A very attractive red now, with complexity and yummy drinkability. It’s medium-bodied with medium, round tannins that are fresh and more-ish. It’s dusty and lightly earthy with dark currants as well as tobacco. So much going on, in a subtle and refreshing way. 85% cabernet sauvignon, 10% petit verdot, and 5% malbec. Drink or hold.

Deep black-fruit flavors, moderate tannins and a sense of good density make this wine from one of Napa’s oldest producers impressive. Cloves, cedar, blackberries and a touch of anise combine for good complexity on the palate. Best from 2026–2032. (Jim Gordon)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Juicy and relatively open-knit, with a gush of blackberry, black cherry and plum compote flavors taking the lead, followed by hints of licorice and apple wood. Shows a nice racy edge through the finish. Drink now through 2033. 10,152 cases made. (James Molesworth)

The first wine in the progression that really speaks to the winery’s Rutherford roots, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Reserve is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec that boasts aromas of ripe cherries, accented by baking spices, subtle cedar notes and a hint of mint. It’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, showing off the silky, fine-grained tannins typical of the region, finishing long and softly dusty, with a hint of cocoa. (Joe Czerwinski)

This wine’s salted caramel scent has a smoky overlay, adorning red cherry and red plum accents, simple and lean, for a steak sandwich.

From the southern, cooler end of the valley, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville offers a vibrant, lively bouquet of blue fruits, sappy herbs, truffle, tobacco, and hints of gravelly earth. It brings plenty of richness on the palate and is medium to full-bodied, has nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful, cooler-climate, textured, balanced Cabernet that can be enjoyed today or cellared for upwards of two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Santa Ynez Valley) captures all the intensity of Cabernet from this part of Santa Barbara County in a cooler vintage that yielded wines built more on savory intensity rather than volume. Elegant and nuanced, the 2019 delivers the goods. A rush of red/purplish fruit, dried herbs, rose petal and mint builds into the persistent finish. (Antonio Galloni)

Very pure fruit this year with ripe raspberries and fresh currants throughout. Full-to medium-bodied with soft, polished tannins and bright, clean fruit. It’s really balanced and the finish and makes you want to drink it. Subtle and vivid fruit at the end. Yet, it can improve with age. Blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and petite verdot. Drink or hold.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/21/2021
Always a value, the 2019 California Red Wine is a juicy, up-front, undeniably delicious red with plenty of red, black, and blue fruits as well as graphite, leafy herbs, and chalky mineral nuances. Medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and seamless, it’s a no-brainer purchase to enjoy over the coming 8–10 years at a minimum. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Leviathan is a fabulous wine from Andy Erickson. Powerful and flamboyant, but somehow not overdone, the 2019 is packed with inky dark red fruit. Blood orange, spice and floral accents add just enough lift to keep things balanced. I very much like the energy here.

This full-bodied wine offers light leafy, flinty aromas and a rich texture carrying subtle Bosc pear, lime and thyme flavors. It’s rather big for the varietal and tastes relatively light in acidity. (Jim Gordon)
