Champagne

Champagne

Champagne. The word alone elicits thoughts of luxury, grandeur and poise. Located in northern France, Champagne is one of the northernmost wine-producing regions in the world. This tasty, bubbly beverage is made with varying percentages of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier… if you see a bottle labeled “Blanc de Blanc” it is made from 100% Chardonnay while “Blanc de Noir” is made from only Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Famous Champagne houses such as Krug, Veuve Clicquot, Ponsardin, Bollinger, Louis Roederer, Tattinger, and Moët & Chandon have been refining their craft for over 100 years (200+ in some cases!). The highest examples of Champagne know no equal and thus, have been legally protected. With only the rarest of exceptions, no bottle of sparkling wine produced outside the Champagne region can have the word “Champagne” printed on its label.

    Ayala Brut Majeur

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#34708

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2011
There’s a firm, chalky edge to this minerally Champagne, and mouthwatering flavors of candied lemon peel, green apple, crystallized honey and biscuit. This has an elegant texture and an overall sense of style. Drink now through 2020.
    ST8989 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2009
Bright yellow-gold. Pungent aromas of baked apple, pear skin, toasted nuts and brown spices. Rich and fleshy, offering palate-coating orchard fruit flavors and notes of allspice, herbs and toasty lees. Nicely blends sweetness and spiciness but finishes a bit abruptly, with an echo of dusty minerals.
    WS8989 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2009
Lush red apple flavors and cool, leesy mineral character combine in this clean, full-bodied Champagne. Its gentle, slightly sweet fruit will match crab.
    WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2011
Now owned by Bollinger, Ayala’s Champagnes have seen great improvement in recent years. This nonvintage Brut is complex, with its dry character given weight by a hind of toast, almonds and a taut aftertaste.
    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Dec 2010
The NV Brut Majeur shows lovely balance in an approachable, up-front style well-suited to near-term drinking. Clean, mineral notes add a sense of proportion on the fresh, vibrant finish. The blend is 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, 80% of which is from the 2004 vintage, while the rest of the wine is composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reserve wines. Disgorged January, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2010–2014.

    Ayala Brut Nature

    NV / 750 ml. ice jacket | Item#34709

    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2011
Ayala has made something of a specialty of very dry Champagne, and this delicate and deliciously food-friendly wine shows why. It is so well balanced, the bone dry citrus flavors integrated into the nervy texture. It would be worth aging a few months.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2010
A toasty Champagne, with a woolly texture, firm acidity and flavors of biscuit, smoke, straw and citrus zest. There’s a minerally vein throughout and good balance overall. Drink now through 2015.
    ST9090 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2011
Pale gold. Musky citrus pith and pear skin aromas are complicated by sweet butter, cherry pit and dried flowers. Rich and creamy on entry, then very firm and dry in the mid-palate, offering tangy lemon curd and orange zest flavors and subtle chalkiness. Finishes firm and long, repeating the citrus zest note.

    Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#30666

    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2011
Made with a high proportion of Pinot Meunier, this is elegant, fruity, with plenty of good acidity and a wonderful floral character. It is so fruity, fresh, a wine for real enjoyment.
    WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2013
This blend includes 40 percent pinot meunier, the balance equal parts pinot noir and chardonnay. Its remarkable fruitiness might be tied to the firm’s long, slow, cool fermentations, which, they believe, allow meunier to maintain its perfume. This is a graceful, vinous Champagne with dramatic high notes of roses and red fruit, finishing clean with a grounding of pale earthiness. It’s a lovely prediction of what Champagne might become in a warming climate.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2013
Bright, with tangy acidity and a lively bead, this displays fruit-forward flavors of macerated apricot, pineapple and Granny Smith apple, with hints of ginger, biscuit and kumquat. Drink now through 2016.
    ST9090 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2013
Light, bright gold. Fresh red berries, orange zest and white flowers on the perfumed nose. Juicy and precise, offering energetic redcurrant and blood orange flavors that show good concentration and a supple texture. A mineral nuance adds bite to the finish, with the floral note echoing.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Dec 2010
The NV Brut Reserve is a beautiful wine graced with layers of exquisite, mineral laced citrus, pears and white peaches. I suppose this could use a little more length through the mid-palate, but it is nevertheless a strikingly beautiful, pure wine at this price point.
