reigning white of the Burgundy region is Chardonnay. From the soft, ripe Maconnais through the sophisticated, intricate whites from the Cote de Beaune to the crisp, mineral-driven Chablis, every appellation's production style is evident. Many of these whites are long-lived and age-worthy, deepening in complexity for up to ten years or more.

With very few exceptions, red Burgundy is made from 100% Pinot Noir. The village Bourgognes are lighter and leaner than their California counterparts, but with bright red fruit notes. The higher-end crus tend to be richly flavored with earthy mushroom notes and are capable of aging gracefully for decades.

  5. Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Saint Claire

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#44037

    VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
The 2019 Chablis Vieilles Vignes de Sainte Claire is more backward than Brocard’s other cuvées in this vintage, reluctantly unveiling melted wax and dried pineapple scents, a very slight reduction just dampening things down. The palate is balanced with a honeyed opening, like the Montmains demonstrating a little overripeness, with tropical notes dominating the finish. It just needs more tension and more nervosité and as such, I would broach it in its youth.

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
The velvety texture of this white is an ideal vehicle for the peach, hazelnut, baking spice and pastry flavors. Remains focused and long, courtesy of the lemony acidity. Drink now through 2024. 1,000 cases imported.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2019
Fermented and aged in wood, this is a rich wine. Its spice, ripe pineapple and mango flavors and dense texture show intense freshness as well as layers of toast, a complex texture and a short aging potential. Drink from 2021.

    2019 / 375 ml. | Item#39273

    RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Oct 2020
Wafting from the glass with aromas of buttered peaches, ripe orchard fruit and flowers, the 2019 Mâcon-Villages (Maison Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, glossy and textural, with ripe but succulent acids to buttress its charming core of fruit. There’s a bit more depth and substance here than in its 2018 counterpart.
    SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2020

  9. Domaine Laroche Chablis Grand Cru Les Blanchots

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#53923

    WE9797 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2020
Creaminess on the nose of this wine comes with the richness of crème fraiche edged with lemon. A velvety palate enforces this bright, mellow creaminess, layering it with chalky coolness pervaded with zesty lemon. The roundness of 2018 is conserved in refreshing smoothness. Depth is already hinted at on the long, smooth and chalky finish. Drink 2025–2045.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020
Flavors of peach, melon, apple and mineral are embedded in the creamy texture of this complex and expressive white, which is balanced and stays in bounds, with good underlying cut and a long, vanilla bean finish. Drink now through 2025. 1,290 cases made, 215 cases imported.
    RP90+90–92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The 2018 Chablis Grand Cru Les Blanchots was still quite primary and reserved, exhibiting discrete notes of peach and lemon, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and tangy palate with plenty of chewy structuring extract.

  15. Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses Île des Vergelesses

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#43601

    VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019
The 2017 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from an east-facing hill equally balanced between clay and limestone, averaging 45-year-old vines. (It was supposed to be classified Grand Cru in 1936 but was denied because it can suffer in cooler vintages.) The bouquet is fresh and detailed, featuring mineral-rich dark berry fruit laced with bay leaf and black tea. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This comes replete with crunchy red berry fruit laced with cracked black pepper and an insistent grip toward the almost Morey-like finish. A very sophisticated Ile de Vergelesses that should give 12 to 15 years of drinking pleasure.
    RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Jan 2019
Deeper, more multidimensional and more complete than the Les Vergelesses, the 2017 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses offers up scents of sweet berries, forest floor, wild plums and grilled meats. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a quiet presence and impressive length. It’s the king of the premiers crus from Chandon de Briailles this year.
