Oregon is most famous for its Pinot Noirs, the wine that put Oregon on the map. Thanks in part to this grape, the number of Oregon’s wineries increased from 5 in 1970 to 453 in 2009
The majority of Oregon wine production is centered in the Willamette Valley AVA, around and south of Portland. Other AVAs of consequence to the south are Red Hill Douglas County, Rogue Valley and Applegate Valley, and, in eastern Oregon, bordering Idaho, the Snake River Valley, with a more continental climate. Pinot Noir is, by far, the most planted and successful varietal, followed by Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Syrah.
