Champagne

Champagne

Champagne. The word alone elicits thoughts of luxury, grandeur and poise. Located in northern France, Champagne is one of the northernmost wine-producing regions in the world. This tasty, bubbly beverage is made with varying percentages of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier… if you see a bottle labeled “Blanc de Blanc” it is made from 100% Chardonnay while “Blanc de Noir” is made from only Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Famous Champagne houses such as Krug, Veuve Clicquot, Ponsardin, Bollinger, Louis Roederer, Tattinger, and Moët & Chandon have been refining their craft for over 100 years (200+ in some cases!). The highest examples of Champagne know no equal and thus, have been legally protected. With only the rarest of exceptions, no bottle of sparkling wine produced outside the Champagne region can have the word “Champagne” printed on its label.

  1. Pol Roger Brut Réserve Champagne

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#13953

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Mar 2016
Straw yellow and with a golden hue in color, the Pol Roger NV Réserve Brut displays a brilliant, perfectly ripe but also fresh, highly elegant and refined fruit aroma on the nose; think of cooked pip fruits like pears and apples, but also quince-confiture and yellow stone fruits, such as apricots and peaches intermixed with vanilla, brioche (pain aux raisins), some nutty flavors and also some white floral notes. On the palate, this medium-bodied Brut is as round (if not pretty sweet) and fruit-driven as it is delicate, pure and very elegant. The mousse is deliciously fine and leads this charming and perfectly balanced fizz to a long, aromatic, stunningly dry and slightly mineral, impressively long finish. This is extremely well done Champagne from equal parts of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay sourced in 30 different crus. This Réserve includes 25% of reserve wines and was dosed with nine grams per liter.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
A well-cut Champagne, with a zesty mousse, this offers a harmonious mix of crème de cassis, Honeycrisp apple, candied ginger and toasty notes, offering a subtle, smoke- and spice-tinged finish. Drink now through 2021. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 110,000 cases made, 12,000 cases imported.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2016
This is a well-balanced, ripe wine in the producer’s rich house style. A brighter, more mineral crispness and acidity also come through strongly in this bottling. The aftertaste brings together a mineral texture and full yellow and apple fruits. Drink now.
    WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 31, 2009
Bright white chalk and yellow fruit scents contrast darker tones of root vegetables and earth. This is clean and dry, with minerality that lasts. The acidity makes it a refreshing match for tempura.

  2. Champagne Henriot Brut Souverain

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#28190

    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2009
A beautifully fine mousse indicates the class of this finely molded wine. It has some weight, flavors of green apples, with hints of fresh apricots. There is extreme freshness here, the style dry but rich. This bottling tastes young and would be worth aging six months. Editors’ Choice.
    WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2014
Henriot’s non-vintage blend takes a panoramic view of Champagne, working with fruit from 25 crus, 60 percent pinot noir (mostly Montagne de Reims) and 40 percent chardonnay (mostly Côte des Blancs). One third of the blend is reserve wine from four vintages. The current release is brisk, bright, zesty and grand, its flavors combining fresh lemon and earthy roasted fennel in a gracious, mouthwatering Champagne.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2018
A finely balanced and creamy Champagne. Smoky mineral and toast notes on the nose lead to flavors of crunchy white peach and lemon curd, with a green waft of spring blossom on the fresh palate. Drink now through 2021. 6,000 cases imported.
    ST9090 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2008
Light yellow with a delicate bead. Smoky pear, quince and orange on the nose, with faint yeastiness adding depth. Brisk and dry, displaying finely etched orchard fruit flavors and a jolt of bitter lime zest on the back end. The clean, focused, firm finish repeats the smoky note. I like this wine’s finesse.

  3. Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé Brut

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#18369

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2015
Vivid orange-pink. An expressive, spice-accented bouquet evokes fresh raspberry, orange pith, white flowers and ginger, with a hint of rhubarb adding an earthy flourish. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering intense red fruit and bitter citrus flavors underscored by chalky mineral and white pepper notes. Rich yet lively rosé with excellent closing thrust and floral persistence.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2019
The latest iteration of Laurent-Perrier’s NV Brut Cuvée Rosé is showing brilliantly, bursting from the glass with notes of smoky red berry fruit, apples, blood orange, pomegranate and warm biscuits. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a delicate mousse, good depth at the core and ripe acids, concluding with a sapid, gently phenolic finish. This is a sophisticated, gastronomic rosé that would work well at table.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
Firm and finely knit, this offers richness in a sleek frame, with crushed raspberry, blood orange peel, smoke and toasted almond notes set on the satiny mousse. The finish echoes subtle saffron and spice accents. Drink now through 2022. 9,600 cases imported.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2004
Starts off toasty and citrusy, then seems to add weight and size in the glass, adding layers of cherry-berry fruit and a hint of dark chocolate. It ends up being a big, broad shouldered wine you could pair with main-course meats.
    WS8787 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2006
Soft red fruit flavors of strawberry and red currant infuse this rich wine, fatty as the crab and watermelon salad with which you might serve it.

  4. G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge Brut Champagne

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#45948

    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2015
Flavors of poached pear, candied lemon zest and biscuit, with a rich hint of roasted almond, ride the lively bead of this crisp, minerally Champagne. Drink now through 2018. 15,000 cases imported.
    WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2007
This must be one of the most familiar nonvintage Champagnes, so it’s good to be able to report that it is much improved. The dosage has been lowered, and there is considerable freshness, crispness with apple and toast. It is full-bodied but well balanced.
    ST8888 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2006
Light gold. Buttered apple and pear aromas, with hints of anise and brioche. Medium in weight, with a silky texture and sweet orchard fruit flavors framed by gentle acidity. Broad and rich on the finish, with a lingering note of sweet butter.

  6. Charles Ellner Grande Réserve Brut

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#25259

    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2014
An understated version, with a finely knit frame of firm acidity and satiny texture, showing subtle layers of biscuit, smoke, dried cherry and honey that should become more expressive with short-term cellaring. Best from 2015 through 2019.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Dec 2010
The NV Brut Cuvee de Reserve is a tasty, entry-level Champagne. Expressive, well-delineated aromatics lead to a focused core of fruit as this fresh, vibrant wine opens up in the glass. This shows lovely freshness married to the weight that comes from the Pinot, in an engaging, highly pleasing style. This is one of the finest wines I have tasted from Ellner. The Cuvee de Reserve is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir from the 2004 and 2003 harvests. Dosage was 10 grams per liter. This is Lot LC1043025XEL035, disgorged June, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2010–2015.

  7. Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#22934

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2018
Fresh, with focus and intensity, this nonetheless elegant Champagne is finely knit and minerally, offering flavors of crunchy white peach, toast and lemon curd, accented by aromatic hints of cherry blossom, fresh tarragon and spice that linger on the creamy finish. Drink now through 2022.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2017
Crisp with a delicious line of acidity and ripe with apple and lemon flavors, this wine balances freshness with hints of maturity from aging in Ruinart’s subterranean cellars. It’s both taut with the tension of cool-climate Chardonnay and showing signs of toastiness.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2013
If chardonnay could be a red wine, it might have the red fruit flavors of this blanc de blancs. Perhaps it’s the floral aspects that turn its chamomile and yellow flower notes toward violets, or the deep earth tones adding color to the flavor. The fruit is persistent, sunny in the middle, then shaded by an almost tannic character to the lees that places the wine with food, particularly roast veal.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2011
This is a fabulous version of Ruinart’s NV Brut Blanc de Blancs. The wine seems fresher, more vibrant and less obviously sweet than in the past, all of which makes this a far more interesting wine. The trademark profile of lemon, jasmine and green apples is very much in the forefront while the wine’s textural finesse and length are both first-class. This release of the NV Brut makes a great introduction to the wines of Ruinart, Champagne’s oldest house. This is Lot LAGJSAF. Anticipated maturity: 2011–2014.

  8. Ruinart Rosé Champagne

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#22933

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
This lovely rosé Champagne is harmonious and bright, featuring sleek acidity layered with the lacy mousse and an expressive range of white peach, ripe raspberry and pickled ginger flavors, with hints of smoke and biscuit. Elegant. Drink now through 2023.
    WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2013
This deep pink rosé starts off from a delicate scent of spice and roses, strawberries and the freshly turned earth of a garden. It grows more powerful and grand with air, building fresh raspberry pinot vinosity, a fragrant essence of limestone and fruit that lasts.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2017
This soft, finely structured and salmon-hued wine has an explosive mousse. Its attractive strawberry fruit is balanced by rich acidity. Ripe, mouth-filling and softly creamy, it’s ready to drink now and has a rounded aftertaste.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Dec 2008
The NV Brut Rosé is made in a similarly elegant and refined style, even though it isn’t quite as expressive as the Blanc de Blancs at the outset. With time in the glass the Pinot qualities come through with greater focus. The NV Rosé offers excellent length and a polished personality in the signature Ruinart style. This is Lot: LAD7ZCA, disgorged July, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008–2011.

  9. Taittinger Prestige Rosé

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#29072

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2013
A firm, toasty rosé, with roasted hazelnut and smoke notes underscoring kirsch, dried strawberry, piecrust and fresh ginger flavors. This is lip-smacking, softened and balanced by a fine, creamy texture. Drink now through 2023.
    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, September 2, 2019
Darker color. Lots of fruit and a creamy texture with cooked apples and cherries and strawberry undertones. Medium to full body. Delicious finish that is dry and fruity. Drink now.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Dec 2009
The NV Brut Rose Prestige is a beautiful wine. Sweet, perfumed fruit emerges from this crisp, layered Champagne. Ideally the Brut Rose Prestige is best enjoyed as an aperitif as the light to medium-bodied frame is likely to be overwhelmed by food. This is truly a lovely effort for such a large property. Disgorged: end of May 2008, (not indicated on label). Anticipated maturity: 2009–2012.

    WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/11/2004
Straawberry, toast and dark chocolate scents lead the way. The flavors begin with berries, then get darker and toastier on the midpalate before ending with a refreshing blast of citrus. A very good rosé that should be easy to find.

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#60897

    SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2010
Candied apple character, with a hint of red berry and a refined texture, mark this elegant, medium-bodied bubbly, which is fresh, with a moderate finish.
    WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2007
Always an enjoyable non-vintage, Heidsieck Monopole’s style has changed little despite all the changes in ownership. It has a soft, open character, but never seems sweet, and is more rounded with creamy apple flavors and well-integrated acidity.
