Where It's From

Region / Valle Central

View more wines from Valle Central

Valle Central is Chile's most famous and most productive wine region. Located on the other side of the Andes from Argentina's Mendoza wine region, Valle Central is producing outstanding examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Chardonnay, and other grapes. Many of these wines are excellent values when compared to wines of similar quality from other parts of the world.

Country / Chile

View more wines from Chile

With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

A rich and deep expression of blackcurrants and blackberries with hints of red chili pepper, tobacco and cocoa powder, following through to a full body with powerful but fine, seamless tannins. A dash of petit verdot here. Compact and bright. Drink or hold.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvingon Cuvée Alexandre is also 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, all from Apalta, Colchagua, aged for up to 14 months in used barrels. Purple with a garnet sheen. The liqueur-like nose presents notes of sour cherry and black currant plus hints of pepper and mint. In the mouth, it delivers good structure with firm tannins, juicy acidity and intense flavor. This is a full-bodied wine that needs time in the bottle. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

This red plays to the savory side, though subtly, with eucalyptus and dried mint nuances to a berry and cassis core, which stretches out nicely midpalate around fresh acidity. Concludes with slightly chewy tannins. Drink now. 3,867 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon | Puente Alto Vineyard 2020 / 750 ml.

Puente Alto Vineyard
2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59179

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, December 13, 2022
Deep and serious with black olives, blackberries, blueberries, tobacco leaf, sweet red capsicum, ash, dried meat and a hint of black chocolate. This is a more direct, full-bodied Don Melchor, filled with solid blackberries and wrapped by tight, fine-grained tannins. Long and deep. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc, 1% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Better after 2024.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor has a 6% dash of Cabernet Franc along with 1% splashes of Merlot and Petit Verdot from Puente Alto, Maipo, and was aged for 15 months in 71% new French barrels. Vivid garnet red in the glass. The aromatic profile features red fruit such as cherry and black currant along with hints of mint, spice and pepper over secondary aromas from the aging process, including a gentle whiff of cedar. Intense in the mouth, with juicy freshness and young tannins that will integrate better in time. The fruit was especially vivid this year, adding greatly to the nuance and subtle details. This will growth deeper in the bottle. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023
Inviting aromas of chocolate-covered cherry, dried rose petal and petrichor set the stage for this well-structured red, which balances concentrated berry and mission fig flavors against vibrant acidity, lending a lush, mouthwatering quality to a finish that swirls with cassis, spices and fine tannins. Drink now through 2038. 14,600 cases made, 3,500 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
Dark berries with sweet-tobacco and flower-stem undertones. Full-bodied with a tight, juicy and rather tannic palate. Flavorful finish. Just a hint of chocolate and cedar at the end. A more muscular style of carmenere. Better in a year or two, but already excellent.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - May 2021
The 2019 Carménère Cromas Gran Reserva is the first vintage for this wine from Peralillo, Colchagua, which was 50% aged in French barrels. Intense purple in the glass. The wood floats over blackberry and raspberry aromas accompanied by roasted red pepper and fruit jam. Ample and creamy on the palate, it delivers a satisfying, flavorful flow with a big, sugary but not overly sweet finish. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2021
Vibrant acidity backs the concentrated dark fruit and Asian spice flavors in this red, with plenty of dark chocolate accents, followed by dried mint and forest floor notes on the finish. Drink now through 2024. 15,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (Kim Marcus)

A very subtle rosé here with just a hint of cream and white almond to the pomegranate and peach skins. Juicy and a little more citric on the palate with fresh acidity cutting through the round mouthfeel. Dry and more restrained and neutral. Direct pressing and skin contact for just two hours. 60% syrah, 30% grenache noir and 10% mourvedre. Drink now. Screw cap. (Zekun Shuai)
