When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Direct, with black cherry and black currant paste flavors laced with tobacco, cedar and and warm earth streaks. The cedary note clings a bit on the finish, but there’s enough fruit for immediate appeal. Drink now through 2022. 5,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Reserved in style, with mint, tea and sandalwood aromas leading the way for a fine-grained core of damson plum and red currant coulis. A subtle savory edge winds through the finish, which lingers prettily. Drink now through 2034. 15,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Heitz’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is predominantly St. Helena fruit, but it includes grapes from other AVAs as well. With its cherry notes and some darker, more cassis-like nuances, hints of dried herbs and dusty earth, it’s pretty classic old-school Cabernet. Medium to full-bodied, it’s linear, silky and fine, avoiding any sense of jammy excess.

Dark leather, mocha and tart blackberry aromas show on the nose of this single-vineyard expression. The palate throws herbs, green peppercorns and coffee spice against a tart cranberry backdrop, and the wine grows much more integrated as it sits open for hours. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2017 Avoyelles is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich and explosive on the palate, the 2017 conveys tons of savory freshness and intensity. Lavender, sage, mint, black cherry and espresso all soar out of the glass. The 2017 is a wine of real character and personality; it is also absolutely gorgeous. Over the last year, the 2017 has really come together. What a wine!
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The 2017 Oakville Ranch Avoyelles is blended of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Medium garnet-purple colored, it comes prancing out of the glass with pretty baked plums, kirsch and blackcurrant cordial scents plus wafts of rose hip tea, forest floor and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with spicy black fruit preserves, framed by chewy tannins, finishing with an herbal lift.

WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
The Rockfall Vineyard is between 2,000 and 2,200-feet in elevation, and the wine that originates there is powerful and concentrated in style, with robust red-fruit and mineral tones. Herbal and classic, it shows elegance and integrated oak and tannin within its context of intensity and structure. Enjoy best from 2027–2037. (Virginie Boone)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
Red and blackcurrants, gravelly earth, tobacco, and assorted spice notes all emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Rockfall Vineyard, and this rich, powerful 2017 has medium to full body, rich, chewy, substantial tannins, good overall balance, and a great finish. It shows more purity and elegance with time in the glass, yet it’s still going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and should have an easy two decades of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Rockfall Vineyard captures so much of what makes the best wines in this vintage appealing. It is vibrant and savory, as all these wines are, but it also has terrific body and resonance to give a sense of measure. Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, menthol and licorice fill out the layers nicely as this ample Cabernet shows off its resonance. (Antonio Galloni)
