Notes of toasted spices, nut shell and bark with a deep dark berry backbone to it. Medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins, that are ripe and velvety. Structured and broad with a lingering dark-fruited finish. Try from 2025. (James Suckling)

Always impeccably made, the 2020 Le Lion De La Fleur De Boüard (which is the entry level wine) offers a beautifully pure perfume of red and blue fruits as well as leafy tobacco, leather, and chocolate. It’s balanced, medium-bodied, has ripe, silky tannins, and great finish. It’s well worth seeking out and a beautiful Right Bank that will keep for 7–8 years with no issues. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2021
Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Le Lion storms out of the glass with bold notes of baked black plums, blackberry pie and boysenberries, plus suggestions of dried Provence herbs, pencil shavings and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers taut, muscular black fruits with a firm frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

The 2020 Le Lion La Fleur de Boüard is a soft, easygoing wine to drink now and over the next few years. Dark cherry, dried herbs, mocha, dried herbs and crushed flowers open nicely in this attractive, soft Lalande-de-Pomerol. The 50% Cabernet Franc adds a light vegetal character that is not too intrusive but that is present. (Antonio Galloni)

Where It's From

Region / Bordeaux

View more wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The Grand Vin 2020 Château Cheval Blanc checks in as a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that was raised, as always, in 100% new French oak. As usual with Cheval Blanc, it’s primarily about finesse and elegance, as well as complexity, and exhibits a deep purple hue as well as a kaleidoscopic bouquet of sweet red and black fruits, spring flowers, spicy incense, loamy earth, and smoke tobacco. Absolutely flawless on the palate, it’s full-bodied, has perfectly integrated oak, ripe, silky tannins, and a gorgeous finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. This powerful, concentrated Cheval Blanc offers pleasure even today (needs lots of air) but warrants 7–8 years of bottle age and will see its 40th birthday in fine form. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2020 Cheval Blanc is eternal, seamless and exceptionally beautiful. All the elements are so well put together. Rose petal, blood orange, raspberry jam and cinnamon all take shape in the glass. Above all else, the 2020 Cheval Blanc is a wine of mind-blowing balance. Hints of mocha, raspberry jam, pomegranate and spice emerge with time in the glass. Cheval is quite simply one of the truly great wines of the vintage. (Antonio Galloni)

This wine has power and density. It also offers a perfumed intensity of black fruits and ripe tannins. The shape of the wine is already there even if it is still very young. Ripe and sweet, the fruit is delicious and open, bringing great freshness behind the structure. Drink this wine from 2027. (Roger Voss)

JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/29/2023
The 2020 Château La Fleur De Boüard showed beautifully, with the more elegant, finesse-driven style that this estate has been moving toward front and center. Ripe black cherries, mulberries, toasted spice, and beautifully integrated oak all emerge from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has fine tannins, a terrific sense of freshness and purity, and outstanding length. It will benefit from 3–4 years of bottle age (it’s far from unapproachable even today) and will drink fabulously well over the following decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Bright and fleshy red with notes of ripe dark berries, sweet spices, citrus peel, moist earth, toast and blue flowers. Medium- to full-bodied with attractive crunchiness and succulence, firm, juicy tannins and a deep dark-fruited character. Structured and long. Better from 2025. (James Suckling)

A beautiful red with black berries, black and green olives, and bitter chocolate. It’s full-bodied with polished tannins. Lots of depth and length. Savory at the end. It’s from dedicated plots of Pavie. Half merlot and half cabernet franc. Not just a second wine. Better after 2028. (James Suckling)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/29/2023
The second wine of Château Pavie, the 2020 Aromes De Pavie certainly has some Grand Vin character in its red and black fruits, tobacco, leafy herbs, and chocolate-driven aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and concentrated, with fine tannins and some obvious minerality on the finish, it’s up with the finest second wines in the vintage. It will keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th May 2021
Composed of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Arômes de Pavie has an alcohol of 14.78% and a pH of 3.57. It is aging in French oak barriques, 70% new. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a little swirling to unleash its exuberant scents of stewed black plums, black cherry compote and boysenberries, plus hints of tar, sautéed herbs and chargrill. The full-bodied palate packs in the black fruit layers, framed by soft tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

Clos L'Eglise Pomerol 2020 / 750 ml.

2020 / 750 ml.

JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/29/2023
A real “wow” wine, the 2020 Clos L’Eglise sports deep ruby hue as well as an absolutely stunning bouquet of black cherries, red plums, damp earth, chocolate, truffle, and lead pencil. This deep, full-bodied, concentrated, beauty has that classic Pomerol opulence and richness paired with an incredible sense of elegance. The tannins are perfectly ripe as well. Give bottles just 4–5 years, and it’s going to age beautifully. This is the finest wine I’ve tasted from the Garcin-Lévêque family, surpassing both the 2009 and 2016. Don’t miss it. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, May 14, 2023
This has a pretty nose of chocolate, praline, blueberries, lavender and bramble berries. It’s medium-bodied with firm, compact tannins. Firm and focused with an enticing bitter chocolate character throughout. Some smoked wood. Intense and tightly wound. Opens on the palate. Try in 2027. (James Suckling)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2020 Clos L’Eglise is not as showy as it was from barrel, perhaps because of its recent bottling. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and rose petal are all laced together. En primeur, Clos L’Eglise was quite powerful, but I see more finesse today. Even so, this is one of the most concentrated Clos L’Eglises ever, since surpassed by the 2022, though! (Antonio Galloni)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Apr 2023
Aromas of ripe plums and raspberries mingled with hints of rose petals and toasty new oak preface the 2020 Clos l’Eglise, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping wine with a broad attack that segues into a fleshy core of fruit, with powdery extract asserting itself on the youthfully chewy finish.
