Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 / 750 ml.

Item#: 32845

SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2012
This is gorgeously vibrant and grapey, with good cut to the luscious dark fruit and cedar flavors that are flanked by zesty acidity and tannins. A touch brooding midpalate, with a minerally rush and a finish of slate and iron. Best from 2016 through 2036.
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2012
A classic Fonseca, rich and powerful, with just an extra edge of weight from the vintage. It has a dry character, a tannic edge that gives great promise, but the open-hearted fruit is all there. A wonderfully intense wine for aging.
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2011
The voluptuous 2009 vintage seems to play right into Fonseca’s house style, creating a cool, concentrated wine. There’s a schisty grip of tannins and a fine cut of acidity to balance chewy blueberry jam flavors. Darker notes of roasted black cherries and brighter strawberry layer detail into the finish. A delicious young Porto, this will probably be at its peak 20 years from the vintage.

Portugal is most famous (and justifiably so) for its Port wines, fortified wines that are typically sweet and often served with dessert. Port wines come in many styles such as Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, etc, and are classified by how they were produced.

Besides Port, however, Portugal is also one of the fastest-rising wine countries in the world (as far as quality and production) when it comes to table wines. You'll find some unbelievable values in Portuguese table wines, with grapes like Touriga Nacional at the forefront.

Dark and dense, with fig bread, baker’s chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060. 1,000 cases imported.
RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Jul 2019
The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first impression of moderation, there is plenty of power here. As it got some aeration, it showed nothing but power and closed down fairly hard. The combination of great fruit and fine structure makes this a potentially great Fonseca, but right now it is obviously immature and not showing everything it has. I’d recommend some patience here.

Lots of ripe fruit here with raisins and wet earth that turn to violets and hot stones. Full-bodied, tannic and powerful with fantastic grip and intensity. Grabs you. Impressive. Drink in 2025.
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2018
This leads in with bramble, spearmint and blueberry notes, with the energy extending through the core of dark plum, blackberry and fig fruit. The finish features a strong graphite spine, allowing this to draw deep water, but this remains stylish in feel overall. The definition of suave. Best from 2030 through 2055. 4,900 cases made, 1,100 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
WE9797 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2018
This bottling brings together a fine structure with great fruit to give a luscious wine that is also destined for long-term aging. With its ripe berry flavors sustained by some acidity, this is already balanced. Drink from 2028.
RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Jul 2018
The 2016 Vintage Port is a field blend that was not quite bottled when seen (set for a week later), but it was the final blend. It was aged for 20 months in wood and comes in with 99 grams of residual sugar. This Fonseca is remarkably expressive, lifted and gloriously fresh. It has good concentration but some years have had more and seemed sexier. However, the most notable feature is the structure. It is very impressive in structure, that classic Port power and firmness coming to the fore and overshadowing the rest at the moment. This is very tight and very unevolved. Don’t even think of buying it if you aren’t prepared to cellar it. The 2030 start date that I have will not be even close to late enough if you want harmony and complexity. To me, this is the best of the three 2016s from the Fladgate Group this issue (Croft and Taylor being the other two), thanks to its pure intensity, but time will tell if it becomes as sexy as I’m sure Taylor’s will be. In the meanwhile, Fonseca looks like one of the greats of this vintage.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2018
The 2016 Fonseca Vintage Port began to be picked on 21 September at their Panascal vineyard, their Quinta do Cruzeira vineyard not picked until 6 October. It is deep, almost inky in colour. The bouquet is very intense with luscious black fruit laced with embers, clove and hints of bay leaf. There is wonderful purity here and a broodiness that suggests you’d better be patient. The palate is sweet and lively on the entry with some gorgeous ginger and curry leaf notes littered over the compact black fruit. There is wonderful density to this Fonseca. It is like a coiled spring with so much energy towards the finish that you just know this will be a long-term prospect. Superb. Production is 4,900 cases.

Fonseca Vintage Port 2003 / 750 ml.

2003 / 750 ml.

Item #: 21564

ST9797 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2006
Saturated deep ruby. Brooding, reticent nose of cassis and kirsch; there’s nothing cooked about this one! Then massive, sweet and superrich in the mouth; explodes with exotic ripeness. Intriguing note of graphite. This coats every nook and cranny of the palate and clings and builds on the back end in a way that no other wine of this vintage can match. Huge, sexy and wonderfully lush Fonseca, built for the long haul. As impressive as the best 2000s, and, along with the Quinta do Noval Nacional, is an early candidate for port of the 2003 vintage.
WE9797 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2005
Fonseca vintage Ports are always among the most attractive and long-lived. This 2003 conforms magnificently to that model. It is structured, rich, powerful and opulent. There are cassis and black fig flavors, as well as sweet tannins. It is delicious already, and will remain delicious throughout its long life.
RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2005
Sporting an opaque, black-colored robe with dark purple trim, the 2003 Fonseca Vintage Port exhibits a nose of profound depth. Its sweet black mass of dark fruit and spice aromas leads to a character of immense depth, richness, and weight. Full-bodied, viscous, and almost impenetrable, this dense, backward port is powerful and exceptionally long in the finish. Possibly the most masculine Fonseca I’ve ever encountered, it coats the taster’s palate with licorice, jammy black fruits, and notes of chocolate that last for over a minute. This blockbuster will require at least three decades to fully blossom. Anticipated maturity: 2035–2060.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2006
Lots of grape and raisin on the nose. Full-bodied, chewy and lightly sweet. Serious concentration, with lots of grip on the finish. Just what to expect from a young Vintage port. Best after 2012.
WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2005
This is a beauty right now. Violet in color, scent and texture, Fonseca uses all the plumpness of the vintage to best advantage. It glistens with freshness, with long, dark fruit flavors held in place almost invisibly by the persistence of tannin. The schisty scent of smoke off broken rock gives the structure its electricity, and, with the freshness of the fruit, will sustain the wine for decades. Drink 2028–2043.

Fresh and bright in feel, with a nice mix of kirsch and plum notes, lined with a red licorice hint and backed by red teak and hazelnut husk accents. Drink now. 2,400 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2018
Shows a slightly darker and richer profile than most of its peers, with fig, plum cake, dark licorice and toasted black sesame notes rolling through. Slightly gutsy, offering a brambly edged finish. A muscular tawny. Drink now. 3,000 cases made, 2,400 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2012
Refined, with bright flavors of dried berry, plum compote and cherry tart that are long and lush. Very creamy on the finish, which features chocolate mousse. Drink now. 6,000 cases imported.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2012
In the full Fonseca style, this aged tawny shows both rich fruit and a more serious wood-aged character. Good acidity follows the sweet initial taste, broadening into ripe flavors of nut, plum jelly, and a final crisp acidity.

Intense, powerful and complex, this features heady aromas and flavors of toffee, marzipan, butterscotch and chocolate. Notes of mocha and French roast chime in as well, with a long, glorious finish of dried white fruits and spice. Drink now. 2,000 cases imported.
SP92+9291 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2023
A gentle style, with hints of praline and hazelnut mixed with lightly mulled peach and white cherry fruit. Reveals a wood spice twinge on the finish. Drink now. 2,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2015
The NV 20 Year Old Tawny was bottled with a bar top cork in 2013. It comes in at 111.6 grams per liter of residual sugar. A big mouthful, this is a 20 that first coats the palate and then ends with silky texture and concentrated flavor. Very graceful, it is not as impressive in terms of mid-palate density, but it is more than respectable. It shows fine complexity, appropriate to its age category. The finish seals the deal, more lingering and gripping than I expected from the first taste. It is another delicious Tawny from the Taylor Fladgate group this issue, so dig in.

Bin 27 remains one of the most reliably delicious Ruby reserves, presenting the plump Fonseca style in a wine that’s remarkably easy to drink. Its scent of purple plums emanates from a luscious texture, the wine’s freshness firmed up by schist tannins. Enjoy a glass with crusty peasant bread and meltingly ripe Queijo Serra da Estrela.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2012
Fresh and grapey, with plenty of grip and power behind dark plum, chocolate and berry flavors that feature slate and pepper notes. Drink now through 2020. (Kim Marcus)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2023
Very expressive, with generous plum, blueberry and açaí berry flavors bursting forth. Shows a polished structure, with a nice jolt of black licorice on the finish. Tasty. Drink now. 23,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 1999
David Guimaraens, who makes the wines for both Taylor and Fonseca, blends Bin 27 to share the deep richness and fruitiness of a big, round Fonseca Vintage. With all its elements beautifully integrated, the wine comes across as fresh plum and figgy fruit, round and lovely tight in the middle as Fonseca Portos are blended to be. This generous wine consistently shows at the top of the proprietary ruby class.
WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2011
Full, rich and fruity wine, enticingly aromatic, with strawberry fruits and an easy, just tannic edge. The wine is soft, ripe, the fruits finely balanced with acidity.
WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2018
This familiar brand exhibits the lush Fonseca style. Tannins are encased in generous red fruits, giving a wine that is smooth with just a touch of structure. This perfumed wine is ready to drink.
