Domaine Cabirau Serge & Nicolas Maury Sec 2012 / 750 ml.

Item#: 37535

RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2014
Moving to the Serge & Nicolas cuvee, this cuvee is mostly Grenache (from 60-year-old vines and brought up all in tank), with smaller components of Syrah and Carignan (which are brought up in 500-liter demi-muids). Looking first at the 2012 Maury Sec Serge & Nicolas, it exhibits an inky purple color to go with decadently styled notes of cassis, black raspberry, spice box, licorice and ground herbs. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a fabulous texture, it should have 5–7 years of longevity.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Bright ruby. Displays vibrant, sharply focused raspberry, cherry, potpourri and baking spice aromas, with hints of cola and succulent herbs. Shows fine delineation and spicy lift to its bitter cherry and red berry flavors, which become sweeter as the wine opens up. Echoes the floral and spice notes on a long, penetrating finish that’s framed by subtle, fine-grained tannins. (Josh Raynolds)

As to the 2020s from bottle, these are all beautiful wines as well. The 2020 Gigondas Tradition Le Grand Montmirail has a round, supple, quintessential Gigondas style as well as notes of red and black fruits, Provençal garrigue, sandalwood, and leather. Medium-bodied, soft, and ready to go, it’s going to evolve nicely for 7–8 years, probably longer, although I see no need to delay gratification. The blend is 70% Grenache and 10% each of Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, aged 60% in vats and 40% in used demi-muids. As with all the wines here, it was completely destemmed. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Domaine de Piaugier Gigondas

Long, velvety and intense, the 2017 Gigondas looks to be a worthy successor to fine bottlings in 2015 and 2016. Raspberry and garrigue notes feature prominently in this full-bodied, supple wine that should drink well soon after release.
JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - September 26, 2018
What looks to be an outstanding effort, the 2017 Gigondas gives up lots of spice, dried flowers, and cedary notes as well as a core of sweet red fruits, medium to full body, considerable elegance, and no hard edges. In short, it’s a charming, forward, sexy Gigondas that’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Viña Zorzal Malayeto

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 40236

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
The really impressive and mineral 2018 Malayeto was produced with Garnacha from a single vineyard that produces wine of unusual elegance and minerality. This was the first plot they bottled separately, and this 2018 is the sixth vintage they have produced. It’s a 2.9-hectare plot planted 40 years ago, on the same slope as Corral de los Altos but at a higher altitude and therefore with different soils, surprisingly deep but with lots of calcium carbonate and fine gravel. This fermented in a combination of stainless steel and concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured in a 4,000-liter oak foudre and nine used 500-liter oak barrels for nine months. This wine clearly transcends its price. It’s serious but started quite shy and needed time to open up (it’s extremely young and just bottled), but there is great purity and detail, and it’s elegant and balanced, extremely harmonious. The palate is incredibly elegant, seamless, balanced, with very fine tannins, great integration of the oak and very good freshness, with citrus-like freshness (think blood orange skin). Most of the time, this is my go-to wine in Zorzal’s portfolio, a wine of great finesse in its finest vintage to date. 11,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2020.

Brightness and invigoration from tart skins and crunchy seeds render the fresh blackberry and black raspberry delivered by the Cabirau 2011 Cotes du Roussillon proof against any negative effects of its nearly 15% alcohol. Tar, Latakia tobacco and black pepper incisively accent this smoky, rich blend of Grenache with roughly 20% Syrah and 15% Carignan, leading to an infectiously juicy and positively mouth-shaking finish. Here is a wonderful example of the vivacity and energy that can be conveyed by ripe Roussillon fruit, not mention an exceptional value. I expect it to drink well through at least 2017

Hints of earthy spice and bark add interest to the somewhat muted blackberry and black plum aromas. The wine opens up more on the palate, revealing a lush and creamy texture, with dense blackberry flavors and a sweet oak and vanilla spice that lingers through the finish. (Lauren Buzzeo)
