The 2014 Proprietary Red from Oakville is 44% Cabernet Franc, 44% Petit Verdot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a fabulous wine and a creative blend from Kenward. With a fabulous nose of forest floor, white flowers, licorice, incense, blackcurrant and blueberry fruit, this deep, sumptuous, full-bodied wine has fabulous intensity, low acidity and finely grained, integrated tannins. There is not much of it, but it is a beauty. It can be drunk now or cellared for another two decades.

From the Producer

Another first for Tor, but given how magnificent this turned out, hopefully not the last time we can make this wine. The combination of West Oakville Cabernet, West Oakville Cabernet Franc and Vine Hill Ranch Petit Verdot has produced a wine unlike any other wines we made in 2014. This wine has the sweet core mid-palate from the Cabernet, the earthy/leather profile from the Cabernet Franc and the intense spice and mineral profile from the Vine Hill Ranch Petit Verdot. Think of this wine as a Haut Brion meets Oakville in all the best possible ways.

Others that struck me as possibly as good as one could make included the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Melanson Vineyard and the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon BFD Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard.

Greg Melanson’s vineyard on Pritchard Hill is very steep, with rows running up and down the hill directly across from Colgin Winery. Beyond Colgin, its rocky face looks down at Napa Valley’s floor. The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Melanson Vineyard was on skins for only about 13 days and pulled off soon after and was aged in new Darnajou barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it features aromas of stewed plums, sautéed herbs, cassis, damp soil, cigar box and beef drippings. The palate is full-bodied, firm, chewy and earthy with a savory finish.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard comes from the lower hillsides of Howell Mountain. Tor Kenward uses the middle section of this vineyard that was earlier used by Ann Colgin for her Herb Lamb bottlings. This wine has always been noted by its blueberry component, touch of licorice and underbrush. This wine has all of that, medium to full body, beautiful acidity and loads of fruit. It is drinking well now and should continue to do so for 15–20 or more years.

Drive the Oakville Cross Road to the Silverado Trail, then look directly forward and up and you see Tierra Roja, a small four-acre jewel of a hillside vineyard. The vineyard is dotted with big rocks, and the soil is roja (very red). The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Hillside comes from the upper steep terraces of the vineyard, directly below Dalla Valle. It includes 5% Cabernet Franc from another of Oakville’s vineyards. Fermented in a single closed-top tank, this was allowed to stay on its skins for a little over 30 days. The wine continued to pick up sweetness and depth without adding on any drying tannin, so extended maceration was used. After fermentation this was lightly pressed to new Taransaud and Darnajou barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives profound crème de cassis, blueberry pie, mulberries, plums, chocolate box, menthol and licorice aromas with underbrush hints. The full-bodied palate is firm, vibrant and earthy with herbal accents, finishing long and earthy. 300 cases produced.

Tor’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Hillside Tierra Roja Vineyard includes a dollop of 5% Cabernet Franc from To Kalon. A powerful, structured wine, the Oakville Hillside is going to need at least a few years to allow the tannins to soften. This is an especially tannic, imposing 2015 Cabernet. The 2015 spent 18 months in French oak, about 70% of it new.

A touch rustic and chewy while still maintaining an elegant profile, marked by charcoal, lead pencil, dried berry, sage and cedary oak notes. Should gain. Best from 2020 through 2030. 300 cases made.
