Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 60257

SP95+95–98 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020
Youthfully balled up, but there’s a ton of gorgeous cassis, raspberry and plum fruit, all of it kept in check right now thanks to a bolt of iron as riveting as I’ve seen in this wine. Barrel samples are often easily impressive, but this is way more than that.—Non-blind Louis M. Martini vertical (July 2020). (James Molesworth)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023
Well-built, with a dense core of red and black currant reduction flavors held in check for now, while iron-tinged sweet tobacco, warm earth and singed apple wood notes hold sway. Packs a muscular, racy structure that drives underneath, so just give this a bit more time to fully meld. Rock-solid, though. Best from 2025 through 2040. 1,350 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, January 14, 2022
Aromas of currants, blackberries, vanilla, walnuts and cedar. It’s full-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Plush, supple and textured with a deep core of dark fruit and spice. Vanilla, too. Rich and flavorful. Big, chewy wine. Try from 2023. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Martini’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard has the site’s characteristic mint and herbal overtones, but it also offers deep cassis and plum notes. Full-bodied, ripe but firm, with typical Cabernet Sauvignon varietal austerity and reserve, framed by fine-grained, silky tannins that linger on the finish, it’s a classic example of Monte Rosso Cabernet. Cedar-soaked cherry, mushroom and peppercorn aromas show on the nose of this bottling. The palate is very savory, with dried meat and mushroom flavors. Slightly sour fruit and smoky leather elements arise on the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

Another St. Helena release, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Ceanda checks in as 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot and Merlot, all brought up in French oak. Black fruits, chocolaty herbs, graphite, violets, and acacia flower notes all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with a seamless, elegant texture, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. I’d be thrilled to drink a bottle any time over the coming 20 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon CEANDA is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it delivers expressive notions of blackberry pie, Black Forest cake and crème de cassis with hints of licorice, tar and Sichuan pepper plus a waft of wild sage. Full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid, rugged structure of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to support the black fruit preserves layers, finishing on a lingering aniseed note. I was blown away by the 2018 M by Michael Mondavi, an incredible wine based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. Deep, full-bodied, and opulent, yet with perfect balance and a seamless, layered mouthfeel, it has beautiful darker fruits, notes of leafy herbs and chocolate, perfectly integrated oak, and silky tannins. This majestic, flat-out awesome wine will evolve for 20+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Classy cabernet characters with red chili pepper, cassis and tobacco with some cocoa powder, incense and fine spices to the ripe plum and blackberries. Refined and precise, with a medium to full body teeming with blackberries. A natural, supple acidity is rounded by plenty of dusty tannins, Shows restraint and elegance in its long, subtle finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2018 M Red Wine is an excellent wine, with classic scents of ripe cherries, cedar and vanilla alongside faint sage-like herbal shadings. It’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and smooth, with a gentle sweep of softly dusty tannins across the finish. Nicely done. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
A ripe, polished style, with currant, plum and blackberry preserves lined with mocha-accented toast, sweet tobacco and melted licorice. Stays reserved in feel overall and relies a bit on the toast, but there’s ample fruit in reserve. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2034. 400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha’s was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 68% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it slips slowly out of the glass with captivating scents of black raspberries, Morello cherries, black currant pastilles and rose oil, followed by suggestions of cedar chest, pencil lead and black olives. The full-bodied palate is charged with amazing energy, featuring vivacious red and black berry layers and a firm backbone of grainy tannins, lifted by refreshing acidity and bags of crunchy fruit on the long finish. 617 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022
This has an old-school hint, showing warm earth and roasted cedar hints, with a mix of steeped plum and warmed cassis fruit flavors. There’s a strong tug of loam through the finish, giving this a youthfully grippy feel. Offers more heft than purity, but this is plenty solid. Best from 2023 through 2036. 615 cases made. The 2018 Sloan is a flat out stunner. Rich, dramatic and full-bodied, with striking energy, the 2018 is viscerally thrilling right out of the gate. Black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and gravel all build as this towering, statuesque Cabernet shows off its pedigree. The 2018 is simply magical, and just as breathtaking from bottle as it was as a barrel sample last year. It is the very finest Sloan I have ever tasted. I can’t wait to see how it ages. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/21/2021
I compared the 2018 Proprietary Red to a great vintage of Mouton Rothschild from barrel and I’m still happy with that comparison now from bottle. Sporting a dense purple hue as well as gorgeous aromatics of blackcurrants, chocolate, espresso, tobacco leaf, charcoal, and gravelly earth, this big, full-bodied, concentrated, tannic wine is flawlessly balanced, incredibly precise, and as pure and classy as they come. It needs to be forgotten for at least 5–7 years and will have 30–40 years of overall longevity. Bravo to the team at Sloan for another magical wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
A blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2018 Proprietary Red displays and deep, vibrant garnet-purple color. Baked plums, blackberry pie, crème de cassis and toasty oak notes leap from the glass, followed by hints of tilled soil, Indian spices, mocha and crushed rocks. Big, full-bodied, opulent and velvety, it has a solid structure and a very long, seductively spicy finish.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Gnarly Vine Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is opulently scented of baked raspberries, prunes and fruitcake with wafts of Chinese five spice, potpourri and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, a racy line of freshness lifts the bold, flamboyant spicy fruit preserves, finishing long and chewy. 1,580 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

Ripe, exotic aromas of crushed berries and orange peel. Full body. Dense center palate with a flavorful finish. A big, rich wine, yet fresh and intense at the finish. Old vines—some as old as 1888. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

If my math on the provided vineyard sourcing is correct, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is about two-thirds estate-grown and one-third purchased from other growers. Aged in 25% new French oak, it’s faintly herbal, with primary fruit notes of cassis and black cherries. It’s a medium to full-bodied effort, a little tannic and austere at this stage, with a dusty finish. For the suggested retail price, it’s a solid value in Napa. (Joe Czerwinski)
