The purity of fruit to this is really attractive with blue fruit, blackberries and flowers on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with fine tannins, a solid core of fruit and a long, attractive finish. Drink in 2022 and onwards.

Readers looking for a beautiful Bordeaux that’s not going to break the bank should check out the 2018 Château D’Auguilhe. Coming from the cooler Castillon region to the east of Saint-Emilion, this beauty offers a terrific perfume of ripe black raspberries, cherries, roasted herbs, sweet mulch, and spring flowers. It has a fresh, crunchy quality to its fruit, nicely integrated acidity, ripe yet present tannins, and the class to keep for 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Where It's From

Region / Bordeaux

View more wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2018 Duhart-Milon is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. With 14% alcohol, it has a deep garnet-purple color and a seductively ripe, opulent nose of plum preserves, blackberry pie and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of spice cake, potpourri, sandalwood and eucalyptus oil. Medium-bodied, it is jam-packed with rich, spicy black fruit preserves, with floral accents and a velvety texture, finishing long and fragrant. So. Good. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

This is packed with succulent blackberry and black currant fruit, along with mulling spice, sweet tobacco, licorice root and alder notes. Youthfully jumbled, but the pieces are there, the mouthfeel is alluring and the length is there for sure. For the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2036. This well-structured wine shows both richness and tension. Black-currant fruitiness is balanced by a mineral texture that gives the wine a taut, structured edge that contrasts with the juicy fruits. This suggests the wine will age well. Drink from 2026. (Roger Voss)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Picque-Caillou leaps from the glass with bold notes of blackcurrant cordial, blueberry pie and preserved plums with hints of damp soil, truffles and camphor. Full-bodied, it gives mouth-filling black fruits with loads of minty sparks and a firm, chewy frame, finishing long and earthy. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

The 2018 Cantenac Brown is fabulous. Dark rich and expansive, the 2018 wraps around the palate with stunning depth. Dark red/black fruit, iron, cedar, chocolate, dried herbs and a whole range of earthy notes are pushed forward as this ample Margaux shows off its considerable allure. The 2018 is a big, rich wine. Give it at least a few years to fully come together.
RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2018 Cantenac Brown has a medium to deep garnet-purple color, wafting gently out of the glass with fragrant scents of redcurrant jelly, Morello cherries, plum preserves and fresh blackcurrants, plus suggestions of red roses, cedar chest and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate (13.5% declared alcohol) has a sturdy frame of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the delicately styled red and black fruit flavors, finishing savory.

Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 19038

WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
This wine offers rich tannins and dense black fruits in equal proportions. The structure, with the dry core, shows great promise and the wine is definitely worth aging. Drink from 2024.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021
The 2018 La Cardonne was tasted twice, one bottle a little muted but showing promise on the finish. The second was given more aeration and that was repaid. It offers attractive blackberry, briar, cedar, and light marine aromas on a well-defined nose that is very focused and intense. The fresh, vibrant palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-pitched acidity and an almost citrus-like finish. Very harmonious and silky-smooth in texture. This is an outstanding Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. Bravo! (Neal Martin)

Aromas of blackberry, plum, cocoa, iodine, clove and graphite. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Tightly wound and mineral at the moment, with dusty gravel and graphite notes, yet with focus and precision. Such balance and harmony for the vintage. Try from 2025.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021
The top wine, the 2018 Château D’Issan is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot that spent 18 months in 50% new French oak. It offers a beautiful, singular bouquet of blackcurrants, new leather, smoked tobacco, scorched earth, and camphor. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, seamless Margaux with wonderful tannins, beautifully integrated acidity, and just a flawlessly balanced, elegant, layered style that’s going to evolve for 20–25 years. It’s one classy 2018 that has loads to love. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Apr 2019
The 2018 D’Issan is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, aging in 50% new and 50% second year barrels for an estimated 18 months. With 13.97% alcohol and a deep garnet-purple color, it features baked berries, warm cherries and cassis with spice box and fragrant earth plus tea hints. Medium to full-bodied, it has a great core of muscular fruit with firm, fine-grained tannins, with nice freshness, finishing layered with mineral notions.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021
The 2018 d’Issan is a potent, backward wine that is going to need a number of years to come into its own. Dark and brooding, with serious intensity, the 2018 shows off real depth in its blue/purplish fruit, chocolate, spice, smoke and leather flavors. The tannins are imposing today, but, then again, everything about the 2018 feels large in scale. I can’t wait to see how the 2018 ages.
