Champagne

Champagne

Champagne. The word alone elicits thoughts of luxury, grandeur and poise. Located in northern France, Champagne is one of the northernmost wine-producing regions in the world. This tasty, bubbly beverage is made with varying percentages of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier… if you see a bottle labeled “Blanc de Blanc” it is made from 100% Chardonnay while “Blanc de Noir” is made from only Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Famous Champagne houses such as Krug, Veuve Clicquot, Ponsardin, Bollinger, Louis Roederer, Tattinger, and Moët & Chandon have been refining their craft for over 100 years (200+ in some cases!). The highest examples of Champagne know no equal and thus, have been legally protected. With only the rarest of exceptions, no bottle of sparkling wine produced outside the Champagne region can have the word “Champagne” printed on its label.

  1. Pol Roger Brut Réserve Champagne

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#13953

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Mar 2016
Straw yellow and with a golden hue in color, the Pol Roger NV Réserve Brut displays a brilliant, perfectly ripe but also fresh, highly elegant and refined fruit aroma on the nose; think of cooked pip fruits like pears and apples, but also quince-confiture and yellow stone fruits, such as apricots and peaches intermixed with vanilla, brioche (pain aux raisins), some nutty flavors and also some white floral notes. On the palate, this medium-bodied Brut is as round (if not pretty sweet) and fruit-driven as it is delicate, pure and very elegant. The mousse is deliciously fine and leads this charming and perfectly balanced fizz to a long, aromatic, stunningly dry and slightly mineral, impressively long finish. This is extremely well done Champagne from equal parts of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay sourced in 30 different crus. This Réserve includes 25% of reserve wines and was dosed with nine grams per liter.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
A well-cut Champagne, with a zesty mousse, this offers a harmonious mix of crème de cassis, Honeycrisp apple, candied ginger and toasty notes, offering a subtle, smoke- and spice-tinged finish. Drink now through 2021. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 110,000 cases made, 12,000 cases imported.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2016
This is a well-balanced, ripe wine in the producer’s rich house style. A brighter, more mineral crispness and acidity also come through strongly in this bottling. The aftertaste brings together a mineral texture and full yellow and apple fruits. Drink now.
    WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 31, 2009
Bright white chalk and yellow fruit scents contrast darker tones of root vegetables and earth. This is clean and dry, with minerality that lasts. The acidity makes it a refreshing match for tempura.

  2. Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#70904

    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2010
Always a rich non-vintage, this latest bottling doesn’t disappoint expectations. It has a rich, biscuity character, hints of toast along with pure citrus and fresh apricots. It is ripe, generous, to be drunk with food.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2018
Bright, almost crunchy acidity and the finely detailed mousse carry an expressive mix of poached apricot and cherry fruit, toast point, orange peel and ground ginger flavors in this firm, focused Champagne, with a graphite-laced, minerally finish. Drink now through 2022. 12,000 cases imported.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Dec 2008
The NV Brut Special Cuvée opens with elegant, well-delineated aromas of honey, brioche, roasted nuts, orange zest, flowers and peaches, of which appear on the palate in a classy, finessed expression of the house style. This is an especially refined and delicious NV Champagne. The Special Cuvée is roughly 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier (2004, 2003) sourced from a variety of vineyards. Bollinger adds 5–10% of reserve wines (in this case from 1995 and 1996, aged in magnums) which gives this offering its lovely complexity. The dosage is 7–9 grams per liter. This is Lot: 807704, disgorged towards the end of 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008–2012.
    WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2013
At every turn of flavor, barrel-fermented base wines add opulence to this Champagne with scents of apple wood, ginger and mustard seed balancing the youthful fruit. The flavors buzz with acidity and richness, a contrast of green apple with broader notes of baked apple; the texture is creamy, the finish completely clean. The wine’s structure is substantial enough to serve with sliced, seared beef filet at a holiday party.
    ST8888 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2005
Light gold color with a strong mousse. Classic Bollinger aromas of poached pear, caramel apple and toasted bread, lifted by a bright hint of lime. Full and rich on the palate, held up by good acids. The notes of apple, pear and toast repeat in the mouth. Finishes with flavors of singed apples and pears.

  4. Champagne Palmer & Co. Brut Réserve

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#50957

    JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/9/2020
Another outstanding effort from this estate is the NV Brut Reserve. Lightly hued with a crisp bouquet of crushed citrus, golden apples, and toasted brioche, it has medium-bodied richness, crisp acids, a great mousse, and shows a clean, precise vibe on the finish. It brings serious acidity yet still stays nicely balanced. It’s going to evolve for a solid decade.
    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Sep 2021
The latest rendition of Palmer’s NV Brut Réserve is quite reserved out of the gates, unwinding with notes of crisp orchard fruit, citrus zest and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, taut and tangy, with bracing acids and a pinpoint mousse, it’s not quite as generous as its immediate predecessors have been.

  6. Champagne Henriot Brut Souverain

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#28190

    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2009
A beautifully fine mousse indicates the class of this finely molded wine. It has some weight, flavors of green apples, with hints of fresh apricots. There is extreme freshness here, the style dry but rich. This bottling tastes young and would be worth aging six months. Editors’ Choice.
    WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2014
Henriot’s non-vintage blend takes a panoramic view of Champagne, working with fruit from 25 crus, 60 percent pinot noir (mostly Montagne de Reims) and 40 percent chardonnay (mostly Côte des Blancs). One third of the blend is reserve wine from four vintages. The current release is brisk, bright, zesty and grand, its flavors combining fresh lemon and earthy roasted fennel in a gracious, mouthwatering Champagne.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2018
A finely balanced and creamy Champagne. Smoky mineral and toast notes on the nose lead to flavors of crunchy white peach and lemon curd, with a green waft of spring blossom on the fresh palate. Drink now through 2021. 6,000 cases imported.
    ST9090 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2008
Light yellow with a delicate bead. Smoky pear, quince and orange on the nose, with faint yeastiness adding depth. Brisk and dry, displaying finely etched orchard fruit flavors and a jolt of bitter lime zest on the back end. The clean, focused, firm finish repeats the smoky note. I like this wine’s finesse.

  7. Champagne Louis Roederer Collection 242

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#55845

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 5, 2021
Aromas of cooked apple, bread dough and lemon tart follow through to a full body with round, delicious fruit and a rich, flavorful finish. Yet, it remains tight and fine with lovely, compressed bubbles. New energy and freshness. Medium-to full-bodied with layers of fruit and vivid intensity. 42% chardonnay, 36% pinot noir and 22% pinot meunier. 8 grams dosage. Four years on the less. A new-format non-vintage that designates the year of the 242nd harvest, 2017, plus reserve wine of 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Drink or hold.
    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Sep 2021
So much for the composition and concept of the new NV Brut Collection 242, but how does it taste? This debut release is very impressive indeed, wafting from the glass with notes of pear, peach, ripe citrus fruit, toasted almonds, fresh pastry and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and textural, it’s concentrated and layered, with lively acids, an enlivening pinpoint mousse and a long, sapid finish. Brut Premier was already a very persuasive wine, but the new Brut Collection nevertheless represents a step up.
    WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
This first release of Roederer’s new Collection is based on the 2017 harvest, the 242nd for the house. This wine replaces Brut Premier. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon bases the Collection blend on a “perpetual reserve,” held in stainless steel since 2012, with wine added in each vintage: half pinot noir, half chardonnay, none of it having undergone malolactic conversion. For the 242 blend, he included some oak-aged reserve wines before selecting individual parcel wines from partner growers, focusing on chardonnay, along with some meunier and pinot noir from the Marne Valley. The final blend is 34 percent perpetual reserve, 10 percent oak-aged reserves, and 56 percent from the 2017 harvest. While Brut Premier was a more spherical wine in the mouth, Collection 242 is finer, with greater length of flavor and more energy. The scent is floral and seashell-mineral, the texture caressing, then tense. My notes and the comments from the panel are all about the wine’s harmony and structure, without a word about fruit. It’s an exciting wine to taste and to drink.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The NV Collection 242 is a new wine from Roederer that replaces the Brut Premier in the range. The Collection (which now will be numbered by harvest) is a blend of three components: a perpetual reserve done in the classic non-malo Roederer style, reserve wines in oak with a touch of malo, and a base vintage, in this case 2017. That blend results in a NV Champagne that offers lovely richness and resonance, with plenty of yellow orchard fruit and floral character. Whereas Brut Premier was typically a focused, nervy wine that, while consistently excellent, also was not always in line with the Roederer house style, the 242 tastes more like a Roederer Champagne in terms of its complexity. Incidentally, there is no Vintage, Cristal or Cristal Rosé in 2017, so all the best lots went into this bottling. Dosage is 8 grams per liter, so lower than the 9 or so that was typical for recent Brut Premier and much lower than the 12–13 that was once customary. The 242 was also bottled with a bit less sugar than the norm, which results in lower atmospheres of pressure in the bottle and silkier texture.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
A bright, harmonious Champagne, layering well-cut acidity and a chalky underpinning with flavors of white cherry, crunchy pineapple, green almond and beeswax. Brut Premier Cru
    NV / 750 ml. | Item#37170

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2017
A mouthwatering, seamless Champagne that caresses the palate like raw silk, with vibrant acidity framing rich and finely meshed flavors of nectarine, chopped almond, fleur de sel and honey. Offers a long, chalky finish of lime blossom and spice. Disgorged December 2015. Drink now through 2022. 450 cases imported.
    ST9393 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2011
Green-tinged yellow. Pineapple, pear, candied ginger and vanilla bean on the scented nose, with a chalky overtone adding lift. Dry and impressively focused, offering lively citrus and orchard fruit flavors that pick up smokiness and exotic floral and spice qualities with air. Leaves a strong mineral note behind on the long, spicy, floral-accented finish.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2011
The NV Brut Cuvee Grand Cellier possesses gorgeous intensity in its piercing notes of lemon, white flowers and spices. Smoky, floral notes continue to emerge as the wine shows off its class and sheer energy. This is a great showing from the Grand Cellier. The Grand Cellier is 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir. This release is based on 2008, with reserve wines from 2007 and 2006. The fruit is sourced from Les Hautes Greves and Les Basses Greves, both in Rilly la Montagne. Dosage is 10 grams per liter. Disgorged May 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2011–2015.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2017
The NV Grand Cellier is soft, open-knit and creamy, but as always done in the restrained, mid-weight style that is the house signature. Lemon confit, white flowers and mint open up first, followed by bright, chalky notes that extend the finish. This is a terrific showing from the Grand Cellier. This release is based on 2013, with reserve wines from 2012 and 2011. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. Disgorged December 2015.

    2014 / 750 ml. | Item#49141

    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2020
The Roederer style has become drier as the fruit has become riper and this finely balanced Champagne is an excellent example. Taut and textured, with great freshness allied to the mineral and fruit tones, this wine just hints at tannins as it moves towards maturity. Drink from 2022.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
Wafting from the glass with notes of pear, raspberries and honeycomb, mingled with hints of white flowers and brioche, Roederer’s 2014 Brut Vintage Rosé is medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with fine concentration, brisk acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse. Long and penetrating, this is a fabulous cuvée that punches well above its weight, and it comes warmly recommended.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
The 2014 Rosé is soft, gracious and in inviting, all in a delicate style that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Orange peel, spice, mint, star anise, rose petal and dried flowers give the 2014 a decidedly exotic feel. Airy and perfumed, with lovely understated persistence, the 2014 is a very pretty wine. I would prefer to drink it on the young side. Like all of the Roederer Rosés. The vintage Rosé is a blend of Chardonnay (in this case from Chouilly) and an infusion of still red Pinot (from Cumières) that was given 7–10 days of cold soak. Dosage is 8 grams per liter.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 7, 2020
Rapierlike acidity creates a mouthwatering frame for flavors of steeped peach and raspberry fruit, lemon pastry cream and Marcona almond in this harmonious rosé Champagne, which is racy and finely knit, with lovely hints of licorice, saline and orchard blossom riding the satiny mousse on the long finish. Disgorged summer 2019. Drink now through 2034.

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#52943

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
The NV Brut Rosé is flat-out delicious. The word ’balance’ is so overused in wine, but I really can’t think of a better way to describe the Brut Rosé. It is not nervy nor overly rich, but just impeccable in its poise and overall harmony. A healthy amount of Pinot lends volume and intensity to this Chardonnay-based Rosé. This is the sort of wine that is opened and disappears within a few minutes. This release is a blend of vintages 2017 and 2016. Disgorged: August, 2019.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019
Firm and focused, this mouthwatering rosé is lightly chalky in texture, with an integrated range of white peach, pink grapefruit sorbet and blanched almond. A briny hint of oyster shell cleans the lingering finish. Disgorged September 2018. Drink now through 2022.

    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2015
The quality of this nonvintage wine from Piper-Hedsieck is a sign of the increasing quality of the range as a whole. It’s a wine that hovers comfortably between freshness and maturity, between a soft dosage and crisp fresh apples. This bottling is ready to drink.
    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Dec 2008
Ripe pears, crisp green apples and flowers emerge from Piper-Heidsieck’s NV Brut Cuvée. This medium-bodied non-vintage Champagne offers excellent persistence and a long, clean finish. It is a very solid effort at this level. The Brut Cuvée is 55% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier and 15% Chardonnay. This is lot L070921 12253, disgorged December, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008–2010.

Medium straw. Light gold, with a strong mousse. Smoky, rich and floral on the nose, with suggestions of orange peel, pear and jasmine. Nicely concentrated and moderately weighty, with flavors of lemon cream and buttered toast. Quite long, with the butter and lemon notes resonating.

Light yellow. Aromas of poached pear, honey and buttered toast, plus a hint of white peach that gains strength with air. Fleshy, broad and appealingly sweet but in no way cloying, offering juicy orchard fruit and melon flavors and a touch of bitter peach pit. A buttery quality comes up on the finish, which clings with strong fruity intensity. I imagine that this opulent, fruity but focused Champagne would do wonders with practically any cheese out there, especially salty, washed rind and blue versions.
