Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero

California Cabernet drinkers need to discover the wines of Ribera del Duero. These wines may be some of the most lush, full-bodied, oak-scented, hedonistically-styled wines to be coming out of Europe today.

Top-end Ribera del Duero wines traditionally see long periods of aging in new oak (often American, sometimes French), imparting a roasted character at once recognizable and unique (think espresso roast, toasted coconut, toffee, butterscotch and vanilla). Great Ribera del Duero has the depth, richness and deliciousness of high-end California Cabernet (and usually at a better price), along with an element of freshness so often lacking in blockbuster Cabs.

The 2013 Creta Roble, is also a custom cuvée from importer Eric Solomon. Made from 60-plus-year-old vines from an area of Ribera del Duera known as La Horra (Pingus and Aalto emerged from this area as well). This expansive, savory, complex, deep ruby/purple red wine shows notes of new saddle leather, black and red currants, has a savory, medium-bodied expansive mouthfeel, with loads of black fruits, licorice, subtle smoke and earth. This is a lovely, sexy, opulent style of wine to drink over the next 4–5 years.

Deep ruby. Complex scents of cherry, blackcurrant, violet and licorice, with slow-building smokiness and a strong vanilla nuance. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering juicy black and blue fruit flavors and notes of mocha and candied flowers. Shows very good energy on the broad, sweet finish, which leaves behind notes of anise and cherry liqueur.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015
Produced with a blend of 88% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 Dehesa de los Canónigos displays an exuberant, perfumed nose with floral notes and nicely-integrated oak. I was surprised to read in the technical sheet that the wine matured in American barrels for 15 months, yet it didn’t have any coconut or vanilla aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and good acidity, balanced, approachable and with persistent, tasty flavors. 160,000 bottles.

    2005 / 750 ml. | Item#26451

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Feb 2008
The 2005 Dominio de Atauta was aged in French oak, 20% new. Purple-colored, it offers an alluring array of mineral, black cherry, blackberry, and blueberry pie scents. This leads to a structured, balanced, tight wine that will require 6–8 years of cellaring. All the components are present but patience will be required. In short, this is not a wine for those unable to delay gratification. This is a true vins de garde that will require much patience but in the end, it will be rewarded.
    ST9090 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Sep/Oct 2007
Bright red. Spicy red fruit aromas offer impressive clarity and a variety of floral and mineral qualities. Laid-back redcurrant and cherry flavors are deep and focused, with lightly chewy tannins adding grip. Finishes with a dried cherry quality, racy minerality and impressive persistence.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2009
A dense, rich texture carries dark flavors of coffee, blackberry, tar and game in this red. A bit austere, but has focus and detail, with good typicity in the smoky, gamy character. Best from 2010 through 2016.

Inky purple. Seductive, spice-laced aromas of red berries and fresh flowers are complicated by mineral and anise nuances; smells like a ripe pinot noir. Bright cherry and raspberry flavors show very good clarity and pick up smoke and rose pastille nuances with aeration. Becomes sweeter and deeper on the long, sappy finish, which is shaped by velvety tannins that meld smoothly with the wine’s fruit.

I’ve loved this wine in the past and the 2013, a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 12 months in French oak, is stunning, simply over-delivering in so many different ways. This wine, which offers up copious quantities, of blueberry, black raspberry and black currant fruit, licorice, graphite and meaty notes, offers fabulous aromatics, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful, pure texture and a long, heady finish with subtle oak. What’s amazing is the French oak is all two-year-old, super-expensive Darnajou barrels. For $20 this is another amazing offering from Spain and from importer Eric Solomon.

The current vintage for the crianza is 2012. The 2012 Crianza, from a dry vintage, resulted much fresher than expected, fresher than 2009 and 2011 in fact. The vines are dry-farmed and were planted some 22 years ago, and you might say they have matured by now. The approximate mixture of grapes in their vineyards is mostly Tempranillo with some 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec, and it’s more or less the blend in this wine. The Cabernet works well, providing finesse and some acidity to the Tempranillo. Merlot does not work that well, and they are regrafting it to Cabernet and Malbec, so in future vintages there will be less of it. The wine matured in 20% new French oak barrels for some 20 months. There are no traces of the barriques and the nose took me to the Riberas of yesteryear, with some subtle rusticity; it’s ripe without excess and there’s good balance between fruit, spices and perhaps something earthy. The palate is extremely balanced, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, tasty, approachable and long. This could very well be the best crianza ever produced at Monasterio. This has to be one of the bargains of the vintage in Ribera, given the quality it delivers. 175,000 bottles produced.

A crisp red with plum, berry and mineral aromas and flavors. Full body, dense center palate and a minerally aftertaste. Fresh and bright. Drink now.

Deep ruby. Pungent cherry pit, raspberry and spicecake aromas are complemented by Asian spices, woodsmoke and minerals. Succulent and expansive on the palate, offering sappy red berry liqueur and floral flavors and a subtle licorice pastille quality. Concentrated yet vibrant and precise, finishing with excellent clarity, velvety tannins and excellent tenacity.

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2017
The wonderful 2013 Crianza from Hacienda Monasterio is one of the great successes from a challenging vintage that resulted in a heterogeneous collection of wines, where you can find the best and the worst. 2013 was a shorter vintage and they didn’t do a Reserva or Reserva Especial that year, so the very best grapes from their estate vineyards went into this Crianza. In fact, they sold 40% of their production in bulk. The final blend was 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and they didn’t use any Merlot this year. It’s a very precise vintage, with symmetry and a chiseled mouthfeel coupled with very good acidity, a little higher than in 2014 and with half a degree less of alcohol. The Monasterio vineyards are south-facing, the warmer exposure in the northern hemisphere, so they have an advantage in cooler years such as this 2013. Since 2012, the vineyards are organically certified, even if they have always been worked that way; the only difference is that they are now officially certified. The fruit is red rather than black and the tannins are super fine and elegant, providing for that laser-cut precision. This is clearly among the best wines from the vintage. In a way it reminded me of the 1996. The severe selection resulted into 134,560 bottles, way below the average, and it really paid off. Bravo!

Opaque ruby. Deeply perfumed aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, floral pastilles and smoky minerals, with hints of cured tobacco and vanilla in the background. Seamless and appealingly sweet, offering energetic red berry and cola flavors and a touch of five-spice powder on the back half. Gains weight with air and finishes on a smoky note, with sneaky tannins adding shape.

Inky ruby. Pungent aromas of black raspberry, cherry pit, cola and Indian spices, with a zesty mineral overtone. Juicy, concentrated and focused, with fresh red berry and bitter cherry flavors showing a cool restraint. Closes on a gently tannic note, with building spiciness, strong mineral cut and very good persistence.
