Kapcsandy Family Winery Estate Cuvee - Cabernet Sauvignon | State Lane Vineyard 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 53708

JD96+96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
Moving to the reds and a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot that was brought up in 55% new French oak, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée is deeply colored and has a Bordeaux-like bouquet of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and spring flowers that has both richness and complexity. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, it stays firmly in the elegant style of the vintage with plenty silky tannins, good acidity, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Estate Cuvée has turned out beautifully. Rich, smoky and inviting, the 2017 will, uncharacteristically, drink well pretty much upon release. In 2017, the Estate is a bit broader and richer than it usually is, but all of the elements are in the right place. To be sure, the natural richness of 2017 is evident, but at the same time Lou and Louis Kapcsándy have done a terrific job in avoiding the hard tannins that are found in so many wines. Tobacco, cedar, leather, smoke, licorice and incense add to a feeling of gravitas and pure power. This is an impressive showing.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 55% new French oak, 18% new Hungarian oak and 27% second fill French oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it strolls nonchalantly out of the glass with forward notes of baked black cherries, mulberries and warm cassis plus wafts of lilacs, cinnamon stick, cedar chest and clove oil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate rolls easily over the tongue with gregarious black and blue fruits plus a fragrant, floral edge and plush tannins, finishing with plenty of freshness and spicy kick. 250 cases were made.

Patria Avoyelles 2017 / 750 ml.

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 51257

VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Avoyelles is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich and explosive on the palate, the 2017 conveys tons of savory freshness and intensity. Lavender, sage, mint, black cherry and espresso all soar out of the glass. The 2017 is a wine of real character and personality; it is also absolutely gorgeous. Over the last year, the 2017 has really come together. What a wine!
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The 2017 Oakville Ranch Avoyelles is blended of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Medium garnet-purple colored, it comes prancing out of the glass with pretty baked plums, kirsch and blackcurrant cordial scents plus wafts of rose hip tea, forest floor and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with spicy black fruit preserves, framed by chewy tannins, finishing with an herbal lift.

From the folks at Odette and Plumpjack, this lovely red is juicy, broad and immensely likable, with soft layers of baking spice, black cherry and licorice. With 16% Merlot and smaller additions of Malbec and Petite Sirah, it delivers supple texture and length without fuss.

A well-made red blended with 14% Merlot as well as smaller amounts of Malbec and Petit Verdot, this crowd-pleaser is robust and leathery, with length and supple tannins. The oak is integrated and meshes well with the blackberry, cherry and currant, finishing in clove and toast.

Opus One 2017 / 750 ml.

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 60644

VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
A remarkable wine for the year, the 2017 Opus One is a dense, full-throttle beauty. Plush fruit and soft, silky contours give the 2017 its racy personality. Exotic, beautifully perfumed and impeccable in its balance, Opus One is one of the most complete wines of the vintage. In 2017, Opus One has a distinctly red-toned fruit profile that distinguishes it from the surrounding vintages.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, February 14, 2020
Lots of currant and floral notes on the nose. Hints of mint and spice. Medium-to full-bodied, round and savory with creamy, juicy tannins. Hints of citrus underneath. Bright, fresh and delicious. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Opus One had picked 91% of their fruit before the fires started in 2017, and only two lots were eliminated from consideration. The 2017 Opus One, bottled in July 2019, is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4.5% Merlot and 1% Malbec. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it slowly grows on the nose, revealing compelling notes of baked black cherries, mulberries, black raspberries, warm cassis and blackberry pie with nuances of spice cake, yeast extract, tapenade, licorice and dusty soil with a waft of wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate has a lively skip in its step, featuring bags of juicy raspberry and cassis-laced fruit and a refreshing line, supported by ripe, plush tannins, finishing long and graceful. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020
This features currant and plum fruit, with tobacco, loam and singed savory notes, maintaining range and driving through the finish. The structure is fine-grained, delivering a lingering hint of acidity. A more subtle expression of Cabernet. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Best from 2022 through 2036. 27,800 cases made. (James Molesworth)

JD98+98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is another Bordeaux look-alike (Latour?) with its density, structure, and regal style. It offers blackcurrant, graphite, crushed rock, and lead pencil shaving aromas and flavors and is full-bodied, supple, and seamless on the palate, with building yet perfectly polished tannins. Showing the polished, elegant style of the estate, flawless balance, and a great, great finish, it’s going to keep for 30–40 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
This is the first year that Cabernet Sauvignon makes up 100% of the Grand Vin State Lane. Aged in French oak, 90% new, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard slowly unfurls to reveal tantalizing notes of chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and crème de cassis with nuances of pencil lead, bouquet garni, tree bark and crushed rocks plus a waft of iron ore. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated yet with fantastic tension, the palate has a firm backbone of grainy tannins to support throughout the long, mineral-tinged finish. 500 cases were made.
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is, for the first time, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the more reticent wines in this range, the Grand Vin is also going to need a bit of time to shed some of its tannic heft. Cedar, leather and spice add gorgeous aromatic complexity. Rich, brooding and quite powerful, the 2017 offers a lot of potential but it is not especially forthcoming today; that should not be an issue in time. Clearly, the pure Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is a bit of a stylistic departure from the past. All the 2017 needs is patience.
