Portugal is most famous (and justifiably so) for its Port wines, fortified wines that are typically sweet and often served with dessert. Port wines come in many styles such as Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, etc, and are classified by how they were produced.

Besides Port, however, Portugal is also one of the fastest-rising wine countries in the world (as far as quality and production) when it comes to table wines. You'll find some unbelievable values in Portuguese table wines, with grapes like Touriga Nacional at the forefront.

Date, fig and mulled plum fruit flavors form this broad and juicy core. Cinnamon, black tea and hazelnut notes fill in the background. Shows some power, with the cut and drive for balance. Drink now. 30,000 cases made, 9,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2014
The wine is rich, ripe and fruity with good acidity as well as a bite of spirit and old-wood aging. It is well balanced, keeping the freshness of a 10-Year-Old while also showing good signs of its wood aging. Just what a 10-Year-Old should be.
WS8787 pts. - Wine & Spirits - October 1, 2004
Fruit-leather flavors of dried apricot combine with a sweeter tone, like baba au rhum. this is a dark tones, pleasantly woody wine for dried fruit or nuts.

SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019
Lush and inviting, with waves of cassis, melted red licorice, plum preserves and boysenberry reduction coursing through, carried by a velvety structure that lets this flow wonderfully. Flashes of apple wood and tar score the finish, which ends with authoritative cut. This is serious. Best from 2035 through 2055. 5,250 cases made, 937 cases imported.
JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, May 6, 2019
Wow! Amazing aromas of crushed blackberry and blueberry, stems and rose petal. Entrancing. Full-bodied, very tight and powerful with ultra-fine tannins. Intense richness of crushed berries, chocolate, hazelnut and coffee. 5,250 cases. Try after 2026.
RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Jul 2019
The 2017 Vintage Port is a blend of 35% Touriga Nacional, 47% Touriga Franca and various others, including a blend from old vines. It comes in with 113 grams of residual sugar. It was bottled about a month before this tasting, but the just-bottled sample was not really ready. This is a pre-bottling sample instead. One of the more aromatic ports here, this is laced with cistus and eucalyptus. Lush in texture and concentrated, it was actually showing well at the time of this tasting — notwithstanding some power and pop. The more it aired out, though, the more power it showed. Even so, this remains a rather refined and suave Graham’s. I’d call it subtly sexy. It does put on weight with some aeration, though, and there is that muscle underneath, so don’t dive in too soon. There were 5,250 cases produced.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2019
The 2017 Graham’s Vintage Port was picked from August 28 at Malvedos, though production is one-third less than the previous year. Here the Touriga Franca was particularly early ripening. It has an expressive nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, fig jam, dates and touches of clove, aromatics that are very seductive if perhaps just missing the intellectual capacity of the Dow’s. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins, a gorgeous Graham’s with hints of espresso and cloves that tincture the multi-layered fruit that veers towards black rather than red towards the finish that fans out without a care in the world. This is perhaps one of the more flamboyant Vintage Ports that is likely to drink earlier than the Dow’s, yet that takes nothing away from what is a beautifully crafted Graham’s. Total production is 5,250 cases.

WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2011
A dry wine, firmly tannic, although also with acidity and black currant fruit. Spices and licorice add interest, while the tannins finish this attractive wine.
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2019
The NV Six Grapes Reserve Port is a blend of typical grapes aged in used wood for up to three years. It comes in with 114 grams per liter of residual sugar and was bottled with a bar-top cork in August 2018. In the Symington lineup this issue, this iconic brand is the polar opposite of the Dow. In comparison, the Dow is rounder and bigger but also a bit flatter and with less well-defined fruit, while this is more lifted and fresher, with better focus and more intensity on the finish. It has a beautiful expression of fruit as well. I’ve seen it available on the street for a lot less than that “suggested” release price, so don’t hesitate to look around.
SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2010
Lots of sweet dark plum and sweet cherry flavors dominate, with plenty of milk chocolate. Clean and balanced on the straightforward finish. Drink now. 30,000 cases made.

The Port, with its luscious texture and black fruits, is impressive and dense. Black fruits are given richness and spice by the spirit and the raisin flavors. With its light structure, it is ready to drink. (Roger Voss)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2022
Inviting, with plum cake and steeped raisin and plum notes laced with licorice snap and fruitcake accents. There’s a solid spine for support, but this is approachable now. Try decanting or even giving a touch more time in the cellar. Drink now through 2026. 50,000 cases made, 25,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/22
A fresh, schist-driven LBV, this wine’s tannins are accommodating in their softness, but still buzzing with mineral tension and energy. The cherry fruit coasts past the tannins, sweet and pleasing with the acidity of sheep’s milk cheeses.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Aug 2022
The 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a field blend bottled in 2022 with a bar-top cork and 113 grams per liter of residual sugar after six years in cask. (There will be no 2016 Graham’s LBV.) Elegant in the mid-palate (unlike its sibling, the Dow’s), this also has good structure, but it is a much better balanced wine. The big fruit of this fine vintage shines through, rendering this rather delicious. This has persistence and focus, plus all that tasty fruit. You can’t go wrong. (Mark Squires)

This offers a distilled plum and boysenberry essence, with a racy feel, as spearmint and graphite notes drive through. As the finish kicks in, this turns toward the dark side, with ganache, charcoal and tar elements. Has the showy ripeness of the vintage but is backed by a decidedly dry feel on the finish, imparting a sense of precision despite the heft. Best from 2030 through 2055. 6,325 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
WE9797 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2018
This finely structured wine is powered by fine tannins and rich fruits. A touch of acidity comes through the rich berry flavors and the concentration of the dark tannins. This wine will certainly age, don’t drink before 2028.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Jul 2018
The 2016 Vintage Port is a blend of 37% Touriga Nacional, 42% Touriga Franca and various others. It comes in with 115 grams of residual sugar. A bit bigger than Dow’s this year, this is more intense as well. The better wine of these two benchmarks seems to be this Graham’s. Tight on the finish, aromatic and very flavorful, this actually opens rather well and shows off its lovely fruit. The Dow’s will be approachable a bit earlier, perhaps, and this may reward aging even more. As always, Graham’s is wonderfully delicious. That’s one hallmark of the house. I’m not sure this is a truly great Graham’s, but at the moment, it is enticing, with plenty of potential for improvement. There were 6,325 cases produced, plus some bottles in other formats.

SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2018
Broad in feel and dark in profile, with walnut and hazelnut notes followed by flavors of brown bread, dried fig, bitter orange, singed almond and juniper. A lovely flash of green tea adds sparkle and detail on the finish, but this stays reliant on its bass line throughout. Drink now. 1,200 cases made, 550 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2007
Remarkably, this is able to show age and long cask aging, but the flavor is still here: figs and honey, balanced out with burnt caramel aged acidity and a rich (but not sweet) finish. Excellent, top quality aged tawny.
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
Fully mature, the 30-year blend offers cool spicy satisfaction. Its flavors taste of a range of fruits in marmalade, from candied orange zest to kumquats with their peels. Toasty and bright, apricot-rich, this wine’s bittersweet finish will match a savory almont tart.

Earthy rather than fruity, this is all about umami, its cool cellar tones layering dark mushroom and savory black bean flavors over papaya. It lasts with intriguing complexity that would work with a range of umami-rich foods, like seafood in an XO sauce.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2018
Lovely, with date and persimmon notes that are melded seamlessly, picking up light bitter orange, ginger and green tea accents along the way. Echoes of sweet golden raisin and hazelnut linger on the finish, which is polished and long. A beauty. Drink now. 15,000 cases made, 4,800 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2013
A complex and full-bore tawny, with deep, intense flavors of orange cream, glazed apricot, baked peach and roasted pineapple that are balanced by concentrated chocolate and toffee notes. The bright finish is filled with spice and supported by fresh acidity. Drink now. 25,000 cases made.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2006
This is a hugely dry, burnt style, very concentrated. The licorice and bitter coffee flavors are dense, layered and well balanced with the acidity. A serious wine that demands attention.
WS8686 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2000
Buttery, caramel flan flavors enrich this mature, toasty tawny. It finishes warm, with a silky custard softness rather than grip. Serve with a walnut or almond tart.
