Andes Plateau Cota 500 Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 / 750 ml.

Item#: 59636

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cota 500 comes from the Maule Andes and was aged for 10 months in used barrels. A mild purple hue, the nose features rose and sweet and sour cherry with gentle hints of pyrazine and cinnamon. In the mouth it’s dry and slightly tannic with a finely grained, almost chalky texture and juicy finish. An unusual style for Chile that will improve in the bottle. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Apr 2023
The 2021 Cota 500 Cabernet Sauvignon was produced with grapes from 25-year-old vines at the feet of the Andes in Maule (from the same place as the Chardonnay), on volcanic soils with stones and a little clay. It fermented destemmed with indigenous yeasts and matured in 1,200-liter French oak foudres and concrete eggs for 10 to 12 months. It has 13.6% alcohol, a pH of 3.5 and good acidity. It has a nose of red fruit and lots of herbs and a notable absence of pyrazines, and it has very good acidity and freshness in the palate with abundant fine-grained tannins. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Region / Valle Central

View more wines from Valle Central

Valle Central is Chile's most famous and most productive wine region. Located on the other side of the Andes from Argentina's Mendoza wine region, Valle Central is producing outstanding examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Chardonnay, and other grapes. Many of these wines are excellent values when compared to wines of similar quality from other parts of the world.

Country / Chile

View more wines from Chile

With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

Floral nose with dark cherries, damson and licorice spices. Lots of fruit on the medium-bodied palate with a plump mid-palate and a simple but intense fruity finish. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc and 20% petite sirah. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)

Spicy and fresh nose with some olives, cassis and a splash of dark chocolate. The medium- to full-bodied palate is laden with powdery tannins before a savory, juicy finish. A tad saline, too. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)

The 2021 Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon was produced with grapes from the Puente Alto and Pirque and has 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Syrah and 1% Carmenere blended in. It has 14.5% alcohol, good freshness and integrated oak after 16 months in French barrels and 5,000-liter Italian oak vats from Piamonte. This is again a textbook Cabernet from Maipo, juicy, crunchy, fresh, with the grainy tannins from the variety and the stony soils. There’s purity; it’s clean and young, a little grapey. 780,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Well-done in a medium-bodied style, with fresh and inviting raspberry and blackberry flavors, plus subtle tea leaf and warm spice notes that arrive on a finish marked by slightly chalky tannins. Drink now. 65,000 cases made, 15,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

Lots of red fruit here with redcurrants, cherries and currant leaves. Juicy, medium-bodied palate with fresh acidity and a strawberry-driven finish. Pristine, simple and very drinkable. Nice fruit and nothing is overdone. Oak-free. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Peralillo, Colchagua. Dark garnet red in color. The aromas include blackcurrant and other fruit with a spicy expression over a vanilla layer. In the mouth, it’s simple and fruity with a polished palate and a lingering vanilla finish. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

While inviting for its fresh and lively style, with juicy berry and cherry flavors and subtle dried herb shadings, this is a little shy in dimension. Drink now. 270,000 cases made, 50,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)
