Portugal is famous for its amazing port wines, and rightly so. However, Portugal is also a rising star when it comes to table wines.

The top Portuguese table wines are typically fantastic values when compared to their peers from other countries. Every year, new high-end reds from grapes like Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional are appearing, to go along with whites like the light Vinho Verdes that Portugal made famous. With its dark gold color and sweet, nutty aromas, this is on the rich side of the Madeira taste spectrum. It has attractive fruitiness and aged citrus acidity that go together, leaving a wine that is both sweet but also fresh.
    SP8585 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2002
Straightforward flavors of molasses, orange and toffee, modest concentration and medium body, with a touch of heat on the lingering finish. Drink now.

Here’s a good introduction to Madeira. Appealing, straightforward flavors of caramel are followed by a tangy acidity and a walnut note on the finish. Drink now.
    WE8585 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2008
A traditional medium style, aged in cask for three years before bottling. This is light, flavored with dates and softly sweet. It misses some of the classic Madeira acidity, leaving a gentle aftertaste.

    WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2017
Named after an ancestor of the present owners who became a Catholic saint, this wine comes from a vast aristocratic estate northeast of Lisbon. It’s dense and fruity, full of tannins and dark plum flavor. Spicy and perfumed, it’s drinkable now but will be better from 2018.

    WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2006
Santa Eufemia is a new name on the U.S. market, from a vineyard in the Baixo Corgo, the western end of the Port vineyards. This is a mature 10-year-old, light in color and dry, with coffee and cocoa flavors. There is a delicious, lightly acidic, long-lasting aftertaste.

  10. Casa de Santar Dão
    Casa de Santar Dão

    2014 / 750 ml. | Item#35277

    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
The 2014 Tinto (Casa de Santar) is a blend of 50% Tinta Roriz, 30% Touriga Nacional and 20% Alfrocheiro, aged for nine months in a 50/50 blend of new and second use French oak. Another fine value from Global Wines (which owns Santar), this is simply seductive. (There will be no Reserva this year, which might have helped.) With caressing texture, it has a clean, dry finish and a very Burgundian feel. It admittedly has only modest concentration, but look at the price. In a poor vintage, it is a very nice performance for a value wine. Ultimately, I liked Global Wines’ Encontro (separately listed) slightly better as their best value offering this issue, but reasonable minds might differ. This has more velvet, that has more energy. They are both can’t-miss bargains at their price points. Drink this young — I doubt it has the ability to reward cellaring in this vintage (other years often do). It comes in at 13.5% alcohol.
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2016
Ripe and a touch brooding, with roasted plum and baked dark cherry flavors that are firmly tannic. Offers hints of anise and baker’s chocolate on the edgy finish. Drink now through 2019. 50,000 cases made.
    WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2016
This estate wine is soft, smooth and ready to drink. With its ripe red fruits and gentle tannins it is a fruity, generous wine, rich in juicy acidity and with a crisp aftertaste of acidity. Drink now.
