VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a bold, juicy wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. Black cherry, mocha, new leather, licorice and bittersweet chocolate are all kicked up in this exuberant, flamboyant Cabernet. The 2019 is a superb edition for the Napa Valley bottling. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes racing out of the glass with bold notes of warm cassis, cedar and mulberries, plus wafts of dried mint, tobacco and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, soft and juicy in the mouth, it is packed with bright fruit, finishing long and lifted. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022
Lots of spicy, sappy herbs, sandalwood, and tobacco notes emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from Frank Family Vineyards. A classic, old-school-like expression of the variety, it has plenty of fruit, silky tannins, and lots of character. It’s well worth following over the coming 10–12 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

As fans know, Maya comes from a very special section of the estate vineyard, situated in the valley’s eastern foothills, below Pritchard Hill and in the above the Oakville floor, overlooking Screaming Eagle. The blend is two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Maya slowly unfurls to reveal a firework display of redcurrant preserves, kirsch, boysenberries and wild blueberries, followed by iron ore, red roses, cardamom, fallen leaves and crushed rocks, with a waft of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is stunningly graceful and refined, featuring exhilarating mineral sparks among the red and black fruits, finishing with so much brightness and energy. Breathtaking! (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

One of the finest wines in the vintage is the 2019 Maya Proprietary Red Wine, and red wine doesn’t get any better. The usual blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc, its deep purple hue is followed by an incredible bouquet of blackcurrants, tobacco, dark chocolate, and crushed stone, which turns more floral, pretty, and complex with time in the glass. Full-bodied on the palate, it marries a rare sense of elegance and finesse with incredible intensity. It’s impossible to resist today yet merits at least 5–7 years of bottle age, and I have no doubt this beauty will still be enjoyable at age 50. Bravo! (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Maya is fabulous. I can’t remember a young Maya with this much sheer immediacy and allure at this stage. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. Bright red/purplish fruit, spice, blood orange, mocha and mint are some of notes that open over time. There is plenty of tannin, but it is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. I would not be in any rush to open a bottle soon. In 2019, Maya is more finesse than power. (Antonio Galloni)

Dark fruits and a silky texture combine elegantly in this full-bodied but sleek wine. Ripe black cherries and plump blueberries are lightly accented by mint and cocoa as mild tannins keep it smooth through the finish. (Jim Gordon)

From the southern, cooler end of the valley, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville offers a vibrant, lively bouquet of blue fruits, sappy herbs, truffle, tobacco, and hints of gravelly earth. It brings plenty of richness on the palate and is medium to full-bodied, has nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful, cooler-climate, textured, balanced Cabernet that can be enjoyed today or cellared for upwards of two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2021 Chardonnay (Carneros) is soft, open-knit and very easy to like. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and white pepper lend vibrancy to this steely, finely-cut Chardonnay from Frank Family. All the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. (Antonio Galloni)

Frank Family’s 2021 Pinot Noir is a blend of several vineyards, built around the same primary sources as the Chardonnay and a short (nine-month) élevage in one-third new French oak. Nicely floral, with cinnamon accents to the cherry fruit, it’s medium-bodied, silky and pleasant, an easy-drinking, fun wine, for drinking young. (Joe Czerwinski)
