Alain Jaume Ventoux Les Gelinottes 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 56719

JD89+89–91 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
From an appellation on the uptick, the 2019 Ventoux Les Gelinottes is another high-quality wine from this estate. Bright, medium-bodied aromas and flavors of black cherries and peppery, sappy herbs all emerge from this nicely textured, fresh, focused 2019 that has good concentration. The Ventoux is a cooler region, and this shows the wines more lively, fresh aromatics and focused texture. It will evolve for 5–7 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The Maraschino cherry and garrigue-scented 2019 Ventoux Les Gelinottes is a juicy, mouthwatering effort. It’s medium-bodied, silky and fresh, with hints of pine resin and tree bark on the largely savory finish. Drink it over the next few years.

Breezy, with light-bodied, dusty-edged cherry, red tea and sandalwood notes. Drink now. 325 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

France's picturesque Rhone Valley produces wines just as beautiful as its landscapes. Located in Southern France, the Rhone is divided into two distinct sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone. In the Northern Rhone, you'll find red wines produced predominantly with the Syrah grape, which oftentimes take a few years to mature before reaching their peak. Meanwhile, there are a wide array of red grapes used to produce wines in the Southern Rhone, including Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre (which together produce a blend known as GSM). The most famous red wine coming out of the Southern Rhone is the red blend, Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The lurid purple 2019 Gigondas Terrasses de Montmirail boasts impressive raspberry aromas, plus hints of dark chocolate, Provençal herbs and espresso. A Grenache-based blend with small amounts of Mourvèdre and Syrah, it’s full-bodied but vibrant, with supple tannins and an almost creamy mouthfeel, but also bright acids that keep the wine fresh on the finish. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD91+91–93+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Based on 65% Grenache and the rest Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2019 Gigondas Terrasse De Montmirail is deeper purple hue and offers more smoky black and blue fruits, roasted garrigue, licorice, and ground pepper. Made in a more focused, masculine style, with notable minerality, it’s medium-bodied, has a solid mid-palate, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from a year or three of bottle age but is unquestionably going to be an outstanding wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Cut from the same cloth as the 2020, the 2019 Gigondas Terrasse De Montmirail is a charming, medium-bodied, workhorse-styled effort that will drink nicely for a decade. Lots of ripe red and black fruits, spice, and peppery garrigue dominate the bouquet, and it has a kiss of oak (I think it’s partially aged in barrel) that gives it a pure, slightly modern style. Drink it over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Moving to the reds, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône is a smoking good effort offering loads of character in its red and black fruits as well as peppery herbs and leathery aromas and flavors. Liquid Provence in a bottle, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a ripe, rounded mouthfeel, and outstanding length. I’d buy it. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Also pure Southern Rhône goodness, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes has classy notes of red and blue fruits, candied orange, flowers, peppery garrigue, and loads of Asian spices. Beautifully textured, silky, and elegant on the palate, it has wonderful tannins, a notable sense of freshness, and a great, great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Ripe and expressive, with a lovely display of warmed plum, raspberry and blackberry puree flavors infused with red tea and anise notes. Features a solid mineral note that chimes on the finish, while a roasted apple wood frame keeps it all in line as the fruit takes an encore. Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. Best from 2023 through 2036. 650 cases made, 200 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
