Chateau Ferrand Pomerol 2020 / 750 ml.

Item#: 61916

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, May 14, 2023
This shows aromas of plums and blueberries with milk chocolate, hazelnuts and crushed violets. Some crushed stones, too. Full-bodied with firm tannins that continue to build up throughout the palate. Deep core of ripe black and blue fruit. Chewy and tight, this needs some time to settle together. Lingering finish with hints of blue flowers. Try after 2025. (James Suckling)

Where It's From

Region / Bordeaux

View more wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Currants, black cherries, and spices. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine and polished tannins and an extremely long, flavorful finish. Give this three or four years to come together, but lovely structure. Best ever? (James Suckling)

An impressive Margaux, the 2020 Château La Tour De Bessan is loaded with red and black fruits as well as spicy oak, lead pencil, and violets, with medium-bodied richness, terrific overall balance, integrated tannins, and a solid mid-palate, it should certainly be an outstanding wine and offer 10–15 years or more of prime drinking. I always love this wine, and the 2020 Château Barde-Haut is a quintessential Saint-Emilion revealing a deep ruby/purple hue, awesome notes of red plum, cherries, tobacco leaf, and chalky earth, full-bodied richness, bright acidity, and fine tannins. A gorgeous wine, it will benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Aromas of black and blue fruit, toasted spices, walnut and dark chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied with a juicy character and firm, polished tannins which build on the palate. Well-balanced, structured and compact with velvety texture and hints of spices and bark to close. Lingering finish. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)

The 2020 Barde-Haut is just as compelling it was from barrel. Blueberry jam, crème de cassis, hard candy, spice, new leather and lavender infuse the 2020 with exotic beauty. Soft contours and silky tannins add to its immediacy. Bright acids lend vibrancy to play off all the natural opulence. The 2020 is a fine vintage of Barde-Haut, one of the best in recent memory. The intensely saline finish alone is a thing of beauty. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2020 Barde-Haut unwinds in the glass with aromas of blackberries, cassis and blueberries mingled with hints of violets and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a deep core of ripe but lively fruit, powdery tannins and a floral finish, it’s the usual blend of more or less 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc (the latter increasingly deriving from massal selections taken at Clos l’Eglise). This is very fine and racy with refined tannins that are long and really precise. It’s medium-bodied with a lovely, creamy texture. Really long and bright.

The 2020 Le Carillon D’Angélus bring things up a notch, offering wonderful purity of fruit as well as notes black cherries, cassis, graphite, and leafy herbs. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has wonderful tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a clean, lengthy finish. It’s a beautiful wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Le Carillon d’Angélus (a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) rocks up with ready-to-go scents of plum preserves, blackberry pie and mulberries, plus hints of spice cake, aniseed and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness and an approachable, soft texture framing the crunchy black fruits, finishing long and savory. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

A real “wow” wine, the 2020 Clos L’Eglise sports deep ruby hue as well as an absolutely stunning bouquet of black cherries, red plums, damp earth, chocolate, truffle, and lead pencil. This deep, full-bodied, concentrated, beauty has that classic Pomerol opulence and richness paired with an incredible sense of elegance. The tannins are perfectly ripe as well. Give bottles just 4–5 years, and it’s going to age beautifully. This is the finest wine I’ve tasted from the Garcin-Lévêque family, surpassing both the 2009 and 2016. Don’t miss it. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This has a pretty nose of chocolate, praline, blueberries, lavender and bramble berries. It’s medium-bodied with firm, compact tannins. Firm and focused with an enticing bitter chocolate character throughout. Some smoked wood. Intense and tightly wound. Opens on the palate. Try in 2027. (James Suckling)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2020 Clos L’Eglise is not as showy as it was from barrel, perhaps because of its recent bottling. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and rose petal are all laced together. En primeur, Clos L’Eglise was quite powerful, but I see more finesse today. Even so, this is one of the most concentrated Clos L’Eglises ever, since surpassed by the 2022, though! (Antonio Galloni)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Apr 2023
Aromas of ripe plums and raspberries mingled with hints of rose petals and toasty new oak preface the 2020 Clos l’Eglise, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping wine with a broad attack that segues into a fleshy core of fruit, with powdery extract asserting itself on the youthfully chewy finish. I loved the 2020 Château Grand Mayne. This medium to full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly satisfying Saint-Emilion offers up ample mulled red and black fruits, some loamy earth, iron, and dried flower nuances, ripe tannins, and plenty of mid-palate depth. I still think the 2015 is the top vintage, but this is clearly in the same league as the 2015, 2018, and 2019, and it’s going to drink brilliantly over the coming 15–20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th May 2021
Opaque purple-black in color, the 2020 Grand Mayne slowly unfurls in the glass to reveal gorgeous notions of ripe black plums, dark chocolate-covered cherries and blackberry pie, plus hints of licorice, cracked black pepper and unsmoked cigars with a touch of tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of rich black fruits, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and beautifully perfumed. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
