Delectus Cabernet Sauvignon, Bear Crossing 2013 / 750 ml.

Item#: 46104

RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Mar 2016
I tasted three Cabernet Sauvignons from Delectus Winery. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Bear Crossing (305 cases) has notes of saddle leather, rich, super-concentrated blackberry fruit, striking density, richness, and a connoisseur’s backwardness and profound richness that will require some time to come around. The tannins are excruciatingly high, and this wine reminds me of some of the late 1960s and early 1970s vintages of famous Mayacamas from Mount Veeder when it was almost like Port in its extraction and richness. This wine needs a good 10 years and seems to have a high ceiling.

From the Producer

Solid dark ruby-red in appearance, the 2013 Bear Crossing has completely integrated notes of blackberry jam, wild sage and is profoundly concentrated. Very broad on the palate, the finish is dense, chewy and due to the sheer mass of extract. This may prove to be one of the longest-lived wines from Knights Valley in 2013.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

A wine of real density and power, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Padrone hits the palate with a rush of blackcurrant, lavender, mint, licorice, blood orange and scorched earth. Deep, virile and broad on the palate, the 2013 captures the natural structure of the vintage. Best of all, it should drink well with just a few more years in bottle.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Oct 2016
The 2013 Proprietary Red Padrone, the winery’s flagship wine, is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc aged 21 months in 100% new French oak prior to being bottle unfiltered. This wine exhibits an inky purple color, notes of graphite, blueberry, blackberry, a hint of cocoa and a dense, full-bodied super-rich mouthfeel with good acidity and strong, but well-integrated tannin. Give this wine 6–7 years and drink over the following 35–40.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Lazy Susan Ranch, also 100% Cabernet Sauvignon coming from clones 33 and 169 and slightly higher yields of 1.5 tons of fruit per acre, is an even smaller cuvée of 145 cases. The wine emerges from a different parcel of red Aiken iron-rich soils, as opposed to the volcanic tufa and fractured bedrock of its sibling. This wine offers loads of cedar wood, crème de cassis, licorice and forest floor in a full-bodied, opulent style. The fruit is beautifully pure, the oak well-integrated, and the wine gorgeous. It’s top, top-flight, clearly world-class and should drink well for 20–25 years.

Château Canon-La-Gaffelière Saint-Émilion

Premier Grand Cru Classé
2015 / 750 ml.

Item #: 43136

JS96+96–97 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, April 1, 2016
Very tight yet shows wonderful cream and lemon rind texture. Full and powerful with walnut and spice character. Linear and focused. 55% merlot, 37% cabernet franc and 8% cabernet sauvignon.
VN95+95–97 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2016
The 2015 Canon La Gaffelière is seriously impressive. Like all of Stephan von Neipperg’s wines in this vintage, the Canon La Gaffelière is endowed with considerable richness and a sense of vertical structure. The significant presence of Cabernet Franc gives the wine striking aromatic lift, which it very much needs. Mocha, red cherry jam and sweet floral notes give the 2015 its soaring perfume. This exceptionally beautiful Saint-Émilion is going to need time to fully come together, but it is super-impressive, even in the early going. The 2015 has been nothing short of magnificent on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. The presence of Cabernet Franc is felt in the wine’s strong aromatic signature.
SP94+94–97 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2016
Dark and winey, with currant paste and fig notes backed by slightly briary grip and an ample dose of toast. There’s good energy here and nice vivacity, despite the darker profile today, and this should easily round into form after the élevage.
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2018
This structured wine also offers juicy, elegant fruit. Full of black plums, spice from judicious wood aging and acidity, its core remains to develop. The wine needs to age so drink after 2024.
RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Apr 2016
The 2015 Canon la Gaffeliere is a blend of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 19 September and 6 October at 37 hl/ha and matured in 55% new oak barrels. It has another “cool” bouquet, a common thread among Comte Stephan Von Neipperg’s 2015s — very restrained at first, nicely focused and gradually revealing undergrowth and even a subtle charcoal scent (probably from the Cabernet Sauvignon). The palate is medium-bodied with black fruit laced with graphite and cedar, the Cabernet brothers really defining the character of this Saint Emilion and edging it towards say, more Figeac in style. This is a fascinating 2015, more cerebral than previous vintages that I have tasted over the years.
