Tuscany

Tuscany

When wine writers discuss terroir they usually look to Burgundy or Bordeaux for examples, but Tuscany may produce some of the most convincing displays of terroir in action. Why does a Merlot or Cabernet grown in Tuscany taste like no other Merlot or Cabernet in the world? It simply tastes Tuscan—there’s a meaty, mouthwateringly savory quality to Tuscan reds that cannot be replicated in any other viticultural area.

For example, Tuscany’s most prestigious wine, Brunello di Montalcino, has this savory quality in spades. Meanwhile, some of the finest Super-Tuscans (made from international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and others) from districts such as Bolgheri or Sant’Antimo may have more weight and heft than Sangiovese, but the Tuscan terroir provides a common link. There are refreshing whites made here, such as Vermentino or Vernacchia di San Gimignano, but make no mistake—this is red wine country.

From the Magliano area of Coastal Tuscany, the Aia Vecchia 2016 Vermentino (with 5% Viognier) is a terrific wine and one of the expressions I most enjoyed drinking in this tasting of Italian whites under $25. The wine shows a bright level of crispness and tonic energy, with green notes of lime, honeydew melon and lemon mousse. It’s a simple wine, for sure, but the Vermentino grape is really on a roll right now, so I highly suggest this wine if you haven’t already tasted this crisp Italian varietal from sun-drenched Coastal Tuscany. You just can’t beat this great value.

    40th Harvest
    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#44704

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 15, 2017
Cherry, leather and iron notes mark this suave, elegant red. A bit reticent now, but the fruit is fresh and long on the finish. The dense tannins leave a mouthcoating impression, but this opens up beautifully over a few hours. Best from 2021 through 2035. 10,000 cases made.

Marking the winery’s 40th harvest, this vintage offers classic Sangiovese fragrance: wild berry, blue flower, baking spice and a whiff of new leather. The palate is sleek and elegant, doling out juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and star anise, framed by lithe, polished tannins and fresh acidity. It’s loaded with finesse and tempting now but will be even better with a few more years in bottle. Drink 2019–2026.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2017
Altesino is now celebrating the release of its 40th harvest. In fact, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is inscribed with the words "our 40th Harvest" in gold letters on its front label. This is a truly delicious wine that exceeds my expectations. I love the way it takes full command of the slightly bolder and more opulent dark fruit aromas produced in this hot vintage. Black cherry, plum and crème de cassis converge on the bouquet. Grilled herb, forest floor, licorice and exotic spice play supporting roles. The finish offers moderate acidity on the Sangiovese scale. This means the wine is mush fresher and more tonic than most Tuscan reds. The finish is long and silky.

A juicy Brunello with plum and dark-chocolate character, yet this always remains subtle and fresh. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Drink or hold.

Deep ruby-red. Perfumed aromas and flavors of blueberry and violet. Clean and juicy, with lively but harmonious acidity extending the fresh flavors on the long vibrant back end. This is the estate’s 40th harvest.
