When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

From the folks at Odette and Plumpjack, this lovely red is juicy, broad and immensely likable, with soft layers of baking spice, black cherry and licorice. With 16% Merlot and smaller additions of Malbec and Petite Sirah, it delivers supple texture and length without fuss.

Blended with 3% Malbec and 2% Petite Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon features cedar, warm blackcurrants, black cherry compote and blueberry pie with touches of dark chocolate, dried herbs, garrigue and lavender. The palate is full-bodied, firm and fine-grained with lovely freshness and a long finish.

Schrader MB Cabernet Sauvignon | To Kalon Vineyard 2017 / 750 ml.

To Kalon Vineyard
2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 52312

RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th Dec 2019
The very first vintage of this new Schrader label, this 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Monastery Block To Kalon Vineyard comes from clone 169 planted on the Monastery Block of the Robert Mondavi section of To Kalon vineyard in Oakville. One hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon, it was aged in 100% new oak for 20 months. Very deep purple-black colored, it bursts from the glass with a fruit explosion of blueberry compote, freshly crushed black plums, black cherry preserves and cassis, giving way to touches of red roses, cigar boxes, yeast extract and fallen leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a fantastic frame of bold freshness and very finely grained, firm tannins, impressively supporting the mouth-coating blue and black fruits, finishing very long and very perfumed. 365 cases were made.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, February 14, 2020
Fabulous aromas of crushed blackcurrants, licorice, tar and violet. Inkwell, too. Medium body and tight, linear tannins that are polished and chewy. Driven finish. Needs time to open. First vintage of this wine and from Constellation’s To Kalon holdings. Drink after 2022.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/31/2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Vineyard Monastery Block is always terrific, yet I always find it more linear and foursquare compared to some of the other releases in the lineup. Nevertheless, it offers a terrific bouquet of gravelly earth, ground herbs, chocolaty dark fruits, and some obvious minerality. This full-bodied Cabernet is going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and keep for 15–20 plus. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Verite La Joie 2017 / 750 ml.

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 55170

JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/21/2020
Tasting like a great bottle of Château Lafite, the 2017 La Joie is based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon and brought up, I suspect, in mostly new French oak. Deep ruby/purple, with a heavenly bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil, cedarwood, graphite, and tobacco, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, an incredible sense of elegance and purity, building tannins, and a great, great finish. This majestic, regal Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is going to require a decade of cellaring to hit maturity (although it’s far from unapproachable today) and will see its 50th birthday in fine form. I followed this bottle for three days and it never showed a hint of oxidation. This is easily my wine of the vintage in 2017. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th May 2020
A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2017 La Joie has a very deep garnet-purple color. It opens a little closed and broody, giving glimpses of blackcurrant cordial, espresso, charcoal and black truffles to begin, before blossoming out to a whole array of preserved black and blue fruits, dusty soil, crushed rocks and iron ore scents plus a waft of roses. The medium to full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, with firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone supporting the muscular fruit, finishing very long and mineral laced. The alcohol weighed in at just 13.9% this year (14% on the label), making for a particularly elegant but no less impactful La Joie! 2,500 cases were made.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
The 2017 La Joie is another gorgeous wine in this lineup. Deep, pliant and nuanced, the 2017 is impeccably balanced. Silky and plush, La Joie is especially refined in 2017, and that complements its mid-weight structure so nicely. Hints of rose petal, lavender, mint and blood orange add brightness. The 2017 is a stunning wine by any measure.

VN93+93+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate shows the racier, more voluptuous side of the vintage. A burst of super-ripe red cherry fruit, spice, mint, tobacco and cedar gives the wine an extra kick of exoticism that is a signature of the year, and a bit out of character for Montelena. Even so, the wine retains its super-classic sense of structure. Today, the 2017 is clearly still recovering from its recent bottling a few months ago, but it has so much to offer.

Roche Darjac Bordeaux

2015 / 750 ml.

Item #: 40111

RP8585 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Sep 2016
The 2015 Roche Darjac is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. It delivers a pleasant redcurrant and cranberry bouquet, what you might call a little “solid” but with plenty of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with powdered chocolate sprinkled over the black and red fruit, chunky and big-boned but packed with flavor on the finish. This is a decent, commercial Bordeaux wine at a bargain price, but give it a year in bottle if you can.

Earthy, slightly mushroomy aromas of pine needle and forest floor are layered across the black-raspberry fruit on the nose of this bottling. The palate is a bit more oaky, with cocoa, red cherry, licorice and a touch more pine.
