Where It's From

Region / Bordeaux

View more wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

From an estate managed by Dany Rolland, this wine is ripe, dense and layered with black fruits. It is rich in feel from firm tannins, which will lend to its longevity. Drink from 2024.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2020
The 2017 Le Bon Pasteur is really gorgeous. Sweet floral and spices give the 2017 tons of allure. Just as inviting on the palate, the 2017 is silky, mid-weight and gracious, with terrific purity of fruit and impeccable balance. This is a wine of restraint, class and total finesse. The persistent, aromatically intense finish is a thing of beauty. Wow — this is one of the best vintages I have tasted here.

The 2017 Troplong Mondot is stunning, just as it was en primeur. Rich and ample, yet endowed with striking energy as well, the 2017 is the first vintage made by new CEO Aymeric de Gironde and consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos. The 2017 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. All of the power that is typical of this site is evident, it seems to come so naturally, and yet picking earlier and then using a lighter hand in the cellar yielded a Troplong of uncommon energy and vibrancy. The 2017 has been nothing short of thrilling on the four occasions I have tasted it from bottle so far. What a wine!
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - February 26, 2020
The 2017 Chateau Troplong Mondot continues in the new style of this estate and is based on 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc from healthy yields of 48 hectoliters per hectare. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a stunning perfume of creme de cassis, black raspberries, white chocolate, crushed flowers, and a terrific sense of minerality. Flawlessly balanced, medium to full-bodied, and nicely concentrated, it shows the more elegant, classical style of the vintage beautifully. It has the texture and balance to drink brilliantly today yet will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for two decades or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2017 Valandraud has turned out even better than I expected. It was magnificent in two separate tastings. Deep and sumptuous, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts intensity and power. Dark red cherry, red plum, chocolate, licorice and spice build as this explosive wine shows off its personality. There are only a few wines in 2017 that are truly exciting and viscerally thrilling. Valandraud is one of them. Don’t miss it!
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2020
This is ablaze with cassis, cherry preserve and blueberry reduction flavors that ripple with energy, inlaid with graphite, anise and Lapsang souchong tea notes. The long finish displays a luxurious feel, with a subtle underlay of chalky minerality. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2040. 2,125 cases made.

Chateau Pavie Macquin | Premier Grand Cru Classe 2017 / 750 ml.

Premier Grand Cru Classé
2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 54865

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Mar 2020
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Pavie Macquin comes charging out of the glass with exuberant scents of warm black cherries, blackberry pie and wild blueberry coulis plus hints of menthol, licorice, candied violets and charcuterie. Medium-bodied, the palate is an exercise in precision and poise, featuring a beautiful frame of wonderfully ripe, very fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long and multilayered. Simply stunning! The blend here is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 70% new.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/26/2020
Coming from a cool terroir located on the upper plateau, just behind Chateau Pavie, the 2017 Chateau Pavie Macquin checks in as a mix of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 16 months in 70% new French oak. This wine is always closed, tannic, and hard to understand in its youth, yet blossoms with 7–8 years of bottle age. The 2017 sports a deep, purple/ruby color as well as beautiful notes of black raspberries, cassis, huge minerality, white flowers, and loamy earth. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet silky and seamless on the palate, it doesn’t have the sheer weight and flesh of the 2015 and 2016 yet is flawlessly balanced, has terrific tannins, and a great finish. It will be drinkable with just 4–6 years of bottle age and cruise for 15–20 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2020
Features a delightfully pure aromatic burst of cassis and cool plum fruit leading off, followed by a rush of violet and lilac notes that add lift. Underneath, a subtle graphite edge injects sneaky length through the finish. Built on purity and cut. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2040. 4,833 cases made.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2020
The 2017 Pavie Macquin is a rich, deep and super-expressive wine with remarkable persistence. As always, Pavie Macquin is a potent Saint-Émilion, but the 2017 has terrific energy as well. In 2017, Pavie-Macquin is not as forthcoming in its youth as it can be, and is going to need a few years in bottle to truly come together. A bit of time in the glass brings out very pretty floral top notes and rich, sensual fruit that is such a signature of this site. Tasted three times.

There’s a slightly smoky edge to the nose with a wealth of ripe dark and red plums, as well as violets, blueberries and wet earth. The palate is very plush and smoothly arranged with a very attractive weave of ripe, supple tannin and a long, fresh and fleshy hold on the finish. The tannins are discreet but deceptively long here. It builds. Try from 2023. (James Suckling)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/26/2020
From a slightly larger vineyard covering 46 acres, the 2017 Chateau La Fleur-Petrus is a gorgeous wine that stays in the classic style of the vintage yet still packs plenty of oomph and textural richness. Based on 93% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a seamless, medium to full-bodied 2017 that has fantastic cassis and black raspberry fruits, lots of floral and spice nuances, subtle oak, and ripe, present, polished tannins. It doesn’t have the opulence of the 2015 and 2016, but it’s about as classy as they come. Four to five years of bottle age should put it in a sweet spot, and it will drink beautifully over the following 20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Mar 2020
A blend of 93% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2017 la Fleur-Petrus is a little youthfully reticent to begin, opening to offer glimpses at kirsch, black raspberries and warm plums plus nuances of potpourri, powdered cinnamon, dusty soil and dried lavender. Medium-bodied, the palate is finely knit and elegant with a firm frame of grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2020
At 46 acres, this is a large property for Pomerol, adjacent to Château Pétrus. This wine has great richness and acidity, conveying power, density and a hint of spice and perfume from the Cabernet Franc in the blend. Drink this wine from 2023. (Roger Voss)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2020
Ripe and warm in feel, featuring steeped plum, blackberry and fig notes carried by velvety but substantial tannins. Shows good cut, with notes of ganache and black tea driving the finish, ending with a second whoosh of fruit. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2038. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 3,600 cases made. (James Molesworth)
